I think the increased commodification of the internet is immoral. I was looking for a glass elephant figurine a couple months ago for a gift, and to this day I'm still getting targeted ads from a figurine site that's like $50 out of my price range.

It's also hamstrung content creators on YouTube and elsewhere. I've been following a daily webcomic called Questionable Content since I was a teenager, and the handful of times it's gotten particularly racy - literally a handful of comics showing naked flesh in nearly 4500 comics - the creator has had to consciously rein it in out of fear that Google AdSense will be disabled for him, which would cut off a primary source of revenue. Though the advent of Patreon has helped with this, and I think he does commissions on Drip so like w/e. Still kind of fucked up that in a comic spanning thousands of pages, Google can up and leave if the art crosses a line once, taking someone's lifelihood with them.

And of course, you have the corporatisation of YouTube, specifically COPPA determining which channels get the big bucks - the most sanitized, child-oriented content - and which get nothing in ad revenue - blood, swearing, sexuality. It's to the point where YouTube creators won't swear any more, because their videos won't show up in people's subscription feeds.

If you give a company an inch, they'll take a mile. They'll note that you've been looking for a product and shove ads for that product in your face. They'll take your IP, location information and user engagement with their website and ads, compile a dossier on you and sell it to other companies so everyone has a more complete profile of you to sell you stuff. I understand that websites need revenue, but advertisers have been overreaching for far too long and there are alternate methods of supporting businesses and creators that doesn't fuck you in the ass as much as rampant advertising does. I use Duck Duck Go on my phone, and despite the occasional interruption to whitelist a website, I don't regret it. If everything I do on the internet is going to be used against me in the name of corporate profit, then I want to mitigate that as much as possible and fuck the outlets that make it possible in the first place.

Jumping in from the first 10 posts, seeing a bunch of deflecting and arguing about the US and stuff. To which I say my usual piece:

The way that China treats Uyghurs is absolutely vile, we should absolutely be shaming them for having literal fucking re-education camps, there are reports of people being forcibly sterilized and injected with mystery chemicals and there have been reports of illegal organ harvesting for years. People are being sent to these camps on trumped up charges and held for years without a trial, being interrogated for 8 hours at a time, and either eventually being trotted out in front of a judge to be judged as innocent or disappearing without a trace. That's not "sinophobic" - that's what former detainees and whistleblowers have been saying for years, including Uyghurs who fled China due to rising backlash against the Uyghur population and who were called back to China on false pretenses only to be thrown in prison for years. I understand that bigots like to take bad shit and use it as an excuse to express their bigotry, but you can't throw all of this away as racism and bigotry when China have a habit of fucking disappearing people they don't like. It happens every so often to anti-CCP scholars who moved to Australia to escape persecution.

None of what I just said invalidates the issues of America or Australia. America absolutely needs to shape up with how they treat asylum seekers and immigrants. ICE is an evil organisation, the centres where they're keeping immigrants are inhumane and wrong, and the fact that they're building more is a travesty. Australia's detention centres are so bad that a man wrote a novel about how he and his family were treated there - on a phone he had smuggled into the detention centre, where he still resides. The Liberal-National government have made conditions completely inhumane for asylum seekers, keeping them detained for the better half of a decade if they can't find a way to send them back or send them somewhere else, and they justify it as "being hard on them will deter them from trying to come here". Despite the fact that A) most illegal immigration happens via overstaying one's visa - we had that one on lock years before Americans were too stupid to realise a border wall wouldn't stop the bulk of illegal immigration - and B) the people who are being put in these camps are from war-torn nations, where their families have either been slaughtered or face certain death if they return. Our government, who came into power in 2013 on a slogan of "Stop the Boats", is absolutely dogshit in regards to immigration and border security, and Australia is absolutely complicit in human rights violations.

Now, here's the concept I want China shills to understand the most:

Nothing about the latter invalidates the former, either.

We absolutely should keep an eye on what's happening at home, within our own borders, and we should hold our own government, and the people who enact/benefit from these cruel acts, to account for them. That doesn't change the fact that China is committing genocide against a religious minority, that there have been accounts of people being unjustly imprisoned and outright disappearing for decades, that China has re-education camps where prisoners are fed propaganda, interrogated for hours on end, beaten, submitted to medical testing against their will, forcibly sterilized and - possibly - being harvested for their fucking organs.

Nothing invalidates that. People can care about more than one cause, especially if they're actively aware of the bad shit happening where they live and actively oppose it. Oh no, my government is corrupt and inhumane - guess I can't talk about the people who are summoned back to China and imprisoned without a trial for years, or who are never seen again. No - I understand that my government is cruel and inhumane, and I don't support my government on principle because of the blatant corruption, greed and disregard for human life they exhibit. I understand that the people of China are beholden to a genocidal government who have pushed propaganda to such an extent that the nation has its own isolated internet, and its own phone app where you're encouraged to watch Xi Jinping speeches and then tap the screen to simulate clapping for more social credit. I don't support bigotry against Chinese people, and I'm appalled that people have stooped to bigotry over stuff like Covid-19, but China - the state of China, headed by Xi Jinping and the CCP, with its decades of espionage, false imprisonments and unabashed use of re-education camps - is a malevolent entity that deserves to be criticized by anyone with a heart and a brain.

