Sen. Bernie Sanders wrote a letter to the Berkshire Hathaway CEO, requesting that he intervene in a United Steelworkers union strike at the Special Metals plant in Huntington, West Virginia. They've been on strike for three months. Special Metals is a unit of Precision Castparts, which is owned by Buffett's Berkshire. "At a time when this company and Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) are both doing very well, there is no reason why workers employed by you should be worrying about whether they will be able to feed their children or have health care," Sanders wrote. "There is no reason why the standard of living of these hard working Americans should decline. I know that you and Berkshire Hathaway can do better than that," His letter said employees were offered a contract with no pay raise the first year, only a $2,000 signing bonus, and then pay increases of 1% the second year and 2% a year the following three years. It said the company wants to raise the cost of health coverage for workers from $275 a month to $1,000. And it reduced vacation time they have already accrued. Sanders called the offer "outrageous and insulting." But Buffett responded with a letter quoting Berkshire's annual financial filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which tells investors that the management of its different companies is left up to the executives at each subsidy -- not Berkshire itself (or Buffett). "Our companies deal individually with their own labor and personnel decisions (except for the selection of the CEO)," he said in his response to Sanders, which was released by Sanders' office. "I'm passing along your letter to the CEO of Precision Castparts, but making no recommendations to him as to any action. He is responsible for his business." Unlike many other of the nation's richest people, Buffett has positioned himself as someone concerned workers and income inequality. He has called for higher taxes on the rich and pledged to give away most of his fortune, which now stands at just over $100 billion according to a real time billionaire tracker by Forbes. It tops the most recent reported high by at least 20 lives and is "not the direction we want to go," Hochul said. Hospitalizations are escalating exponentially, too, rounding out at about 6,767 total statewide as of Wednesday, Hochul said. That's a 10% increase over Tuesday's admissions and perilously close to the 2021 highs around 8,700 from January. More than 960 patients are in ICUs, with another 17 added to Wednesday's count. For now, most hospitals are able to manage the increases, given omicron's tendency to cause milder infections among the fully vaccinated. Betty Yu tweeted I was doing an interview outside the Metreon in SF tonight. I heard a man heckling us, before he swung at my photog. He knocked the camera to the ground. Were okay, but rattled. SFPD came and arrested the man for felony vandalism and misdemeanor battery. Yu was interviewing a family at a shopping center on Christmas when Green started verbally harassing them. The husband of the woman Betty was interviewing happened to be recording the interview on his smartphone. Whats equally as disturbing is the amount of harassment Betty Yu and many other Asian-Americans have been facing by members of the African-American community. Apparently, all attacks against Asian-Americans in the United States are staged and video evidence means nothing. Many members of the African-American community see themselves as the victims of Asian-Americans who are staging attacks, so they can show their anti-Blackness with impunity. Published in The Appeals newsletter this week, the report slams Hargitay for being selected as one of Glamours 2021 Women of the Year, and call the decision unfortunate because she and everyone else involved with SVU are complicit in what is likely the single worst piece of pro-police propaganda produced over the last few decades. The publication also accuses SVU of laundering the reputation of the NYPD and its sex crimes division. On SVU, the longest-running primetime live-action show in US television history, Hargitay plays Captain Olivia Benson, the commanding officer of the New York Police Departments Special Victims Unit. Inspired by her work as Benson, Hargitay started the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004 to help end the backlog of rape kits, which refers to the hundreds of thousands of collected rape kits across the country that sit untested in police departments, supposedly because they lack the funding to test them. As a solution, Hargitays foundation calls for more funding for police to end this backlog. Notably, experts as well as The Appeals reporting have emphasized that the backlog exists not because of lack of funding, but because police departments which receive substantially more funding than public resources for abuse victims choose to not send rape kits to labs. Its not a coincidence that the most frequently invoked defense of police is the supposed safety and justice they provide to victims or potential victims of sexual violence. Some critics of SVU note that shows like Hargitays play a significant role in mythologizing police departments as advocates for survivors when, in real life, its quite common for the opposite to be true. One survey of 20 anti-violence organizations and rape crisis programs that have worked with over 5,000 sexual assault survivors in New York City, where SVU is fictionally based, found the majority of these groups said the NYPD is failing to meet the needs of survivors. The Appeal notes local police departments are routinely sued or criticized for failing to investigate rape cases and retraumatizing survivors. A study from 1992 found that 40% of police officers are domestic abusers. And while just five out of 1,000 rapists will ever be incarcerated, 90% of incarcerated women most of whom are women of color are survivors of sexual violence. These