It was never about actually getting the guy who did 9/11, we just tried to hide behind the doctrine of empire lite instead of being honest with the citizens.

What's this revisionist bullshit?

America didn't care that a couple of planes were flown into the Twin Towers resulting in the deaths of thousands of people? Nobody really wanted to avenge that, they just wanted to prove theirs was bigger than the other party's? Get the fuck out of here with that noise.

Of course there were war profiteers who never cared, but avenging 9/11 was absolutely the motivation behind the majority of people who enlisted and the majority who supported the war.

I would absolutely like to wipe out the Taliban, and anyone else who sells children into sexual slavery, but that isn't a realistic option unless you can surround them on all sides and whittle them away to nothing. For that, we would absolutely need to start World War III. Other nations in that region might not like the Taliban, but I'm sure a great many people with power in that region would see it as a welcome alternative to Western Imperialism.

You have two options.

1. Let the Taliban take over
2. Straight up annex the country

There's no third option. Which of those do you think is preferable?

In the grand scheme of things, it's probably better than we leave rather than establish America Jr. in the Middle East. That's sticking their fingers too deep into someone else's pie.

The best option would've been, what I felt at the time we should have done, to have negotiated the release of American POWs within 24 hours of Osama Bin Laden getting killed. The Taliban would've been as happy to have seen us leave then as they are now. The difference is that it would've been under our terms, it would have come a lot sooner, and we would have had a victory.

"We got the guy responsible for 9/11. Let's go home."

Trump signed the withdrawal. Biden is merely honoring it -- and probably has no choice in the matter.

The biggest incentive to leave is that we get our POWs back. If Biden had said, "No, no, we're staying until the job is finished," he'd have been an even bigger heel because he'd be directly denying captured soldiers release.

As many as it takes to survive. If I have to feel sick once a day every sick months, it's better than being dead. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the danger is real.

I've had COVID once before. Even if I could be assured to once again come out of it alive and with use of all extremities, I still wouldn't want to go through it again. It's not the most discomfort I've had, but it is the single most lingering sickness I've ever experienced. And, to be honest, I think I got one of the weaker strains.

It was a lot better / less bad than I thought it would be.

Overall, the kills felt pretty tame. It's almost like they made a PG-13 remake, then went back in post-production and added a bunch of nudity and swearing. There are many two kills that warrant an R-rating.

It feels very in-keeping with the original series. Like, I could easily see this film as a sequel taking place after Part III or Part VI. It's also peppered with mythology nods -- chief among them Jason's transition from covering his face with a bag to adopting his trademark hockey mask.

Even so, there's something about it that doesn't quite work and I can't quite put my finger on what. It's a Friday the 13th movie updated for the 2000s. The characters act like Friday the 13th characters. The scenarios are par the course. I want to say that it feels phoned in, but that wouldn't be accurate either. Whoever made this clearly enjoyed those movies.

It's still better than Part V of the original series.

The out-of-context opening scene would make no sense to anyone who hasn't seen the first two movies in the original series. Also, everything looks too glossy, too clean. The gritty realistic look was part of the presentation. It made it seem like this could happen to anyone. Watching this, I feel like I don't have to worry since I'm not a cast member on a CW show.

We're off to a good start.

It's gonna have to work really, really hard if it wants to be anywhere near as bad as the Nightmare on Elm Street remake though.

Friday the 13th (NES)

  • If technical limitations would have allowed, I would have placed notes in the small cabins explaining vital information to complete the game. "Press start to switch counselors," and "Hold and press or to dodge." Pressing start only works if you're in a small cabin, but you'd already be in one to read the note.
  • If they couldn't explain in-game how to dodge, then they needed to simplify the face to face "Punch Out" sections by locking the player into a stationary position, for which left or right would dodge automatically, or make moving to the right and left dodge animations which can avoid blows. (Though that might make the game too easy.)
  • I would have made Jason a little less ridiculous to beat -- especially on the third day. I also would've had him unmasked on the third day if technology permitted.
  • 100% of the way though, I would have changed Mark's name to Tommy to tie in to Friday the 13th: Part VI upon which the film is based. I also would've changed Laura's name to Ginny from Part II. There's a Chrissy in the game. I would've left her unchanged only now she'd be the protagonist of Part III instead of the name being a happy coincidence. I'd have the instruction manual explain that Tommy, Ginny, and Chrissy are returning counselors accompanied by three new friends. (The only reason I wouldn't rename the other counselors is because no one in the series up until that point fit the profile of Paul.)

I think they wanted to remove the rock and its racist history was just an excuse.

Think of if they'd simply removed the rock. We'd have people complaining about its historic significance and how the school are evil bastards for moving it. But they find an article in a newspaper where someone gave it a racist nickname and they suddenly have all the ammo they need to remove it without backlash -- and maybe with a little bit of positive PR.

Nobody is going to spend $50 dollars to remove a rock because a newspaper editor made a racist joke. Let's be real.

America lost the war and that's a sting to our pride, but we're out of danger. The Taliban won't be stupid enough to attack us again knowing they suffer years of war and territorial losses as a result.

Also, don't forget that America's army was:
A) fighting two simultaneous wars in two different countries
B) comprised entirely of volunteer entries

If the Taliban attacked us again, we would have every right to draft as many eligible people as we needed to crush them. And it would be one on one this time. (No sending troops to Iraq.) I think even the majority of antiwar individuals would realize that, if the Taliban attacks us again, they won't let up until we're under Sharia Law.

And that is exactly why the Taliban won't attack us again. It's better to be feared and revered in their surrounding areas as the country that defeated America than it is invite their demise with another attack.

Permanent occupation was a futile wish. America will never have a foothold in the Middle East. The entire region fears what would happen if Israel's buddy suddenly sprouted a colony. We tried to train Afghani troops to succeed us and, time and again, they turned their guns on the US troopers resulting in hundreds of deaths. They don't speak for everyone, but I'm sure the Taliban is more welcome than a US presence. "They may be assholes, but they're our assholes. And they don't let women drive or vote."

We should've killed Bin Laden, demanded our POWs back, and walked away then.
