I wonder if there's some context to that UN dude's statement that is being lost, because indeed, you can't just throw a few billions at world hunger to make it go away. Hunger is an infrastructure problem. We make more than enough food to feed everyone, but the transportation, storage, and distribution channels necessary to feed people with it don't exist. There are frequently physical and political barriers to creating that infrastructure as well.

https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-does-not-process-information-and-it-is-not-a-computer

A very interesting article.

Tl;Dr
  • There's a long history of the brain being compared to the latest in technology to represent its functioning
  • Brain = Computer is the most recent of these
  • But the brain behaves fundamentally differently from any and all computer hardware. Information is not really 'stored' in places in the brain, there's no true distinction between short-term and long-term memory, and different people change from the same stimuli in radically different ways.
  • The metaphor of the brain being an information processor is sticky. That is, experts in the field can acknowledge that the metaphor is flawed, but often have difficulty explaining functions of the brain to laymen without drawing on computer metaphors and computational lingo. This is indicative of how deeply the understanding of the brain as a computer is currently embedded in society.

I mean cheesy as in the performances. All the girls are incredible ditzes and are leaving their doors open, the one girl strips almost butt naked for a moment just because she spilled some butter, everyone's gotta bust their boobs out, and the way Michael zombie strangles people is funny

One of the kills is Michael stabbing a dude through the heart with a knife and then that guy is suspended feet off the floor with just the knife holding him.

Then Michael managed to suspend that guy upstairs such that his body would swing outward like on a pendulum when the closet is opened.

I didn't realize the main character was supposed to be a teenager until several minutes in because she has the voice and build of a 30 year old smoker. The way all the 'high school' chicks were so old felt like a parody but it was played serious. The psychiatrist made a big deal about Michael being the most evil soulless monster imaginable but he was actually a somewhat average serial killer.

80/80

So last night I replaced Windows 10 on my Dell Latitude 5289 with Ubuntu with KDE desktop envrionment.

There's a lot I like about Linux so far. The 'app store' and the functionality of the konsole are really cool. KDE is a very customizable interface that lets you retain that familiarity of Windows.

Funnily enough, my track pad actually feels a lot nicer to use on Linux. Not sure what's that about but it seems possible that this laptop's track pad simply is more responsive with linux drivers than with Windows ones.

One thing that's a downgrade so far though, is the touch-sensitive screen on my laptop. On windows, I could use it to scroll through word documents or web pages very naturally, or you two fingers to zoom in or out of a page. On Linux however, it just warps the mouse cursor to where I touch on the screen, and there's no multi-finger functionality.

Is there anyway I can look for drivers or what have you to try and improve the touch screen for linux?

The konsole is really cool. "Sudo apt install xxx" and it just FINDS that shit from the interwebs and it tweaks it for your computer

Some of these functionalities make windows seem so limited.

Nice, any tips on how to get better for somenone who picked up chess later in life? I was around 800 beginning of year and got up to 1200, my aim is to get up to 1300 by end of the year. It really feels like I hit a wall though, Im not even sure how to distinguish what my style is. If I get too aggressive I lose more matches but its fun, I have more success playing slow and just solid positional moves but thats boring.
Pattern recognition and error checking can be a big deal at that level. When you're new, games are much more likely to be decided by mistakes than by continuous successes.

Then it can come down to seeing where you continue to struggle. There's certain rule-of-thumb strategies and general knowledge that applies to end games that could be helpful to study if you find yourself losing at the end while up on material. Or if you're getting lost in the midgame, perhaps study tactics like pins, forks, discoveries, etc to help you capitalize on your opponents misplays (because again, at that level you will gain more ground from spotting that your opponent has erred than by just trying to be perfect). Don't get too obsessed with openings because the game is not decided in the opening at that level.

I once had a brilliant move by accident and still lost because I didnt know I had a follow up. Whats your rating TC and time constraints do you play?
As a child i played in some tournaments and got up to 1400-1500. Similarly my peak rating online is somewhere between 1500-1600.

However, while I used to be a very slow and positional player (eg I played 1 c4), I've become much more aggressive and get fickle with boards that don't lend themselves to romantic sacrifices, so my rating's dipped from its peak due to how much I experiment or do risky plays.

So people on the chess.com boards say that a 'brilliant' move is one that is better than the engine's recommended 'best' move because it results in a better outcome that the engine couldn't anticipate due to how far it's set to look at future moves.

DarkRoast posted...
It's checkmate in one move unless he's willing to sacrifice his queen
It's a bit more complicated because he can play Qf6. Then the engine considers the best response from white to be Bxf4, after which black has to play extremely carefully just to not lose immediately.

It's very rare to ever get a single brilliancy in a game if you're an average player. Not sure how they rate it though. I've definitely had moves that *I* felt were pretty brilliant but the computer wasn't impressed lol

I got to case 4 of the fan translation when I stopped. Figured I'll play through the whole game again and taste the professional localization.

Case 1 is for the most part really good in how it builds up Ryunosuke. Especially the moment when even Kazuma thinks all is lost, but Ryu has finally got his legs and pushes forward himself.
