That was until actual Cherokee's got furious because the book was clearly complete bullshit and a fake. At this time "Forrest Carter" became famous and started doing national TV interviews for the first time. When he did, everyone in Alabama sat up and went "Hang on a mo! That's the KKK segregation guy we ran out of town!" For perhaps the first time in history, the people of Alabama and The Cherokee were united in exposing this fraud and leaving him in disgrace and dishonor But then he died before the claims could be verified. Post death it was 100% confirmed that Asa and Forrest were the same person and every part of his biography was complete fiction. It was pulled by schools but other than that, nothing really happened. What could at this point? That is until decades later, long after the hoax was exposed. For some baffling reason Oprah recommended it as one of her books you should read. Native Americans were furious at her and after much pre Twitter yelling and letter writing she pulled the book from her recommended list. She has never commented publicly on it. So no one knows why she recommended a known piece of garbage fraud. Do you think she was so ignorant of researching books that she honestly didn't know it was a fake KKK dogwhistle?
