Best: Milky Way Wishes (Very strong mix of all of the other modes. Doesn't go as hard as GCO or RoMK in either direction, but as a final exam with a strong payoff of 'play with any ability as much as you'd like', it's fantastic)

Worst: Gourmet Race (A solved equation with a LOT of leeway, unlike Samurai Kirby or Megaton Punch where you can at least screw up. Lacks the pure fun to speedrun that Spring Breeze has, too. And anyone dunking on Arena is crazy, so much fun doing solo ability runs in it.)

1. Without looking at a picture of Kirby for reference, how accurately do you think you could draw him? - I mean, I remember the instructions Kirby's Adventure gave me. The arms will probably look weird, but I think I can draw Kirby about as well as Kirby can draw Kirby.

2. What's your favourite Kirby game? - It's still Super Star. KSS was the first game my child brain went "this is the greatest video game ever" toward, and every game that's come out since has to be compared to its holy altar. Plus I just think it's an absolutely perfect co-op game, including with those totally new to gaming. Pound for pound, I think Robobot's a better single-player experience, but KSS strikes the right balance of being easy without being trivial that RtDL and KSA don't quite hit.

3. Do you have any Kirby (or other video game character) plush toys in your home? - Several! But for Kirby specifically I have him, Dedede, Marx, and Susie.

4. When I was in High School, I had a teacher and her name was Miss Kirby... - If only we could all be so lucky.

Best: Suplex (grapple abilities are by far the most fun ability to do solo game/arena runs with)
Worst: Light (Sleep is at least used in a bunch of puzzles as an obstacle really well. Light is legitimately worthless)

Q1. Have you played many of the 36 Kirby games?

All mainline and all of the spin-offs released before Return To Dreamland! Didn't go back for the spin-offs that were just expanded sub-games from the Kumazaki games.

Q2. Do you like to play as Kirby in Smash Bros.?

Not really, he's really slow in Smash and they take away a lot of his fun and quick movement options to balance him, plus he's remarkably stubby compared to the rest of the cast.

Q3. Does this topic make you think of ertyu? Do you miss him?

I have many other things to associate with Kirby than ertyu. I like those better.

Q4. Which Kirby game would you recommend to someone who has never played one?

Super Star if you have a friend to play with co-op. With Switch Online, that's a lot easier than it was before. Planet Robobot if you're only interested in the single-player experience. Kirby 64 if you want something you can 100% in a day and just feel kinda cozy while playing.

Q5. Kirby's first game was on the Gameboy! Did you play that?

Yup!

I love the energy this game has. Everyone has absolutely gross options, but has to extend to get them, giving this crazy rushdown focus and making combos feel a lot more natural than they are in Smash. It really hits the speed and feel of "any hit can end in death" that Melee had, but requiring execution or your opponent falling for your set-up to do so (taking people up off the top with CatDog ladders into Feline Fist feels so much faster than Mario ladders).

It's really scratching an itch for me that Smash has grown to be too defensive to satisfy while remaining pretty accessible. I've missed the sense of faster games with more stocks.

Performance definitely suffers online for certain stages, though. Rooftop definitely has some lag to it that the other neutral stages don't, and some like the Hey Arnold stage feel like a slideshow at times.

My favorite detail is how they change the ending of DKC2 with him. When K Rool is retreating after destroying his ancestral home, in the SNES version he just sails into the sunset, laughing, leaving the screen with a poignant sunset. In The GBA remake, however, Funky Kong appears, saying "I don't think so, dude!" and carpet bombs K Rool, ending the game with a war crime and setting up DKC3 where K Rool is supposedly deposed.

Good guy, all in all. Fun to speedrun with in Tropical Freeze, too.

What FFVI fails to do at keeping consistently interesting characters (I think Terra and Edgar especially fall off a cliff of 'interesting' after their backstory's done being explored), it makes up for in how strong the game is thematically. The idea of politics and alliances and grand, epic, swashbuckling adventure dying because the world is crap and one selfish clown just wants to see it burn, and the entirety of World of Ruin being the monumental task of proving him wrong. Kefka is a brilliant villain that every single member of the party opposes ideologically (even Gogo from the simple perspective of "wow your story sounds cool, seems better than being in a worm, let's go" ) which makes every action in World of Ruin feel like a fight against him. Adding in the optional backstory with characters like Shadow that Chrono Trigger would eventually go nuts with, and it's a tremendously ambitious package that actively works best as a video game beyond any other medium the story could've been told in. Plus I'm a sucker for all the literary analogues that Cyan gets thrown into.

Does have some pacing issues, though. Game takes its sweet time setting itself up and doesn't really hit any sort of momentum until Doma gets poisoned, though a lot of that is the mindlessness of the early game combat being at odds with the story being told. Really, it's more gameplay limitations holding back the story at times than anything the plot itself does wrong. And yeah, Terra's less than the sum of her parts.

Wasn't high on her before MK11, definitely not after. Rousey's, erm, "inspired" voice acting makes her fun to listen to in the same way a middle school play is high art, but the character also decided to stop being interesting or be fun to fight.

I think Super Smash Bros Brawl is the game responsible for some level of self-actualization in me. Like I have vivid memories of playing it five days after release, being on Target Test Stage 5 with Mr. Game & Watch, and going "... am I still having fun?" And then I went back to play Melee that same day and had much more fun.

But for big-name releases, Warcraft III Reforged actually destroying my ability to play a game I loved in the ways that allowed me to love it was pretty big. I'll also second Indivisible, RE3 Remake, and FFXIII.
