Speaker Norln has had meetings with the leaders of all 8 major parties today. Conservative leader Ulf Kristersson has now been given the 1st attempt to form a new Government. He has until Friday, then there will be a vote in Riksdagen. Kristersson got the assignment since he is the leader of the largest party which voted to remove Lfven.

A fun fact about this is that there's no majority among any party's voters for this kind of reform. It's entirely driven by lobbyists. And a significant majority of C voters would have preferred a collaboration with V over what we have now. People are getting pissed off and soon we'll see which party makes the most out of that.

That is most true. In polling released today V and SD seem to be the winners short term at least.

They pretty much summed up the debate and the different viewpoints. I guess we dont have a hardcore pro-market rental advocate here but they would argue that market rental WILL help solve the lack of housing and it is only very attractive areas which will see a price increase.

Last Monday he lost a Vote of no confidence called for by the Far-Left since his government was working on a proposal of market rental. The Nationalists, the Conservatives and the Christian Democrats joined in and thus a majority was against him. The Conservatives and the ChristDems support more sweeping market rental than the proposition being worked on so they voted against Lfven in a bid to gain power.

Lfven had until today to choose whether to resign or to call an extra election.

I can see how she'd want that but, I'm not sure it would work. For all their insistence on sakpolitik, V now have a golden opportunity in an election with a focus on two of their most popular issues, market rents and vinster i vlfrden, what with healthcare being highlighted due to covid, and private schools getting more and more attention recently. There's pretty wide agreement across the entire spectrum on these issues among voters, but not among parties.

This Government took over after Flldin. Ola Ullsten was the PM.

Also C's latest talking point is bugging me so much. "We're the party who are willing to cooperate with the most parties" at the same time as "let's focus on sakpolitik".

I agree with you there. S need to do like Danish S: focus on pensions, vlfrd, limit profits in vlfrd while also focusing on law and order.

I think Annie Lf is trying to create a situation where she becomes PM until the ordinary election. As a super minority Government which works with different parties on different issues. L had that position for a year in the 70s or something.

True. But I respect the point that V is making, namely that if they waited for the bill, it would be too close to the regular election for the right-wing parties to bother with the misstroende in the first place. And hey, Lfvn even stated in his "offer" that if the parties can't reach a deal, they would go with the SOU line. Either way, I can see your point, it's just that I'm a bit too cynical to consider that even a small win for S.

And yeah, a lot rests on V not getting pinned with the blame. ...which pretty much all the big media outlets are attempting at the moment.

That is of course a risk, that a bad bill could have passed if it was close to September 2022.

I just wish we could get to know the way forward now. An extra election is feeling most likely due to C digging their heels in and L declaring JK dead.

Half-Swedish (dads side) and half-Finnish (mums side). My maternal grandpa was born in a Finnish speaking village to Finnish parents in northern Sweden and my maternal grandma came to Sweden as a kid during WW2.

Not sure I'd call it even that, considering that any apartment that was "majorly renovated", as well as any apartment formed by using up new space like attics, counts as new in the SOU.

As for speculation time, I would consider it quite likely that S loses votes to V after all this. I'm pretty unsure how it will affect C votes. The rest I expect to more or less follow contemporary polling. This is why I'm thinking that a new election isn't necessarily what a lot of people want. Heck, I think even SD/M/KD don't want it, because they aren't very likely to rise in popular opinion after one year of governing. What's your guess?

A SOU is a SOU and a bill is a bill though. The actual bills are often changed in different ways in order to pass through Riksdagen. We dont need to look further than the new LAS where the end result is fairly different from the SOU :)

Maybe, but the polling done also indicate that most voters dont want this chaos with either new Speaker rounds or an extra election so V could get hurt if pinned with the blame. It is a gamble for them. We agree that most parties dont seem to want an extra election right now. L, MP and KD are all in danger and the others will either remain the same or sustain damage by the proper election in 2022 as a cause of the extra election.

This topic went to so many places. Jesus.

Anyway, to the actual issue. I just woke up from a nap so Im a bit foggy in my head but bear with me. S still doesnt support market rental but C, L, MP, M and KD do. The 73 points which make up JK are a mix of Socialdemocratic, Green and Liberal policies. It took 4 months, as my fellow Swedes know, to form a new Government after the 2018 election and it usually takes less than 20 days. The basis for the solution to this straining process are the 73 points. If any of the 4 parties (S, MP, C or L) now object to 1 of those points then the entire agreement falls. All 4 parties are thus eager to keep what they promised in January 2019 in order to be responsible. S, MP, C and L all had victories and compromises when the JK was formed. For S, since 5 outta 8 parties in Riksdagen support market rental, it was a small victory to limit it to new buildings. C and L could also tout it as a victory since it was more than nothing. The biggest problem in a sense is that our politicians, and many voters, in several parties, dont wanna accept that we have a very special situation in Riksdagen after 2018 where no one is close to their own majority. Not even S and M together have majority which is a new reality. S and M shouldnt govern together and they wont govern together unless There is War but this means that smaller parties like V and C get disproportionate influence since they are needed to get a majority.

Im honestly quite scared of the Far Right. Imagine extreme Trumpers but more polished with tidy hair and simple but elegant suits. The party was founded in 1988 by a man named Gustaf Engstrm who moved to Germany during WW2 in order to serve Hitler. Engstrm was an SS-officer. For some reason he never stood trial and lived in Germany for decades after the war. He moved back home to Sweden and founded the party before dying. The current party leader, Jimmie kesson, joined the party in 1995 when it still was openly Neo-Nazi. Several of his closest people are pals of his since then.

The party has a cleaner surface since entering Riksdagen in 2010 and most who vote for them are not Neo-Nazis but the core of the party is so rotten. They talked about inherited essence as late as 2019. People with different inherited essence should not live in Sweden. One of their high ranking members openly say that you cannot call yourself both Jewish and Swedish. They oppose same-sex marriage and adoptions, insemination for single women or women in a same-sex relationship. They wanna limit abortion. They wanna bring back an archaic taxation practice which made it economically negative for women in a relationship to have a job and combine that with a special monthly housewife payment for mothers (not immigrant mothers of course).

Immigration was too generous 2006-2015 and that is what the Far-Right is using to gain voters.
