I enjoyed the special a lot, but the lack of cohesive transitions or resets was a tad off-putting. It also felt like he utilized music a tad more than normal as well, but that could just be me misremembering his other specials. The bit where he reacts to his reactions was my favorite part. It felt like it captured the kind of anxiety I feel where I start getting really meta about why I do things the way I do and why I react the way I do. Welcome to the Internet is also a fantastic ear worm.

Seeing Bo's struggles was hard to watch as well. Hearing him tell the story about considering to go on tour again right before the pandemic hit was crushing. Bo is really relatable to me as a comedian because he's the same age bracket as I am and struggles with anxiety as I do resulting in a cynical, borderline nihilistic view on life. I could see myself going through the same issues he does if I had his talents and occupation. That makes the outward display of his internal struggle that much harder to watch.

The lack of Persona love was surprising to me, but I guess I contributed to that since I love the modern Persona series but didn't nominate anyone. No character from the series had more than one person nominate them. Those that made it in either were given a bolded nom or, in the case of Yu Narukaimi, allowed in on my discretion. Honestly, if Ganondorf or Princess Peach had received a single nomination, I most likely would've chosen one of them over Yu. He was among my final cuts.

I am very proud that my baby Spinarak made it into the contest!

They are the only "traditional" Pokemon in the contest as Blue and Giovanni are trainers and Mewtwo is something all his own. They carry the weight of the everymon on their shoulders entering the contest.

I can if it's important to you. I was going for consistency within the franchise. Ryu and Vega don't have last names and I generally don't see Street Fighter characters recognized with them. Of course I know very little about Street Fighter in general, so if this is a sticking point I'm happy to oblige.

I looked at them when they were in beta and didn't like them. Submitted a feedback ticket but I don't think I worded my concerns in an understandable manner because the response I received was "click the gear if you want to go back to the more classic style" which was a bit of a concern but I was more concerned with how bunched up and lifeless everything looked.

Hopefully now that it is live they'll get more, err, constructive feedback and make changes to keep the "soul" of the boards intact because as it stands now it just seems like some random post and forget shit posting place.

I chose Goro Majima, Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, and Princess Zelda from the batch of characters with four nominations that got there by way of double nomination. Majima, Phoenix, and Edgeworth I chose because I wanted to avoid them ending up in the same group with either each other (Phoenix and Edgeworth) or their in-game counterpart (Majima and Kiryu). Zelda headlines because she's Zelda.

I'll do the draw either this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. Round 1 probably starts on Saturday.

Round Formats:

Round One (200 characters)
20 groups of 10 characters. Users vote by assigning +3, +2, +1, -1, -2, and -3 to characters. The bottom three placers from each group are eliminated.

Round Two (140 characters remain, 120 participate)
Winners of each group in Round One receive a bye in this round. Groups from Round One are randomly paired together and the characters from each group face off. Individual matchups are determined by finish in round one. 2v7, 3v6, and 4v5. Users vote by splitting five points between each character in each match. In essence, you are voting 5-0, 4-1, or 3-2. The losers of each match are eliminated.

Round Three (80 characters remain)
All characters participate in Round Three. Characters are randomly put into eight groups of ten characters. For each group, users vote by ranking them +10 to +1. The bottom five point getters are eliminated.

Round Four (40 characters remain)
Also known as the World Cup round. Characters are randomly drawn into ten groups of four characters. Each character faces the characters in their group round robin style. Users vote as they did in Round Two by splitting five points between the two characters in each match. Winning a match gives you +10 to your score. The bottom two in each group are eliminated.

Round Five (20 characters remain)
Also known as Boot and Immune. Characters are randomly drawn into two groups of ten. Each day users vote to boot one character and immune one character. The character with the most immunes at the end of the day moves on followed by the character with the most boots being eliminated. Boots and immunes are aggregate.

Round Six (10 characters remain)
Also known as the Golden Parcel round. Characters are randomly drawn into 1v1 matchups. Users vote by ranking each character participating in Round Six +10 to +1 once. Each day, however, users may award a golden parcel to a character of their choice which gives that character +5 to their score. The loser of each match is eliminated.

Round Seven (5 characters remain)
A nebulous round. This time I've decided to do a round robin format similar to the World Cup round. Each character faces each other once. For each day, users vote by splitting five points among the four users participating that day. However, both matches must receive at least one point. Welcome to the re-branded contest. There was some confusion over the "of the Year" terminology and I realized that saying "of the Year" is not as indicative of the UotY format as I figured. Moving forward, we'll just call it what it is: the hunt for Board 8's favorite video game character.

There was a nominations topic used to determine our field of entrants which I'll be listing in the next post. There were 188 characters that reach a tally of two or greater nominations. Basically if you got a count of two nominations, you are in the field. While I didn't intend for a double nom to mean immediate entry into the contest, the number of nominations wasn't there to allow for a higher barrier to entry, and, given the participation in nominations, I didn't feel throwing over 200 characters into a prelim would be a good idea. Instead we'll roll right into Round 1. To get to 200 characters, I basically used my best judgment on historical GameFAQs contest support and my perceived popularity of the character on Board 8 to select the final 12 entrants from the pool of 156 characters who only had one nomination. In hindsight I think I know a better way to have gone about nominations, but you live and learn and I'm still excited about the contest ahead. Thank you to everyone who nominated and provided input during the process.

