https://soranews24.com/2021/12/18/how-is-playing-games-going-to-help-you-in-the-future-japanese-gamer-has-perfect-comeback/

The video game industry is bigger than its ever been, and many of the worlds most successful hardware and software developers are Japanese companies. Even still, not everyone in Japan is a gamer, and especially from older people its not all that uncommon to hear derogatory remarks about the hobby.

The go-to criticism is that playing games is a waste of time, and that said time would be better spent on more productive endeavors. Its an unsolicited piece of advice that Japanese Twitter user Prime (@SF4prime) has gotten tired of hearing over the years, but the upside of having heard it so much is that hes developed a pretty airtight comeback, which he shared in a recent tweet.

When older people ask me Whats the point of playing games? How is that going to be useful for you in the future? I ask them right back When you eat good food, are you eating it because you thinking itll be useful for you in the future?

Then they say No, but when I eat good food, its an enjoyable experience. It makes me happy and refreshes my motivation to work hard again tomorrow.

And then I tell them Thats why I play games.

Its a very rational rebuttal, and it highlights an unusual aspect of the criticisms that usually get lobbed at playing games as a hobby. While there certainly are hobbies where something is produced as an end result, such as cooking or painting, there are just as many leisure activities that are non-productive in nature, whether its fine dining, watching sports on TV, or listening to music. No one ever says What was the point of eating that deluxe sushi set? or How is listening to that song going to help your future?, so its kind of odd to start requiring any greater justification for playing games beyond I think its fun and I had free time. Granted, you could say that spending all your free time playing games doesnt make for a well-rounded lifestyle, but that holds true regardless of what the hobby in question is.

With 84,000-plus likes, Primes tweet looks to be an eloquent way of conceptualizing what many other gamers feel, and he invites like-minded fans of electronic entertainment to check out his gaming YouTube channel. And while not everyone approves of the hobby, at least video game culture got an extra boost in respectability at the Tokyo Olympics.

Right, because teaching the new generation that they should instead put themselves into massive debt just as their ready to enter the real world and maybe not even get a "skilled" job and will have to work an "unskilled job" in the meantime is a much better system!

People just want to survive. It costs more to live. wages should reflect that. its not that simple. fuck off with this whole "omg the next generation!" bull shit, you know you don't care. you're just conditioned to care by the people you vote for because it benefits them far more than it would you. Also, a retail worker isn't asking to be paid what an accountant or doctor is, genius.
Why can't the government subsidize medical schooling? We're going to need a boatload of doctors, nurses, and specialists to deal with the damage caused by COVID and other maladies.

https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/i-team/ohio-spent-56k-and-counting-to-keep-covid-deaths-in-nursing-homes-hidden-from-public

CINCINNATI The Ohio Department of Health has spent more than $56,000 on legal bills to fight WCPO to keep the number of nursing home COVID deaths at each facility hidden from the public.

WCPO obtained the states legal invoices this week through a public records request. They show the state, through the Ohio Attorney Generals office, is spending $200 per hour on attorney Dale Cook of the Columbus law firm Isaac Wiles to fight WCPOs request for public information on COVID death numbers at Cincinnati-area nursing homes.

These are the peoples records. They are not ODHs records. They belong to every citizen in the state of Ohio, said WCPO attorney Darren Ford.

WCPO filed a complaint against the Ohio Department of Health in August 2020 for that public information and won in the Court of Common Claims.

Attorneys for Ohios health department tried to argue that death information is private under state law. Special Master Jeff Clark disagreed, noting that the information is already available on death certificates, which are public records. He ruled that officials violated the states public records law when they refused to release to WCPO the number of COVID-19 deaths at a Cincinnati nursing home. A judge later adopted that ruling.

But the health department appealed its loss to the 10th District Court of Appeals. The appeals court heard arguments in mid-November in WCPOs case and four other similar cases that all involve the states refusal to release COVID death information.

With all the misinformation out there nowadays, isnt that what we want people to do instead of making up numbers or getting it from really unreliable places? Just to ask the state how many people have died of COVID in the state of Ohio last year, said Attorney Matt Miller-Novak, who represents a Columbus woman in her quest for basic COVID death information.

https://thehill.com/policy/technology/583479-scientists-say-xenobots-worlds-first-living-robots-can-reproduce

Scientists who created xenobots, the world's first living robots, say the life forms are "the first-ever, self-replicating living robots."

The tiny organisms were originally unveiled in 2020. The robots were assembled from heart and skin stem cells belonging to the African clawed frog. They can move independently for about a week before running out of energy, are self-healing and break down naturally.

The scientists from the University of Vermont, Tufts University and Harvard University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering published research on Monday saying they discovered a new type of biological reproduction different from any other known plant or animal species, according to a press release published by the Wyss Institute.

"People have thought for quite a long time that weve worked out all the ways that life can reproduce or replicate. But this is something thats never been observed before," said Douglas Blackiston, Ph.D., a senior scientist at Tufts University and the Wyss Institute who worked on the study.

The scientists say that the new research could be beneficial in terms of uses in the medical field.

If we knew how to tell collections of cells to do what we wanted them to do, ultimately, thats regenerative medicinethats the solution to traumatic injury, birth defects, cancer, and aging, Michael Levin, Ph.D., a co-leader of the research, added. All of these different problems are here because we dont know how to predict and control what groups of cells are going to build. Xenobots are a new platform for teaching us.

As a nurse, Im incredibly thankful a layperson posted their experience and hope that it changes some minds. I think being 100% upfront and honest about what happens to you in a hospital is necessary. I did not know how uncomfortable and invasive many things we do are until I started nursing school.

Id like to add, wiping your bottom is not humiliating for me; Ive wiped so many Ive lost count, but it will probably be humiliating for you. So will a Foley catheter, should the time come for that. If this is a deterrent or the impetus for someone to get the vaccine, heres what happens:

If youre a woman, theyll likely be no less than two people there; if youre obese, there will be more- one holding your panus back, one on each leg and one holding a flashlight, spreading your labia and assessing your genitals extremely close to make sure they hit the small hole (urethra) and not the vagina. You likely have not showered recently. If your anatomy is like most women, this placement may require several attempts by several different nurses before it is placed correctly.

Its a little easier for males, but if youre obese, chances are someone will have to hold your panus back and youre getting something the roughly the diameter of a fast food straw inserted into your urethra.

Again, Im nothing but professional and my main job is to ensure we place the catheter in a sterile manner so you dont get a raging UTI, but its typically not so comfortable and pretty awful for the patient. After its placed, patients state they feel bladder urgency (i.e. the urge to pee) constantly.

While Foleys are not used for convenience, if youre so out of breath and desating into the 70s-80s just from the exertion of using a urinal/bedpan, it may be placed.
If you get COVID and have to be sent to the hospital, you will likely have to get used to having a catheter inserted in your bladder. Can you imagine having to endure that while struggling to breathe as COVID attacks the lungs and everything else?
