I'm surprised unit testing hadn't been brought up before now, but I agree that it's especially critical for ensuring that components do exactly what they're supposed to. Long before developers, other departments, and even end users would otherwise detect and report issues, the unit tests will catch them if written properly and comprehensive in the scope they cover. It spares the company a lot of potential man-hour allocation expenses, as well as whatever other costs would have been incurred had the issues surfaced in a production environment.

Only the arrogance of youth leads someone to write uncommented code.

in my opinion comprehensive documentation (e.g., in wiki or javadoc style) and variables / functions / classes that are self-explanatory and well-modularized are more important than commenting.

i mostly comment to offer my rationale with code that isn't so intuitive even with the aforementioned best practices, and to summarize functions if they aren't obvious from the names.

Lol, what do you mean by this?

NIH culture refers to companies that rely on software/systems they developed from scratch in-house rather than outsourcing their needs to software built and actively maintained by other shops. the endgame after like a decade or two of doing this is a mountain of legacy code only supported and used in the company and which, in time as old developers leave, nobody in the engineering department really understands and is afraid to touch for fear of breaking mission critical processes.

i took it upon myself to understand and maintain it, and over the years have basically become the lone authority on the entirety of the company's software systems infrastructure.

If big companies offer to pay me half of what they usually pay for those data, I'll make sure I get it to them in whatever form they want.
the tragedy is that they don't want to pay, and since everyone idly consents to the terms and conditions on these large platforms rather than exerting collective pressure for compensation (or protesting with their feet, so to speak), the businesses have free rein to harvest/monetize/buy/sell user data without having to ask.

an overwhelming amount of that data doesn't even come from what is consciously shared, such as posts, messages, prompts, likes/follows, etc. a lot comes from analyzing unconscious/latent behavioral patterns while using these applications - what users click on, what makes them stop scrolling a feed, when / where they're using the app, crossreferencing with data of other users they're physically proximal to, and such. data you couldn't even really explicitly prompt users for; only passively milk from them over a prolonged period.

these businesses should really just pay users on their sites a regular dividend.

Undeniably valuable to big companies, who will pay a pretty dollar to acquire it from third-parties who possess your private information.

But if you were to try to sell your own private information online, you get almost nothing in return. Can't think of any other commodity that behaves the same way.

to play the devil's advocate, it's why online surveys that pay participants exist.

the data of individual persons is valuable, but as far as businesses buying data are concerned, data is most valuable in a readily digestible manner since there are costs associated with pre-processing raw data, never mind potential integrity issues in the results. the data they buy tends to be prepared, unless they have some serious tools and infrastructure for in-house processing.

tl;dr businesses want cheeseburgers, not raw beef; gas from the pump, not crude oil.