As for Round 1, the characters with the highest nomination tallies will be the headliners of each group. Ten characters had 5 or 6 nominations, so they are obvious headliners. 16 characters had four nominations. Six of them reached four nominations without a double nom, so I'll throw them into the headliner pile. That leaves four more characters to choose from the remaining ten. I'll use my best judgment to select the remaining four. I'll post all that information tomorrow. Later this week I'll be drawing all the Round 1 groups. I'll do it live in the contests tab on the Board 8 discord. After that I'll post all 20 groups in this topic. The contest will begin in earnest shortly after.

This topic will be used to post results of each day of the contest as well as be open to any discussion regarding the contest or matches or anything adjacent. It will also be where group and match assignments for each round will be posted once they are fully drawn. I will also field any questions, comments, or concerns as they may arise. I will also be an active participant in the contests tab on the Board 8 Discord should you prefer that forum. In the posts to follow, I will post the official list of entrants as well as the scheduled rounds and a brief description of the rule set used.

In RPGs I'll spend way too much time talking to everyone in hopes that their dialogue has changed. It's like I don't want to miss any sort of missable dialogue. I've been playing Trails recently and while I'm rewarded for doing that for the most part, I just finished the 3rd watch had me swapping my party often to trigger dialogue and also laboring over who to take with me where. At least I never reloaded a save to see extra dialogue. It hasn't gotten that bad yet.

Here are my opinions about the lack of interest, as someone who doesn't vote in "user of the year" topics normally. Please don't take any offense:

* "Video game character of the year" is kind of confusing. Are we going to have polls for each year? (best video game character in 1998 vs 1999?) I understand people who vote in the "of the year" polls understand this, but if you want to bring in casuals you might consider rebranding.
* Being able to nominate any video game character from any time period and any gennre is more daunting than it seems. I suggest another topic with a base list of 50 and ask the board to nom characters not on the list. This sounds counter-intuitive, but if you give us a list of "already includeds" people might find the nominating process more interesting.

I actually had some initial confusion when I saw the topic title until reading the instructions. So I think thats a valid point that some casuals might not be realizing what the contest is actually about.

These are good points. I can change the name to something like "Board 8's Best Video Game Character" or something like that going forward. I also did flirt with the idea initially of coming up with a list of characters that were automatically in, but I nixed it because I didn't want to be too subjective with it. If I devoted more time to the idea, I probably could've come up with a decent criteria that I'm happy with. I'm very hesitant to reboot nominations because I don't want to confuse/discourage anybody who has already nominated and moved on. I guess if I could get confirmation from many of the 17 people who've nominated already, I'd be open to it.

Sound of Silver was my first LCD Soundsystem album. 11 or 12 years ago, I did the whole users nominate songs for me to rank topic and All My Friends was one of them. It sat at #2 for the longest time until I finally resisted the urge to keep longtime favorite Say It Ain't So at the #1 spot and swapped them. If I were to make any sort of "all time favorite songs" ranking, All My Friends would be Top 10 without any doubt, and I hesitate to not just say Top 5 as well. I love this song. There are so many metaphors one could use to compare this song to life. Unfortunately, I don't really have the capacity or desire to do that at the moment, but I know they are there. I wrote at the time of ranking that this is the kind of song that in the future I would find myself drunk listening to it and starting to cry 5-10 years down the road. While that hasn't happened, I still don't rule out the possibility.

That's a lot to write towards one song, but Sound of Silver isn't just a one song album. Someone Great is the perfect lead-in track to All My Friends and forms one of the best two song punches an album can have. I can only hope that when I die I had such a profound impact on somebody's life that they experience these emotions about me. It was also fun that when I listened to 45:33 that Someone Great found its start there. While it's not a one song album, it can certainly feel like a two song album at times given my love for Someone Great and All My Friends eclipses anything the rest of the album could possibly hope to achieve. Get Innocuous is a geat appetizer and North American Scum is a lot of fun. However, I find myself tuning out a bit after the climax of Someone Great and All My Friends. I actually enjoy Us V Them and Watch the Tapes quite a bit, but I still feel like I'm almost laboring through them after the emotional journey of the two tracks that preceded them. It doesn't feel right to go to dancey dancey good time, but that's a place where more metaphors about life could be inserted by somebody who loves to wax philosophical more than I do.

Sound of Silver is super great, but in a way having two of my favorite songs in existence on it, especially smack dab in the middle of the track list, hurts my enjoyment of the album as a whole. Because of this, I probably prefer This Is Happening if I were to choose to listen to an LCD Soundsystem album. However, I would still recommend Sound of Silver, perhaps even as the first album, to anybody curious about listening to LCD Soundsystem.
