Yeah a Switch, Xbox Series X, and PS5 will all get you into a game significantly faster, and with digital libraries you can do this with multiple games without having to put a game in at all. This is also what makes quick resume on Xbox so cool because you can have at least three games ready to go from where you left off instantly. Its much more convenient. For turn it on and immediately start playing, things have literally never been better. There is no need to romanticise the days of the SNES and so on.

Its the boomer response.

The amusing thing is that A) obviously having an additional UI enables all sorts of enhancements to just your gaming experience, eg downloadable games, DLC, online features, quick resume, etc. and B) didnt the 360 later introduce a quick start option? So you get the best of both worlds. And to that note with quick resume on the current consoles you can get back into where you were in a game much faster than on old consoles like the SNES anyway. It just strikes me as a stance that ignores a lot of positive improvements that have been made for games.

Edit: Also if you are really a just give me the games! person your answer should be the Switch. You can boot into a suspended game straight from sleep mode without navigating the home screen, its fast and simplified, and it has all of the advantages for games of later UIs with almost no non-game related content. Its a straight upgrade over the old way.

I think that it is deliberately meant to evoke racism, sexism, and xenophobia, but in a subtler way. Walkers main issue is people being above or equal to him specifically. As long as hes on top, he doesnt care. When people stand up to him or beat him, you get the hints of discrimination.

The leak was Switch/PS4 physical in Japan, Switch physical in NA, and digital only in Europe. It was from a while ago so well see if thats still the same. Apparently the Japanese version will be dual language so worst case scenario you can import.

Personally I was fine with the switch because they also reduced the price, which would not happen today.

Has to be Turnabout Revolution. Getting a civil trial and facing off against Phoenix is fanservice every bit as good as playing as Edgeworth. Then the actual case writing is just terrific through both halves - that first half should feel like filler but its really compelling. Then the second half gives you big moment after big moment, has a great twist, and then finishes with a great ending to Apollos story. I think it stands above Bridge to the Turnabout.

After those two, Rise From the Ashes rules. Great use of a darker, more serious tone. Turnabout for Tomorrow is usually overlooked but its a great finale with a really shocking moment.

Then we have Turnabout Ablaze, which is probably the most underrated case in the entire series. It might be a section too long, but it has that incredible intro, the whole first part with Calisto Yew, and Tree Man deserves props for being the most stubborn villain of all. He really makes you hate him just through his sheer refusal to quit.

Its interesting in the original Nier that people often point out that certain moments (a couple with Kain and one appearance change) seem clearly written for young Nier, but there are also as many that are clearly intended for old Nier (the opening being a big one) so its weird, seems like they were splitting the difference. With that in mind them picking one is strange! Hopefully well see full old Nier at some point.

Also, I look forward to actually playing this game and not just watching a playthrough!

I only owned a PS3, and the answer is the 360. Games ran better, the UI was better, the controller was better, the online experience was better, and there was a bigger, broader game library. The PS3 didnt win on games, it won on exclusives that appealed to people who were really into games in the PS1-PS2 generation (not a huge library) and even then a lot of entries for those franchises and genres wound up being disappointing. Also when you factor console and timed exclusivity the 360 comes out on top.

Theres a reason Playstation emulated the 360 for the PS4, and they were hugely successful at it!

You say that, and I agree with you in theory, but on the other hand, WoW exists and the game design there definitely did not improve with each expansion! I think we all thought it would then Cataclysm (or to be more precise, post-launch Cataclysm) happened.

However, I do think there is a better overall vision for the dungeons and trials and how to fit them into the expansion, for instance compare the first HW dungeon to the first SB dungeon. I also was surprised by how much better the trial design was, while there was an upward trend for these ones there was a much bigger rise in quality imo, especially for the post-game trials. So Ill give SB that, it does feel like there was a bit of a rethink on how duties were being done.

FFXIV also isnt that long if youre just interested in it as a single player/story-driven experience (which is a majority of the playerbase). Its basically the equivalent of playing four mid-length RPGs because thats basically what it is. Id be a lot more worried if somebody said they wanted to get into the Persona franchise!

Okay, so first here are my overall Stormblood thoughts:

The main expansion is, put bluntly, seriously underrated. Its as good as Heavensward. The patches are not as good because despite being the shortest post-game it feels like the longest, and it lacks the explosive moments of the 2.x and 3.x storylines. The way the early patches develop one key character is a little contrived, but I found that storylines conclusion to be deeply sad so it worked out in the end. I think being sandwiched between the post-Heavensward storyline and Shadowbringers has unreasonably affected Stormbloods reputation.

The improvements Stormblood makes to the solo duty design (I went from ugh a solo duty to seeing them as highlights), trials (same), and dungeons cant be overstated. Its much more fun to play through with more big moments of spectacle as a result. It also benefits a lot from dropping the PS3, and marks the point where FFXIV goes from looking good for a 2013 MMO to just being a good looking video game. That said it does produce a weird effect where the base character models look much worse than everything else.

The story doesnt quite measure up to Heavensward and it is clearly two expansions put into one, but its pretty compelling most of the way through, it slows down in the middle 30% but the first 30% and last 40% are great. I think it deals with some of the most interesting and surprising themes and topics - theres colonialism, irregular militaries, chemical weapons, and it largely doesnt drop the ball (except for one particular bit involving refugees in 4.1 which just kind of gets shuffled to the side) which is impressive. I also think they weave the themes into the experience nicely, eg early on you hear the Garlean anthem for the territories, and you might think its weird that youre hearing the instrumental version of this in the resistance camps. Then you get to the end of the main expansion and they all sing the real Ala Mhigan anthem, then you realise that the Empire had taken the tune and replaced the lyrics with its own propaganda. Thats good stuff.

...Also Zenos is fine. Hes fine!

This. Its a display of human emotion towards someone he loves. Its a humanising moment. I feel that some readers get far too logical with their reads of characters actions and can sometimes ignore the emotional aspect of them.

Ehh I don't really like it. But I haven't liked any of it since Ymir/the space caterpillar was introduced. I think giving the Attack titan the ability to see the future/influence the past just makes the whole thing needlessly complicated. I'm also generally not a huge fan of "good guy becomes bad guy to ultimately do something good" tropes. Either make Eren go full on genocidal maniac or have him stay good the whole time.

I think this aspect was quite elegantly handled actually. The series takes a hard deterministic view of time travel where actions are written in stone. Eren was a slave to causality, and ultimately had no control over his actions. It happened because it happened, though wisely hes not made too sympathetic by saying that he may have gone through with it anyway. I also dont think its a good guy doing s bad thing for good reasons thing after reading the good translation - Armin calls it an error, it might not even work, and Eren could have stopped long before. It happened because it had to happen.

I dont think youre wrong to be down on Playstation. The Ryan era has been confused, going for a blockbuster-only approach but also trying to force games that obviously shouldnt be that into that mould like Returnal. Its a shame because I really like the pitch of the PS5 it just doesnt seem to be delivering on it.

Pretty good ending (to an excellent series) all things considered. However do yourselves a favour and be sure to read the official translation because the fan translations that were going around before the official release are terrible and make half the characters suddenly look like psychopaths.

Just to clarify, its not an estimated roughly 2100 copies sold. Its roughly 2100 sold MAXIMUM, as the bottom charting game sold 2170. It also failed to make the top 40 in the UK. Were looking at very low tens of thousands sold worldwide. Easily the biggest bomb I can remember from a major publisher.