realities, none of which are depicted on SVU, make it relatively clear why most victims of sexual assault dont report their experience to the police. One sexual assault survivor told The Appeal that the NYPD detective assigned to her case had assault allegations waged against him and even claimed that the NYPD gaslit her into believing she hadnt been assaulted. The survivor went on to say: If I had a dollar for every time I heard, This cant be true. Olivia Benson would never let this happen! I would have enough to cover my hospital bills and therapy for my trauma. De Blasio, in his waning days in office, made the announcement during his third COVID briefing in three days as he seeks to boost protection for the one-time pandemic epicenter, which is now in the throes of another intense viral wave. The Democrat warned New Yorkers that his health team expects the current surge to intensify in short order -- contributing to an unprecedented increase in viral spread -- but this latest wave is only expected to last a few weeks. Here's hoping. The city's rolling case weekly average is up nearly 123% over the averages for the prior four weeks, Tuesday's data shows. Hospitalizations are up 12% by the same parameters, but the vast majority of those cases are people who aren't vaccinated. "Everyone who has not been vaccinated, it's time. People in line said they paid $100 for the promise of a PCR test appointment with a result that BioReference claims on its site would come back in under an hour. Instead, several people told WNYC/Gothamist they were forced to wait for up to three hours ahead of their scheduled time slots, as about half a dozen NFL employees were seen marching to the front of the line. Kathy Hochul said she was unaware of the specifics around the site but said it was inappropriate for anyone to skip the line. I am no longer verified and I am shadow-banned, while dozens of fake Kendra Sunderland accounts pop up every day pretending to be me, not only ruining how I make a living but ripping off my fans monetarily and emotionally. Example: I had a fan come to one of my feature dance performances. Upon meeting me at my meet-and-greet, he started going on and on about our supposed relationship, how close we have become, and how glad he was that I was feeling better. Apparently, this poor guy was corresponding with a person pretending to be me on an intimate level, sent this fake a lot of money, and even had a wellness check done when the fake Kendra disappeared. This hurts my heart so much. I think its part of the reason why Im not doing any kind of tours at the moment. Ive been shadow-banned a lot. Users will type in my username in search and it doesnt come up right away because there are so many imposters. Its actually an easy fix: You could just have to verify who you are, but Instagram doesnt care to make that fix. It would deter people from making fake accounts, but they would also lose views. So, they dont do anything about the crazy amount of fraud going on. I understand that I made a mistake, but I havent bilked countless lonely men out of thousand and thousands of dollars. Another time I got deleted for reposting a Playboy post while their post remained up. They bring in views for IG and they are powerful. It sucks its not our platform but their platform. It sucks to have your account deleted and see other people get away with it. But you have to protect yourself. You have to deal with whatever Instagram puts you through. Playboy gets away with the most. Everyone knows theyre somehow allowed to post photos of women wearing see-through clothes over a naked body or a little blurring of private parts and not be censored. Im not bashing Playboy. I love them. But I wont repost their images anytime soon because a porn star cant get away with what they do. Once I was deleted for what they called harassment with no explanation (I still have no idea what that was about). The next time I was taken down for promoting scenes that had implied nudityno more than you would see on any Kardashian, Cardi B, or Madonna account. Recently, Nicki Minaj posted a photo to Instagram of her entirely nudesave a hand covering her nipplestraddling a giant teddy bear. Its still up. On top of the hypocrisy, you cant plead your case either. There is nobody you can talk to. No troubleshooter for any issue. So, you just have to accept it and keep making new accounts and backup accounts. It isnt fair. Instagram is how adult stars and sex workers make a living and branding. Jobs turn you down if they feel your numbers are low, and hackers out there know this all too well. There is a whole business of hacking the accounts of sex workers, then turning around and offering them back for five to ten grand. Its extortion and its illegaland its sad that so many women who are desperate to get their accounts back will pay up. The old record for most reported cases in a single day was 19,942, when reported hospitalizations were on the brink of 9,000. Now, the number of people admitted is down by more than half. New York reported close to the same number of tests taken last Friday, but of that batch (over 260,000), there were 10,000 less positive cases one week ago. Also, when you compare hospitalizations to one week ago, the number of people in hospitals for COVID-19 has risen by about 300, reflecting an increase of 8%. And in New York City, where testing lines have wrapped around blocks and people report wait times well over an hour, 10,286 positive cases were reported Friday. That total is up 20% from the previous day, and 100% from two days earlier. It's also the highest reported testing day for the city since the beginning of the pandemic, and the first time the city saw more than 10,000 cases in a single day. In an effort to combat rising cases of either variant, the state is rushing to acquire millions of at-home tests for New Yorkers living in communities with lower vaccine rates.
