Are you going to stand there and tell me you didn't name your dick?

I have literally never named my dick.

Even after reading The Illuminatus Trilogy, where one of the characters talks about how every guy has a nickname for his dick, and I was like "Wait, what? Is that actually a thing?", I never named my dick. It always just sort of seemed a bit creepy/weird to me, and kind of pointless. If I want to refer to my dick, I just call it my dick.

I've also never named any car I've ever owned, in spite of the fact that some people do that as well.

I do name all my computers, though. In spite of that being more of an old hacker sort of thing, that most people today have kind of forgotten about. Even when the computer in question isn't on a network so names aren't necessary to differentiate it. For example, one of my old computers was Caliban, another was Ariel, and my first laptop was Durandal.

I doubt it. I don't know how much WB spent on advertising, but it felt like it dried up pretty quickly after release.

The usual rule of thumb is that marketing costs are about the same as production costs.

So if a movie cost $190 million to make (which this film did), it needs to earn back about $380 million to break even (which this movie very much did not).

It didn't even make back its production cost in box office returns, which makes it a full-on bomb. Yes, there are mitigating factors (ie, the pandemic limiting theatrical release, and simultaneous streaming diverting potential audience to alternative platforms), but by old standards this film was a catastrophic failure. It could be redeemed if WarnerMedia has hard data to imply that it helped spur a strong rush of new subscriptions to HBO Max, or if it does phenomenally well via DVD sales or On Demand rentals, but odds are this is going down in the books as an unmitigated failure.

The thing is though, failure doesn't actually mean they won't invest in another sequel. The Matrix franchise is a proven IP that has succeeded in the past, and there will always be interest in finding new ways to exploit it as long as Warner holds the rights to it. If anything, we're likely to just get a new soft reboot or other sequel without the Wachowskis involved at all, as Warner will just blame them (and the pandemic) for this failure. And then we'll get a "safer" sequel with more audience pandering.

KodyKeir posted...
I have to wonder if any of the executives actually watched (read: understood) the movie, as one of the meta subplots was on the making of the film series as a whole

They wouldn't even remotely care how much the movie craps on them or outright implies the movie shouldn't have been made in the first place and was only happening because soulless corporate execs wanted to churn out another installment to make money. The only think that actually matters is whether or not the film does make money.

Neither, I don't like meaty pasta.

For that matter, I might even throw out the pasta sauce as well. I've got issues with tomatoes so I tend to minimize my intake. Usually if I'm eating pasta there's a good chance I'll eat it with some sort of cream or butter sauce (butter and onion salt on egg noodles is an old favorite). Or something like mac and cheese.

ParanoidObsessive

I don't know if I would call Gabriel Knight a Mac game...

That being said, I'd love a sequel. But those games always had a serious case of identity confusion (with every title looking totally different and playing somewhat different from the others), so I'm not sure how you could ever do a sequel that would really work well (and not fall into the same sort of trap as King's Quest or Alone in the Dark did). Still slacker bookstore owners turned supernatural monster hunter and his cute Asian sidekick researcher girl has tons of potential for interesting stories if done right.

As for Ace Harding/Deja Vu, that was probably my least favorite of the MacVenture games. Shadowgate was easily my favorite by far, with Uninvited being a strong second. I'd love to see a Shadowgate sequel... except for the fact that we already got one, and it was total shit. And another, which was also kind of shit.

A lot of older games like that feel like they can't really be done properly these days, and remakes/reboots will only invite negative comparisons that ruin the franchise. If anything, maybe we'd be better off with more spiritual successors than outright continuations of old IP.

None of the above - I couldn't care less about any of those games. I'll likely never play any of them, ever.

Only game I can think of looking forward to at the moment is Horizon: Forbidden West. I honestly loved the first game, so if the sequel manages to be as good it'll be nice. Though these days liking a previous game doesn't make me enthusiastic about the next one as much as it just kind of gives me the sinking feeling of dread over how they'll find a way to put out a terrible follow up and utterly ruin the entire franchise. I've been burned waaay too many times over the last decade or two by soulless companies seemingly going out of their way to destroy literally everything I've ever loved.

I've kind of reached the point where I avoid looking forward to games at all because of it. Not helped by the fact that the last two games I was honestly excited about turning out to be catastrophic clusterfuck buckets of hot liquid feces. Pre-release hype can pretty much go fuck a cactus at this point - the only sane mindset at this point is to ignore games completely until months after they're first released, at which point solid reviews will be in and multiple patches will theoretically be released to make games playable in the first place. At this point I almost can't justify buying any game less than six months after release. Not helped by the ridiculous state of next-gen consoles (I probably won't own a PS5 until 2027 at the earliest, so I certainly won't be buying any games for it).

About the only other game on the horizon (no pun intended) I'm even paying attention to is the new Saints Row soft reboot - and that mostly because I expect it to be laughably bad and another case where a franchise I once loved has been turned into a franchise I loathe. Though I'm open to be proved wrong - hopefully it can manage to get everything right and be a worthwhile game on its own terms. I just have very little expectation that it's going to turn out that way.

They've been around in Europe for years (and Germany specifically for longer), but they're only just sort of establishing themselves in the US over the last decade or so, and they still do things the way they've always done, which isn't necessarily the way that US stores would do things.

Where do you think you got that aspirations from? I feel like that would be more satisfying but that isn't my perception of the world, I'm not sure why I'm this way but it seems objectively worse.

Where does anyone get anything from? We're all shaped by thousands of minor variables and influences we may never consciously recognize, molding us into the people we eventually become.

Even worse, there've been studies to suggest that the main core of our personalities are formed before we even turn 5 years old. So most of the things that make us who we are happen before we have any real power to influence them or make our own choices, and become extremely difficult to even remember by the time we actually become old enough to be introspective about things.

For whatever reason, I've always been very laid back about the future. I don't really obsess over what is yet to come nor do I get overly emotionally hung up on what's already been. I tend to live in the moment rather than plan out elaborate assumptions about where I'll be in 5 years or what I want to grow up to be, and I've always kind of been that way.

My motivations have always mostly just been wanting to have a job that I don't hate, that allows me to keep a roof over my head (and a place to keep my stuff), keep food in my belly, and generally experience interesting and stimulating things. So I mostly just try to make sure that I enjoy each day as it comes, and do my best to avoid regretting the things I've done and choices I've made.

I feel like "winning" is basically just being able to look back on your life from your death bed, and being able to honestly say that you've had more good days than bad. Anything more than that is a bonus.

Fortunately, things have always worked out pretty well for me, and I'm fairly happy with the life I've led. There's certainly regrets here and there, though nothing too severe, and not so much that I'd necessarily ever want to go back and change things.

2016 was the year of the monkey, and Harambe was shot

2022 is the year of the tiger, and Eko was shot

Now I can't wait to see what happens next Year of the Dragon.

You don't.

The more you try to push, the more likely the relationship they choose to end is your friendship.

Honestly, to be honest is honestly one of my verbal crutches.

I kind of (over)use it in the same way I use actually, basically, generally, essentially, effectively, or technically (and don't lie, at least some of you have noticed this in my posts) - as qualifying modifiers that are kind of (sort of, for the most part, more or less, etc) meant to soften the absolute definiteness of a statement.

It's a way of emphasizing the subjectiveness of statements or allowing for a margin of error. But it's also a way of breaking up phrasing and sort of shaping the flow of a sentence (not entirely unlike how people use "umm" or "like" when talking, and pausing to let their brain catch up to their mouth).

It can also become a really hard habit to break even if you're aware of it, once you start leaning into the crutch.
