My understanding of critical race theory is that it says America has a system of white supremacy and white privilege, that this is the main reason for continued unequal racial outcomes, that just changing to colorblind laws and policies has not been and is not enough to remedy this, and critical race theory examines how this all plays out.

Basically no schools are actually teaching Critical Race Theory but there are indeed "all kinds of social/cultural movements that they're opposed to that come out of certain sectors of the contemporary intelligentsia. Cancel culture, wokism, anti-racism, etc" that seem to share Critical Race Theory's basic worldview that many find objectionable and some of these are indeed starting to spread into schools here and there?

So regardless of Republican cleverness or perfidy in branding stuff as "Critical Race Theory", all the objections about "CRT isn't actually being taught" seem...rather hollow? "Critical race theory isn't being taught anywhere, you shouldn't worry about it, it's just stuff by a bunch of fellow travellers that basically share the same worldview." Oh.

The battle against Mother Brain in Super Metroid is a perfect example of a great story moment in a video game, because every aspect of the gameplay, the visuals, and the music come together to help the player experience what Samus feels - and it conveys a wide range of emotions from shock to helplessness to fury through those things. It's both more impressive and more effective than if it had tried to sell those feelings through narration, which is why Other M's rendition of the fight (or my description of it) is so limp in comparison.

This is all pretty much correct and does add to the game (whereas more text-heavy storytelling probably wouldn't do much for it) but "story moment" is the thing. Outside the beginning, end, and the boss fights and some of the buildup to them, there's very little else. Nothing I've played that takes this route is able to supply the quality and quantity of content to amount to much of a substantial story. And if someone's asking to be recommended a game with a great story, I really hope you're not gonna suggest Super Metroid or Shadow of the Colossus.

I've thought it over though, and...yeah, I'd still take Shadow of the Colossus and its artsy-fartsy pretentiousness over an overly generic, average story with average execution..

Im not a fan of policing scores, because then you get inflated junk both ways. People can like or dislike whatever they want for any reason. Entertainment is purely subjective.

I dont like Shadow of the Colossus. You can guarantee I score the game a 1 when we get to it. Throwing scores out because of arbitrary this guy doesnt agree with the hive so he must be lying is just not a good idea.

I wouldnt say its impossible for minimalism to tell a great story in games but Ive never seen it - and maybe not even a good story. Not here, not in Ico, not in Journey, not in Super Metroid, and not in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I love the latter two and I like SotC but no.

FF1 does not actually have much historical impact imo. It was important for Square at the time as a revenue source when finances were shaky but not important at all for consumers or the industry. The most influential, best-selling, and highest quality games in its series owe very little to it. Most of what it's got going for it there is just being the first game to have "Final Fantasy" in its title. It's closer to being a Street Fighter 1 than a Mario 1 or Zelda 1.

Major "what the hell did I just play" vibes and the thing as a whole doesn't quite feel "good" but it's got neat ideas and themes and I respect the ambition. Would take this over an overly bland game.

It is just a bad game

Based on the first two games, this seems to possibly be the series' MO. Bait people in with the scifi stuff and the promise of the title "Star Ocean" conveying epic, possibly intergalactic scope; then stick you on a generic fantasy planet with anime tropes for like half the game at least.

At least in their original versions, Phantasia and Destiny are definitely worse than Star Ocean 2.

Possible marketing reasons aside, I feel there are very clear quality reasons those two got remakes while Namco thought Eternia was still good enough in 2006 to be a normal PSP game (though admittedly Sony of America seemed not to agree!).

I dont care about Gilgamesh and Ex-death so while it does get the job done theres basically nothing I particularly like here other than some amusing GBA dialogue.

Its not really that well-written of a story but the strong pacing that keeps the melodrama moving no matter how ridiculous things get keeps it entertaining. The earnest attempt shines through some of the stupid whereas FFV was just not full-assed.

It still isn't. Over time we've accumulated more and more total gaming history so as the timespan labelled "retro" gets larger, it makes sense that the "not retro yet" timespan gets larger too. And connecting to other mediums more generally, while they're certainly not new or recent or anything I wouldn't think of early 2000s movies as meaningfully "retro." Much less those from 2007/2008 as notable PS2 development was wrapping up.

And as gaming developed further, big leaps and changes got harder to come by. The shift to 3D was such a clear departure that it was pretty easy around the 6th gen or so to just assign everything older than PS1/Saturn to retro and 5th gen 3D games are generally distinct, creaky, and weird enough that it made sense to eventually let them slide in too (plus while they weren't generally as popular we were still getting a decent amount of 2D games with actual effort and budget from notable developers back then). What's the case for 6th gen looking or playing so differently than modern games? They're less detailed but as far as I can see they're generally not meaningfully different outside online features and all those remasters of gen 6 games we've gotten basically prove it whereas for gen 5 they basically have to redo the game from the ground up. Gen 6 games are just older and less technologically advanced. Going back from current games to God of War, Resident Evil 4, and Persona 4 is just fundamentally not like going back around 2001 to playing NES-era Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, and Dragon Warrior.

I think the word you're looking for is just "old."

Mario 1 the top Mario game, Sonic 1 the top Sonic game, Resident Evil 1 the top Reaident Evil game, Dragon Quest III NES the top Dragon Quest game, Final Fantasy III really high and above V, Mother 1 virtually tied with 2, Tales of Destiny making it anywhere near the list to begin with, Megami Tensei II above Shin Megami Tensei. Theres a pattern here. Looks like the poll respondents were pretty bad at recognizing a series got better after the game they got into the franchise on.

That Polygon article is kind of terrible. Not because they're wrong that Aria has advantages over the other two GBA games or Symphony of the Night but because those are pretty soft targets and they failed to even acknowledge the DS games exist.

It's the equivalent of arguing that one of the NSMB games is the best 2-D Mario by comparing it to Mario 1 and the Mario Land games.
