It's actually kind of inconsistent. If you angle your car right and gain enough momentum, you can actually miss one of the boosts altogether and beat him. I've even fallen in the water and still won.

This was overshooting one of the ramps toward the end of the track and falling in the water to which I could hit the A button and recapture my momentum and easily climb back out again. If you fall off the log bridge into the water, you're far past gone.

I agree that he's harder in the first race. That legitimately took me an hour to beat. I have no idea what made them make it so difficult. The game was already long enough that no kid was going to beat it as a rental. The Silver Coin challenge saw to that.

I faced him for the first time in 1998.

That was my New Year's Resolution and I was not long in keeping it. When I look back at the decades that went by without having beaten him, I feel the pain all over again. Time and again, I'd beat a game that had kicked my butt only to remind myself that Wizpig was still out there unbeaten.

And after twenty years, the game had one last kick to the testicles left in it. The game ends on a screen which reads To Be Continued... The final image is of Wizpig laughing at you from his ship because he hasn't been driven from the island after all.

Whatever. I still won.

Pitfall Harry (Pitfall)

Pitfall was the highest selling game on the Atari 2600. Pitfall 2, despite being considered by many to be better than the original, came out during the gaming crash of the mid 80s. Super Pitfall on the NES killed the series. There were revivals, but this guy truly missed out on getting in on the ground level. He could have been up there with Mario and Mega Man as one of the true icons of gaming.

Billy and Jimmy Lee (Double Dragon)

The second-most famous brothers of the NES era, the Lee twins appeared in three games, a crossover with Battletoads, and even played Volley Ball. In the arcade, they also had a cameo in the WWF wrestling game made by Technos. Unfortunately, the series died a slow death by way of outsourcing. Double Dragon III was abysmal and later entries were super inconsistent with the IP. They were the second video game franchise to receive a live action movie and the first from a third-party developer. But even as it happened, their empire was crumbling.

Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark)

Lost the James Bond license? Get Jane Bond instead. No sharing royalties. That money's all yours. Rare went to X-Box, the revival game came and went with barely a whisper, and Joanna has been mostly silent ever since. She could have gone toe to toe with Lara Croft and Samus Aran had Rare played the cards right.

Alright, I beat it! After 25 years, I finally beat this game on one continue.

Also, in those two and a half decades, I had no idea there was a hidden cut scene. If you let the catch screen loop three times, it will go to an image where the protagonist's right eye is a wolf eye and his left eye is a human eye. I'd seen that image before but I always assumed it was from the arcade. I wonder why they would hide it like that. That's the kind of thing that would get a player pumped.

I know there was an early comic tradition of making heroes primary colors and villains secondary colors, but they got a little carried away on the green. Props on not making Venom green.

To get to the next screen, you break boxes. If you break the boxes, it hurts you. The entire game is like one of those levels where the character is holding their breath underwater and trying not to drown. It makes it needlessly tense on top of being baseline difficult.

The game had to be difficult to mask how short it was, but I feel like they could have chosen a better option than conservation of an ever-draining life bar. Playing Comix Zone is the video game equivalent to being in a lengthy car ride, needing a bathroom break, and knowing you'll have to hold it until the next rest stop 40 miles up the road.
