Do you know why your national bird was chosen?

Forgive me if it's common knowledge. I'm not trying to patronize. It's just that "Do other nations teach their children why the national bird is what it is?" is one of those questions people seldom think about. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something they teach in elementary school. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something nobody really stops to think about. It's kinda like asking, "Do they have commercials for waffles in your nation?" (On a side note, do you have commercials for waffles in your country?)

America's national bird is the eagle. Yeah, I know. It's kinda like saying Mickey Mouse is the Disney mascot. I think that should be pretty obvious considering how much we shove the eagle down everybody's throats. Anyway, it was chosen because of the ancient Roman fasces; the symbol of power in which an eagle is presented holding a bundle of arrows. If you ever want to say America is a fascist nation, objectively speaking, you're at least partly right.

I hate this fucking high school football mentality. "We showed them," is not the endgame of politics. Trying to rub one another's faces in the mud just means that nothing gets accomplished.

America is at a complete stalemate because giving the opposition the middle finger is priority over housing people, providing healthcare, securing our freedoms, closing the wage gap, or protecting the environment. Officials never have to make good on their promises. They just have to point the finger and say that the other party is preventing them.

As long as we're content to see the world destroyed so long as it means destroying our enemies, no one will ever get anywhere except those who already hold the cards. You never have to hold your own accountable, or keep them to their promises, because you're too busy painting devil horns and dictator mustaches on the competition.

Yes, yes. Because Sith Lord Trump said "both sides," objectivity has been abolished. One side is always good. The other is always bad.

Just because the idiots on one side outnumber the idiots on the other, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of stupidity to go around.

Let's be honest here, both sides know how to play the "far end opposition" card. It's the thing that frightens the most people. Tell democrats that every conservative is far-right. Tell republicans that every liberal is far-left. Nothing stirs people to alertness (and action) like painting politics as though we were looking at Nazism or Stalinism in our immediate future.

It always surprises me when I see this. Northern US newspapers were unkind to Disney's Song of the South when it debuted in 1946. A 1955 John Wayne film Blood Alley, centering on Chinese refugees fleeing communism, was likewise controversial in its day for how Chinese characters were depicted.

Yet, it wouldn't be until the late 1960s that there became a boom in inclusiveness in Hollywood. The Civil Rights movement was in full swing. Independent and low budget filmmakers could produce their own movies and promote their values. (Soon to be denigrated as "blaxploitation" in magazines and newspapers.)

It's interesting to note that there was always a fight going on for better treatment of minorities in film. Yet, it took several decades to build momentum due to the overwhelming opposition. We're far from being altogether out of the woods as far as that fight is concerned. But it's crazy to think about how casual racism persisted so strongly in Hollywood.

Of all the bad decisions Sega had made, the one Sega fans seem most bitter about is the lack of a proper Sonic game on the Saturn. Sonic received a racing game and a compilation of 2D games with a 3D hub world linking them together:

I can't help but wonder how things might've been different. Sega of America gave up on the console a year before Sega of Japan did and Sega never recovered. When the Dreamcast came out, it sold well in Japan but tanked on the international market. A combination of better offerings on the horizon (PlayStation 2, X-Box) and a lack of trust from getting burned by the Saturn and 32-X spelled Sega's demise.

It might sound silly to ask if a console's fate might've been different based upon a single title, but think of what might've happened to Nintendo had Mario Kart 64 and Pilot Wings 64 been the Nintendo 64's launch titles. If Nintendo hadn't released Mario 64 as a launch title, I could very well imagine the same thing happening to them. I think I would've opted for a PlayStation and I was a total Nintendo fanboy as a child.

The typical Hitler Jugend hairdo literally had shaved sides and hair combed to the side asymmetrically.

>fascists demand symmetry in art
>fascists standardize asymmetry in children's hair

I can't say I'm surprised about the Nazis being hypocrites, but it's pretty shocking to see the fascist cut of yesteryear become the antifascist cut of today. I'm going to start referring to those as Jugend cuts. I'm not above drawing allusions to Hitler to shame people away from having a bad haircut.

I get why this haircut exists. It's a sociopolitical statement.

Fascists like order. When you get down to it, fascism is the notion of order taken to its extreme. ("Get in line or be removed!") Fascists dislike the abstract or the asymmetrical. They want things symmetrical because symmetry is order. When a woman cuts one side of her hair, but not the other, she is making a statement that she is outside their control. She is outside their order. In that regard, it is a noble act of defiance against a tyrannical movement.

But it's gaudy as fuck. Hair is the make-it-or-break-it attribute for physical attraction. The more young women are encouraged to make their statement with their hair, the fewer attractive women there are in the world. It's such a turnoff for me that I won't save a group photo if one person in the picture has that kind of hairstyle.

And it's rapidly becoming the default way for young women and men to express themselves. If you want to show that a character is trendy, that they have a finger on the pulse of what youth culture is all about, you give them that hipster haircut.
