All right, reached the second save point and we've surpassed 6-1 for the third most lines in an intro case thus far. It'll certainly pass 4-1 for second, but passing E2-1 for first will be difficult at this pace, I think.

I picked Vivi > Ganondorf in 2018 because FFIX's 2015 showing and the FF polls in the last decade convinced me that Vivi > Squall and Vivi > Mario weren't flukes (I mean, Vivi > Mario kinda was, but 2004 Vivi doesn't beat Mario there even with Ganondorf).

The chemistry between Naruhodo and Kazuma is so good, and it's neat that you can really see the moment when Naruhodo takes the lead on the case.

Also, Brett is a nice throwback to the Dahlia Hawthorne type of dainty yet deadly villainess.

Gotta say, not a fan of Auchi's Objection. I think they were trying to recapture the shrill nature of Winston's, but it ends up sounding more like that Flynch guy from Layton/Ace Attorney.

Also, I enjoy reading the protagonist's dialogue aloud for story-driven games, so I've been reading Naruhodo's dialogue with a (hopefully passable) British accent.

That's what happens when they split the plot across two games, haha

Yeah, the plot was meant not to be resolved in a single game, so the pacing probably feels a bit strange as a result.

It was actually originally meant to be a trilogy, but apparently the first game did so poorly in Japan that it got shortened to two.

Also, it's interesting they spell it Jezaille Brett here. I guess it's an attempt to make it look like a more feminine name, but her name is a reference to the jezail bullet, which is what John Watson was shot with in the army in the stories. Makes for a fitting name in this case!

Made it to the first checkpoint. If anyone is interested in a line count sneak preview, this is what we've got so far:

The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)

Ryunosuke Naruhodo - 273
Kazuma Asogi - 175
Taketsuchi Auchi - 92
The Japanese Judge - 74
Iyesa Nosa - 55
Kyurio Korekuta - 37
Satoru Hosonaga - 32
Yujin Mikotoba - 16
Susato Mikotoba - 1
Sherlock Holmes - 1

(I assumed the person narrating the opening cutscene was Holmes, but I legit couldn't tell. If I made a mistake there, let me know)

(I'm also not sure if I should just call him Sherlock Holmes here or go along with this Herlock Sholmes business)

Truly insane video game storyline (in a good way), one I didn't think a fighting game was capable of. The final stretch is a bit rough, especially allowing Sindel to kill off a bunch of important characters in a matter of seconds. Just felt super rushed and unearned for a character no one truly cares about.

Yeah, it kinda gets sacrificed on the altar of the greater narrative, and the series generally doesn't do that. Probably the closest you get to it otherwise is 3-4 or 5-4, but it feels like Takumi's trying to write a Sherlock Holmes novel and the mystery has to keep thickening until the end.

And I'm with you on generally hating the jury. Takumi bewilders me with what he thinks a jury is across two different games (well, three, I guess).

I do love the Summation Examination music though. So good.

I loved case 3 because it subverts your expectations in pretty interesting ways. They present Van Zieks as this Grim Reaper type dude. He even looks like Miles Edgeworth cosplaying as Manfred von Karma (there was a part of me immediately wondering if he's von Karma's ancestor), but he doesn't feel like a bad guy by the end of it to me. He's almost like Blackquill in that regard to me.

On the other hand, you're used to getting good defendants, and in the couple of occasions you do have to defend a guilty dude, you get to nail them in the end. Instead, he gets away with it in a super sketchy way, and like you said, Susato doesn't seem to mind. It feels inherently unsatisfying if you're a veteran Ace Attorney fan because it isn't supposed to go like this, but it was a super memorable experience for me.

Well, I think it's a bit different for sports that matter outside the Olympics, like boxing. Being the heavyweight champ is more important than being a gold medalist boxer.

Same thing for something like basketball. Carmelo Anthony has won gold medals for Team USA, but it's barely a factor for most people when judging how good he has been as a player.

Yeah, that's why some people surmise that it'd be a 64-team coalition because they could just run their own March Madness every year, and every team gets in.

But there's no way Duke or Kansas is involved in something like that because it's based on football and they bring nothing to the table in that regard. UNC, Kentucky, and Louisville could maybe get a pass.

Leon do you have an opinion (or care whatsoever) on how the New and Improved SEC does their divisions or pods?

I'd be fine with realigning the divisions by geography, which would basically just move Alabama and Auburn to the East and put OU and Texas in the West in their place. I also do enjoy the potential hilarity of them trying to maintain the current East/West breakdown and throwing OU or Texas in the East for no rhyme or reason. I'd be cool with an annual UT/UT game!

Honestly, if they moved Auburn and Alabama over, they could get rid of the permanent cross-divisional game (since Tennessee/Alabama and Georgia/Auburn would play every year now as part of East divisional play, and those are the only two that actually matter). That would mean getting to play the other teams in the West more regularly.

That's the one thing I kinda hate about the way it is now (in addition to Tennessee being the only East team that has to play Alabama every year, which is a huge disadvantage). We only play all the other West teams once every 6 years (and that would become every 7 years if they don't change anything). Of course, they'd have to expand conference play to 9 games instead of the current 8 to avoid that, too, which means the big programs probably schedule more cupcakes out of conference to balance things out. Naturally, it becomes harder to play everyone the bigger your conference gets, but I like getting to play the other West teams more often.

I am low-key kinda nervous about these rumors about there eventually being this coalition of 40-60ish high profile college programs and everyone else getting kicked to the curb because Tennessee has barely been relevant in the last decade (we haven't even played in the SEC Championship game since 2008) and I'd be worried we'd get left out. I just hope Tennessee's history (we're still the 12th winningest program ever and have the third most bowl appearances ever despite the decade plus of mediocre or bad football) would allow us to get included, even if it means we'd be a punching bag at first (unless Heupel turns out to be the real deal, fingers crossed!).

This will be a bit of a different playthrough since I've already seen LPs of both games. I didn't think we'd ever get them, so I went ahead and watched them since I wanted to know how they went, story-wise. However, I won't openly spoil beyond where I am in the game, so for you newbies, you can follow without fear in that regard. I enjoyed my experience with them so much that they inspired me to read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and it really kickstarted my mystery genre fandom.

Anyway, the main reason I'm doing a separate topic instead of just posting in the SELF topic like I normally would is that I plan to do line counts and time stats for these games, and I know some of the people who'd be interested in that don't follow that topic (to my knowledge). If you're not familiar with it, I played through the series a few years ago and kept track of how many lines of dialogue are in each case to see which case was the biggest in that regard, and then I played through again and personally timed how long each case was to see which one took me the most time to beat. I've saved all that info on Google Docs if you want to check them out.

Time stats: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qSdmjcbQjG_QPBFylHNgk7oVXRbsSjDetdO8w7Ygh8k

Line counts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sBPDmATQERIv7R3VvvXx43DRJZNOwnSwmLkZhfWLqSc

So the plan here is for me to play through once and do line counts, and then immediately replay it to do time stats (since the goal is to time it based on just going straight through and not getting stuck anywhere along the way). I'll update the numbers each time I finish a case. Oh right, one "line" of dialogue is just one uninterrupted speech by the same character, regardless of the number of text boxes it takes.

I do intend to give my thoughts on the cases, the characters, and all that, too, but this is my primary motivator.

So here we go.
