I didn't mind her, up until the point where I sat through all the Peace Walker audio tapes (yes, that's on me), and Kojima claimed every achievement of Gargarin and Shepard for his ridiculous OC.

Now, she just pisses me off.

It's ok to claim ridiculous feats for your OC, it's not ok to diminish those who strapped themselves to unproven tech, at great personal risk, to explore the unknown.

Republicans are too feckless to make him Julius. Plus, Julius didn't have bone spurs.

I agree, it's a terrible insult to Julius Caesar. A man who slept on campaign on the bare ground, wrapped only in his cloak. His hardiness, an inspiration to his troops.

None of this in anyway reflects Cadet Bonespurs of course.

The thinking is more towards Julius as Dictator. His flirtations with the trappings of the deposed Kings, and the limits of his term as dictator.

Everything resonates, challenging his term limits, Xcrement posts where he has a crown, it is all the same.

You might not recognise it, but I do, and so do Steve Bannon and Steven Miller.

I recognise it because I love history, they emulate it because they love that history.

Once Europe and the Near East was a patchwork of city states, each with varying degrees of representation, and a constitutional crisis all their own.

Then Rome came, all fell under it's sway, until the great men owned so much, they bought the state itself.

You're at this point, and your Julius constantly seeks to see if you'll let him have his crown.

I suspect he'll fail, but an Augustus will crown himself without you realising it, just as Octavion did.

I mean it's the single biggest block to seeding life. Things only get more difficult when you start talking about trying to send people to those planets. By restricting this exercise to unmanned craft and something like bacterial endospores, assuming unlimited resources making this strictly an engineering problem, the water is your stopping point.

Sure, but assuming you solved all that engineering shit (a lot of assuming).

All of that tech has heat as a by product of work done, and assuming you landed on an ice cap (be an idiot not to), you will be producing a great deal of waste heat from your day to day operations (aka your reactor, and all of your machines) to produce water from that cap.

No doubt many many difficult hoops to navigate, but water supply isn't necessarily one of them.

The problem is that it's all frozen. That's not helpful.

Potentially fine as a base resource.

Fine, as in barely an inconvenience, compared to all the other issues involved in such an endeavour anyway.

But I think it's also relevant to point out that not only do we not currently intentionally do this, we make significant efforts to not do it. probes, landers, etc undergo pretty serious decontamination procedures to try and prevent accidentally bringing microbes and spores and stuff to other planets

That's all very important.

Imagine getting all excited about your new life find on a previously thought sterile planet, only to find it came from a sweaty mechanic for your own craft!

Yes, yes, we've done that already.

A whole bunch of microbes might be what you need to get a breathable (by our standards) atmosphere.

If eating out is a treat, rather than regular, just accept the extra salt/fat/whatever content as something to pay off.

Most professional chefs do add more salt than necessary (salt is tasty, plus if you get used to the flavour, it's natural to add even more).

As long as the restaurant isn't your primary food source, and you eat healthily at home, it shouldn't be too big an issue.

Reasoning being, assuming FTL impossible as far as we know, such an endeavour would require a project of millennial proportions.

Prospective system scouted by probes : insert time frame of centuries here.

This time frame is longer than our civilisations usually manage (quite outside the many many technical challenges), in an age where the political news cycle changes on the hour.

Alternatively, fairness, justice, equality etc, are entirely human constructs, and do not exist in nature.

This doesn't make such concepts lesser, quite the reverse, they are ours. We created them, we aspire to them, and with effort, we can possess them.

I think this is a really strong point to Islam. Everything was written down while Muhammad was alive and there's not multiple accounts of the same event and so on. It's very concise.

*I'm not talking about the merits of the religion in terms of what it teaches or if it's true, just that the organization and veracity of its primary text is far superior.

Just no.

Much like Christianity, once a great political power had hold of it, a great deal of editing ensued.

It's a common myth, I blame Gibbons personally, that Islam sits on firmer ground than other religions.

It doesn't really. Just like the others, only edited texts centuries after the fact exist, molded to fit the needs of ruling powers.

Not that the German theologians are allowed to look at ancient Korans these days, caused too much trouble (no, I don't know why it's always German theologians, apparently those lads are super keen on kicking away the flimsy scaffolding of belief, it's their thing ok?)

Letting proper scholars at your holy book is generally a bad idea, ask Christians, or indeed the Jews (I believe it was a Jew in Cordoba, who first proved that Moses could not possibly have written Genesis. Kicking in your own holy book, is of course, all in good fun.)