Do you go after people who talk about the Kurds and Armenians too? Can I not express my disgust at Turkey for the wanton displacement and massacre of the Kurdish people because my country recently deported a New Zealand teenager without informing the NZ government? Should I not care about Azerbaijan trying to wipe out Armenians, or Russia/Crimea rounding up gay men and beating/killing them in clandestine locations, because my nation fought a lengthy court case to try and deport indigenous people? Because I can assure you, the things my government have done are absolutely fucking monstrous on their own. But that doesn't change the depths of human depravity that other nations indulge in on a regular basis and it doesn't change the injustice of those actions or the disgust I feel as I hear about these people being forcibly exterminated by a ruling power. It's the same reason I speak about America with such disdain over your COVID death toll, or your rampant mass shootings. Your culture and its complacency with massacre and death is disgraceful, and you have the gall to go after other countries for their "lack of freedom" because we don't have an equal firearm-to-person ratio or because we enforce mask mandates to prevent 1% of our population from dying of plague.

We can't pretend that we don't have our own problems, but we can sure as shit bring attention to other nations who are COMMITTING GENOCIDE THROUGH WANTON VIOLENCE, FALSE IMPRISONMENT AND FORCED STERILIZATION. The problems of our own nations don't disqualify us from bringing attention to that, and to see users who I've otherwise liked in the past take this dogshit troll position of "you're just being sinophobic, pay attention to your own garden before you pay attention to theirs". I know my garden's a fucking mess, as is the garden of my neighbours. But that doesn't exclude me from shitting on your garden when there's so much that's absolutely, ass-fuck backwards about it. And it's sick that you would either troll to that effect, which is petty and evil in the enjoyment that you must get from people who actually do care, or actually go to bat for a nation committing genocide against an ethnic minority - in which case, you're genuinely a sick motherfucker, and I hope your hero's welcome after the damage has been done is punctuated by a pair of handcuffs and the same awful treatment against you that you deliberately and maliciously ignored.

I like boards, but feeds are fine. The big issue with feeds at the moment is that they're not in chronological order - and that they once were in chronological order, but have been changed into these crazy, random, endless lists of meaningless shit where you can't find anything in between the awful clickbait dogshit that groups and pages peddle for the maximum amount of "engagement".

Like, it's a fucked up world we live in when Tumblr has one of the most bearable "feed" functions for a social media website. Not as robust as Reddit, sure, but not quite as ready to ream you with intrusive ads or posts out of turn either.

I'm about to play that journalling game Anti-Binary. I feel like it's a therapeutic process of assessing your feelings on gender, but the author has dressed it up as a singleplayer journaling game as a way to engage people who might otherwise find the process to be daunting or "off-limits" in a way.

The way it works is that you ask yourself questions. I think they have to do with gender specifically, but I'll have to check the PDF to make sure. The questions are being asked by three selves: a male self, a female self and a genderless self. You answer each question as yourself, but also as each of them.

How do you know it did?

This is the first we're hearing of it, and it's been happening for the better part of 30 years. If it was a problem before now, the people involved have either gotten over it, moved away to let the community do their thing in peace or accepted it as a part of the neighbourhood and joined in. That, or there would be more news about this gathering being a nuisance or being a general source of controversy.

There might have been a smattering of complaints for all we know, but the thing is that we don't know. Until that information comes out, we're working with the assumption that this has been an accepted part of community life for the past 30 years - given that they've been doing it weekly over that span of time - that is now being challenged by a growing wave of gentrification.

I don't understand wanting a themed console. Like a controller, sure - shit like the Dragon Quest slime controller and the Silent Hill chainsaw controller are badass. They're fun little collector's items that affect the way you play and are fun to try out. I love different controllers.

I can understand wanting a cool setpiece, but I'd never shell out for a limited edition console because it's just an aesthetic thing and there's nothing special about it otherwise. I could take a paint brush to my Switch dock and make something nice if I wanted to, I don't need to pay extra for a cool looking piece of plastic that's unremarkable in every other way. It's the same thing otherwise - it has the same functionality and it plays the same games the exact same way.

And here's why I recommend not taking anything on rant grumps seriously. They have this weird mentality that they're gonna "finally take down" the grumps (like why, who the fuck cares about these stupid youtubers) to the point where anything that fits their confirmation bias is "evidence".

That's why I approached my post in the way that I did. The facts of the matter were:

• Rant Grumps have been trying to make this happen for a while. They have grievances ranging from a silly misdirection being emotionally manipulative to Dan being a sex offender - they're committed to showing the Game Grumps in the worst possible light.
• Dan has a history of like groupie shit, but the allegation basically boiled down to "I met Dan at a Grump event when I was 17, I then met him at a show when I was 22 and that's when we talked and had sex". No proof that he was grooming her for any of that time, or at all.

I stand by my statements about fame and implicit power, and I do think that Dan needs to - for lack of a better term - be careful with who he hooks up with. As a public figure, whether he intends to or not, he can cause harm to a lot of people. He should be mindful of that.

