oh yeah Risk of Rain 2 is great. lots of powerups and easy game to sink lots of hours into. bunch of different characters that all play completely differently from each other

as for games:

there's One Step From Eden which is like Mega Man battle network gameplay (but it can get pretty hard, at least when I last played it)

Enter the Gungeon for twin stick shooting like Isaac. Rogue Legacy and Hades if you want progression between runs and Hades is obviously great in other aspects as well.

There's 20XX for a Mega Man X-esque roguelike

I think Isaac is worth looking past the theme/aesthetic personally but there are other options.

I think the big failing of BoI is that they don't tell you what the items do before you pick them up and I'm just supposed to remember what each of the 500 or so upgrades do
