Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 14 complete!

Congrats, Eren, you've become the tool of a tool in the name of "freedom." Either that, or he's pulling a Lelouch gambit, and I'm not sure which is worse. Oh well, at least Levi got to stick it to Zeke again, although I'll always be nervous as long as he's alive. I kinda wish they'd just decide it's not worth it anymore and just kill him now.

I can't really ding 5-4 too much for not feeling like a complete case, when G2-4 is a much worse offender about it. That one felt like it was split up to signify a tone change, since G2-4 ended after the second investigation day.

oh yeah that one felt more arbitrary than 5-4 because at least 5-4's signified the end of a case

Oh, FFVIII is built on its collective cast chemistry more than individual interactions, for sure. I only brought up FFX because it was mentioned earlier.

I also think it's legit impressive that FFX managed to make Kimahri feel like part of the team despite how little he speaks.

I wouldn't say FFX is a particularly notable example of character interacting with each other individually. Yuna and Tidus do, but they have to. Auron, Rikku, Wakka, Kimahri, and Lulu generally only interact with Tidus/Yuna (excepting Wakka and Lulu interacting each other other).

Well, I was talking about the cast chemistry of FFX as a whole. You have several notable group scenes where the entire cast (sometimes even Kimahri!) contributes. You never really feel like any of the cast is completely irrelevant (unlike, say, FFIX).

I don't even consider 5-4 to be a full case

5-4 gets an unfair rap for this and I think it gets penalized in a lot of people's minds for it, but I really like what they did with this case. Cosmos is a top tier witness, and it has legit one of the most shocking ends of a case in the series.

I actually don't think this cast gels all that well but that's a minority opinion I'm sure!

I think I kinda agree with you. The heart-to-hearts give you the opportunity to see the characters interact with each other individually, but it doesn't feel like they interact a ton collectively. That's what sets something like FFX apart from Xenoblade.

(I also don't really care about anyone beyond Dunban, Melia, and Shulk, but yeah)

I wouldn't actually, most JRPG protagonists aren't nearly as mature or intelligent as Shulk. Which is why he's the perfect JRPG protagonist in my eyes - he manages to hit the sweet spot between 'young and going on a coming of age journey' and 'mature enough that you don't roll your eyes at his internal struggles'. He's a character that works both for the target audience of teenagers and an older audience.

Eh, he still manages to hit a lot of the JRPG protagonist tropes. He doesn't hit a lot of the hotblooded shounen hero tropes though, which often intersect with JRPG protagonist tropes.

I guess Shulk is "perfect" in the sense that if I were to try to describe to a non-JRPG player what the average protagonist is like, I'd probably describe something similar to Shulk

Or Lloyd Irving

A wide variety here!

2-4 > 1-4 > 3-4 > G2-4 > E2-4 > 5-4 > L-4 > 4-4 > E1-4 > 6-4 > G1-4

Maybe? The top three are set in stone. The rest, not so much.

Yeah, I think there's an easy justification to be made through Rayfa's growing attachment to Phoenix if they had just taken the time to include it.

(Phoenix/Rayfa is such a good duo though. It does so much for Rayfa's character because I really hated her after 6-1, and I swung all the way in the other direction after 6-3)

Also forgot to mention: franchise fatigue. The Ace Attorney formula hasn't changed since 2001.

Eh, I don't totally agree with this. PW1 feels different than every other game in the series. The formula the series follows didn't really get codified until T&T.

And AAI2 is better than AAI1 in every conceivable way.

4-3 is also kinda underrated, it's like probably the only time in AA4 that I actually had fun with any of the characters or the murder setup, lol. The video isn't THAT bad. The sound board was fun. This is also the only case where Apollo has personal stakes and isn't just getting dragged around.

I get what you're saying in a sense. The Apollo/Daryan showdown is pretty good.

But the logic of the case just doesn't work at all. It makes absolutely zero sense for Machi to be a suspect. The prosecution's case is full of holes and yet Apollo can't seem to find a single one of them. It's kinda frustrating and makes him feel a bit incompetent. Like, I get Phoenix had derp moments in PW1, too, but his mistakes feel more like naivete and inexperience more than straight incompetence. It's the only case that can actually make me angry while I play it.

I totally agree with you on 2-3 though. I ranked it second to last, but that's just because I really like most third cases.

Now this should be good.

E2-3 > 1-3 > 6-3 > L-3 > 5-3 > G1-3 > G2-3 > 3-3 > E1-3 > 2-3 > 4-3

The first five are all top 10-15 cases in the series for me. Such a loaded case number.

2-2's first trial day is just one of my favourite experience of overcoming a difficult, oppressive situation without it feeling unfair (it's a good frame job which is tough to poke holes in). Like... even when you finally get the Cornered music playing it still feels like you're scrambling for a lifeline in the best way possible.

I agree with this, and I think it's probably part of why I'm not a huge Franziska fan because she's never the same after Phoenix breaks through her attack here.

Also, I think E1-1 is super underrated. It's short, but solving a case in Edgeworth's office is really fun, and the trick with the two different visitors is really good.

I think it's solid. It has its high points. I like investigating Edgeworth's office (literally the only time in either game we get free reign to walk around, which is a shame), and Portman is a fun opponent. I just think the section out in the hallway drags a bit, but I could be persuaded to move it up a couple spots.

Now for something completely different

Had to combine the DGS games into one entry because I didn't realize there had been 11 Ace Attorney games at this point, and the DGS games are probably the least widely played at this point anyway.

E2-1 > 4-1 > 3-1 > 6-1 > G1-1 > G2-1 > 1-1 > 5-1 > E1-1 > L-1 > 2-1

Something like that. There's a pretty big dropoff after the first three.

What's the shorthand for DGS cases anyway? It's going to be The Great Ace Attorney once the localization announcement is made (hopefully soon!). DGS or GAA are both too long, but D or G don't seem right either. I guess we could do R or N for the protagonist like with the Edgeworth games.