But this is why I took that specific angle with my post. Because he wasn't behaving like Quinton Flynn, lying to his fans and actively manipulating them for sex and putting down other women in his life to emphasise the connection he has with them. He wasn't texting underage fans and trying to smash like Ryan Haywood. While not exactly appropriate for a 40 year old man, he was playing the field as a part of his dumb rockstar fantasy. Sources of information, and the intent of their information, is important to note.

I think we were right to take this seriously, but with the internet being the internet, we were quick to condemn and take all the information at face value - even from an unquestionably biased source. Next time, let's discuss the issue at hand and how it relates to the allegations, and wait to see if the allegations hold water.

Tbqh I'm surprised this hasn't become some sort of official event by now. They've been doing it every Sunday for 30 years, but it's still just a big informal gathering

I mean, it's a time-honored local event, and it's an understood process among the people who participate and it has been for around 30 years. Not everything has to be subject to paperwork and turned into a "rich display of local culture" for tourists to gawk at, or a rigid process to be followed to the letter. This is their thing - there's an understanding.

Sometimes, you hear the words coming out of someone's mouth, and it's such an unpleasant surprise that it sours you on them. Even if they go back on it later, it can be hard to trust someone after that trust has initially been broken.

It's pretty repugnant that Jon would push this racist narrative of the white man being bred out of America by immigrants - it's bad enough that he's the child of immigrants pushing this stuff, but the basis of that viewpoint was initially made by the guy who first raised the idea of eugenics. It plays on painfully outdated "barbarians at the gates" rhetoric, and insists that the proliferation of "inferior" genes is a wide enough threat to civilisation that removing another people's right to breed is a net positive for humanity. And it starts with that "replacement" bullshit, with the implication always strongly suggested to be non-whites replacing white people and subsequently being stopped from breeding to "maintain civilisation".

Whether he realised what he was saying or not - and I do think that Jon was cognizant of what he was saying and the aims of that rhetoric - to face such blunt, racist rhetoric from someone you took as a good-natured comedian is a serious shock, and whether he later recanted or not, the damage has still been done.

It's like, you're talking with a cool guy at a party. You have a similarly edgy sense of humour, you get on like a house on fire - and then you learn he buys into that sovereign citizenship stuff and thinks Obama was a reptilian jew overlord. Everything he said before was tinged in an appealing sense of irony, but this stuff comes out of left field and stands on its own as a statement as opposed to being a punchline to anything. You sure enjoyed that Rick and Morty discussion earlier, but to continue with him after what you've just heard, you'll always be on the lookout for the next dipshit dogwhistle or "redpill". The trust has been lost.

Alright. For context, I saved Kaidan in ME1.

When the Jack stuff started talking about an insanely powerful biotic in a maximum security prison, I thought it was gonna be Kaidan in deep cover - he hadn't appeared in the game, and that's how they re-introduced Garrus, so I thought they were gonna be doing a lot of that. Maybe he was there to track a dangerous criminal, or investigate corruption - but they were gonna wheel him out, he was gonna talk shit and you'd have to find a way to get him out without breaking cover - before things inevitably go FUBAR in the typical Mass Effect style.

In the event of an Ashley playthrough, maybe she got an implant to play the part - and also to incorporate some of Kaidan's moveset as a tribute - or maybe the Jack quest would be replaced by another Ashley-specific quest. I definitely wasn't expecting a bald, nearly naked woman named Jack with a shaved head and a body plastered with tattoos, that's for sure.

You'd have to be nuts to say that Zack Snyder is the worst director of all time. Saying that, if I had a choice between dying of liver failure and only being allowed to watch Zack Snyder movies for entertainment for the rest of my life, I would strongly consider the liver failure.

I do think it's obscene that he's handling 9-figure movie budgets and shitting out the sort of stuff he's shitting out, but that's more of a personal opinion and a shot against Warner Bros. than anything else - and frankly, saying that he's the worst director of all time is like saying that Rebecca Black is the worst musician of all time. It's a stupid, short-sighted complaint that's trendy.

I do think he's my least favourite superhero director. If he wants to do super gritty, overly stylised superhero action movies, he could do some good work with whatever edgy Dark Age comic book characters DC could scrounge up from Image or Vertigo. I'm not a fan of his take on Superman, and it bugs me that we're going into a future where Cavill's Superman is the norm. But having been a fan of Best of the Worst in the past, I can't reasonably say that Zack Snyder is the worst director of all time. He simply isn't.

I don't think he should be handling piles of money that are larger than any of us will ever see in our lifetimes to make massive franchise movies, but at an absolute baseline, I've seen worse movies than whatever I've seen from Zack Snyder. They're movies that have been staffed by idiots or incompetent directors/screenwriters/actors, made on a budget so small that the funding for BvS could probably have funded them 100 times over at least - but fwiw, they do exist.

Honestly, I view Jacob as a victim of poor writing. It's like, there's a difference when a character is shitty and you hate them because the writing is bad, and when a character isn't written well in whatever way and it sucks because you like them. Jacob is the latter for me.
