TopicThe dangers of saying "I'm sorry" at work...

Unfortunately corporate is right on this one.

Kneejerk admitting fault doesn't diffuse Karens, it emboldens them. And even outside of Karen's, you have to defend your position or lose it. Apologising too often has the unintended consequences of giving up bargaining ground where you otherwise might have actually had a case.

Does that mean never admitting fault? No. But it does mean being solutions orientated.

Took me a while to figure out that low level employees tend to be too quick to apologise and the higher ups rarely ever apologise, but are better at figuring out an actual resolution.

How I deal with this is something like this -

Don't say: "I apologise for the inconvenience"
Do say: "were working on a fix as soon as possible."

I'm not going to sit on these issues and just hope that a movement that is not for me or by me is going to take care of these things when it clearly has no interest, motivation or plan to take care of these things. I want to do something, not simply be a silent ally and clap along.

And that's ok, that's not an attack on feminism at all. i just don't understand the argument that a movement with an expressly different purpose is what I should rely on here. So much feminist discourse is stuff that I can't meaningfully contribute or participate in, so that's not where I'm going to look when I have a problem.

I'll give my "things that bother me most about being a man" (oh my, spicy post)

  1. the collective presumption that you are ok and you don't need or want help, and the corresponding lack of support network. I first noticed this in my first office job and realised that our CEO would give the women in our office mental health breaks over the most minor of things and for anything comparably stressful for the men he would just look down on them for not being tough enough
  2. Related: my knee jerk impulse in most situations to not seek out help or go to the doctor and repress my own feelings at my own cost
  3. Wearing an emotions mask at nearly all times. I am expected to be manly and stoic when convenient or angry and possessive when desired, my emotions are expected to exist for the benefit of others. True expression of (at times) ugly feelings has often left me in a worse position in relationships when these emotions are undesirable
  4. The curious middle ground in relationship dynamics where you're still expected by many to hold onto toxic notions of chivalry in certain scenarios (hold the door open, pay for the meal, be the strking meat shield) and at the same time always be super conscious and proactive about consent and personal agency in every regard, and you're just sort of expected to read the room to tell the difference.
  5. The way that talking about any of these things inevitably gets understood as an attack on women (#notallwomen) and that it is important to make sure everyone understands this is all exclusively the fault of men, therefore any concerns summarily dismissed and handwaved. I am very tired of being "mansplained" about how men's feelings and experiences work by women who fundamentally are barely one hair shy of being outright misandrists.
  6. The condescending and even schitzophrenic position that such people have about the way to address this problem: it is not the role or priority of feminism to address any of these things but simultaneously feminism is the only thing that can address any of these things

People say a lot of shit but the answer is rarely an absolute thing in cooking. You just have different results based on what you're doing and what you want.

With a regular burger (not a smashed burger), you don't want or need to squeeze the burger down too much and actively push all the juices out. You DO want to make sure that the burger has solid contact with the pan, so putting your spatula on it so or weighing it down with weights is no big deal.

Smashed burgers are a way of getting more crispy browned bits, the trade off is some juicyness inevitably lost, which is why they're quite often made up of fatty mince. Whether you care about that on a burger is your choice.

They come in three accent varieties
1) american actor doing what is probably passable if you're not scottish (willie, simpsons)
2) scottish actor but they've been in america too long (gerard butler)
3) actual scottish person but they have that peculiar edinburgh/fife theatre kid voice that only people in scottish tourism adverts have (Rowena MacLeod, supernatural)

This is such a niche complaint that maybe only 3 people will understand what i mean, but maybe it's the same for other nationalities too.

Having something, either cops or cameras, or road design enforcing driving and traffic seems like a good thing. Gotta pick one.

I pick option 3. It's very hard to take the arguments about road safety seriously in the UK when we have such a ridiculous pothole problem that the main thing I'm scared about on any given journey isn't wreckless drivers but instead having my axel fly off because the road maintenance is that terrible.

If they want to protect people on these roads, they should maybe make the roads safe to drive on in the first instance.

I'm not exaggerating. On my daily work commute there are at least 5 potholes that could cause a serious accident.

I'm primarily talking about non highway roads that have pedestrians around them.

Highway speeding is an issue as well of course.

1,2,4, and 5. If the data shows it's increasing pedestrian safety, I can't really say I care what the intention is. So yes, obviously they should be put in high risk areas with poorly designed roads and high risk of pedestrian danger, but I'm pretty much for more traffic cameras.

My personal beef with speed cameras is the A68. This is a straight single lane road up the centre of the UK, from newcastle all the way to edinburgh. It's basically only one of two routes north. It is largely just a single lane road surrounded by empty fields.

And there's cameras....ALL the way up it. Like every 10 miles. But only once you get to scotland. Somehow I guess the road gets more dangerous once you cross the border because it goes from zero cameras to many, many cameras.

The most maddening thing about this is that they made sure to put the cameras on the only good passing spots the entire way. Any idea how infuriating it is to get stuck behind a truck and two caravans doing 45mph when the road is 60, and you have 100 miles to cover, and you can't risk overtaking because the cameras have you covered. Yeah, that's actually really fucking annoying.

If y'all are talking about american highways with 17 lanes of drunk drivers doing 120 then I don't have have a bone to pick there.

3. More so than having regular cops perform this type of traffic enforcement for 24/7?

Better yet, let's not have cops enforce speeds at all

Why? Hopefully you can answer this, because nobody else has, so far.

1. I don't think the intention is always purely about safety and is easily corrupted, so it's essentially a government sanctioned grift
2. They're quite often poorly thought out in placement
3. Extremely expensive to maintain
4. Something just extremely annoying about thr human condition where an open stretch of road with nothing around it for miles needs to be council regulated to that degree
5. Now I'm in the UK all the cameras are clearly marked with high vis paint so that you're clearly informed and incentivised to slow down, so they say. When I was in Australia they hid them as deceptively as possible with the justification that you shouldn't be speeding anywhere. So...which is it? Aren't these things about safety?

Case in point, my weekly commute has had what, 6 or so speed cameras on it for the past decade or more, and they're now taking them all (all!) Down because they've done research on this road and discovered it is extremely low risk. So...why were they there all this time
