Ill never forget I got called in for jury duty.

Memorial Day weekend.

I waited from 8am till 2:30/3:00pm when they end potential jury selection. At the last FUCKING possible minute they called in a new pool of jurors. I was one of them and it was one of the most defeated feelings ever.

as soon as we were brought to the room to be sequestered the judge told us to come back tomorrow to continue. We were the only people there that next day.

it was a such a dick move. I was even happier to make a bullshit reason up NOT to be a juror.

copied from Reddit about the Mary Gregory situation. Again, Reddit. But if the story checked out this way and the numbers are true then like I said competition committees are going to have their plates full if there are more instances like this.

I'm going to weigh in on this as I'm one of the guys in Canada who helps run this federation.

When we found out about this, the 100%RAW executive circled the wagons and spent almost 2 full days trying to figure out how to handle the situation. A lot of thought was put into the decision and when the dust settled, 100%RAW will not include Mary's records in the female division, but in an entirely new division for transgender athletes. We didn't think it was fair to the biological women in our federation for Mary to compete as a peer, but we also didn't want to exclude people like Mary from enjoying the sport of powerlifting. This was the least worst option we had at our disposal at the time.

Now some facts. (And this is not to belittle Mary in any way) But when we found out about this, I did some number crunching to see if pure math could help demonstrate if this was just a baseless belief that transgender women had an advantage in female sport or if there was any merit to it. A lot of the numbers used in the male calculations come from Mary's Instagram feed as I was not able to figure out what name she used when she was male, and thus could not track down any meet results from that time.

As a male, Mary posted the following numbers pre HRT on her Instagram account

Squat - 408
Bench - 298

Deadlift 507
Total 1213
Bodyweight - 217

9 months after starting HRT. These numbers were what she got at the meet in question

Squat - 314
Bench - 233

Deadlift 424
Total 971
Bodyweight - 179.3

Now that's about a 20% drop in all her lifts after going on HRT, and about a 20% drop in bodyweight. That's to be expected as the body adapts to the new hormone levels. In powerlifting, we use the Wilks coefficient to determine the best lifter across all weight classes. It takes your total, and modifies it based on a mathematical formula to allow you to compare yourself against everyone else. Men and women use different formulas as their physiology is different.

Mary's Wilks score using the male data was 337. After 9 months of HRT, when Mary competed in the female division her score jumped up to 399. That's a 62 point jump (a 20% increase) in her abilities compared to her peers in less than a year. So in nine months, on HRT which reduces testosterone, muscle mass etc, Mary had gains the likes of which are only seen in brand new lifters who are still learning how to powerlift.

When I compared Mary's results to the database in Open Powerlifting, a website dedicated to recording statistics for all powerlifting federations around the world, here's what I got.

In the 40-44 age group, Mary's male ranking was at the 38th percentile. So better than average, but still middle of the pack. Using her numbers as a female, she moved into the 6th percentile. So top 10% in all of women's drug tested powerlifting in that age group. If all things were equal in the HRT process, we should have seen Mary's results put her in the 38th percentile of female lifters, but that clearly did not happen.

Once again, I have to stress that neither I, or my federation wants to ban lifters like Mary from competing. In fact one of our core beliefs is that if you can lift a barbell, and you aren't taking PED's, then you have a place with us. But it's very clear based on the numbers provided that Mary received a performance boost from transitioning from a male to a female lifter compared to her peer group. That's not at all fair to the rest of the lifters in that division.

So going forward, we need to keep looking at how to handle this so that neither the transgender lifter, nor the rest of the division is put at a disadvantage when a male athlete transitions into a female athlete. Everyone has a right to be who they are. It's a freedom not many people get to have in this world and we're lucky to have it.
But that freedom should not come at the expense of others, so we feel that ongoing study is needed to try and narrow the performance gap we currently see in situations like this.

100%RAW has a constant mission to bring powerlifting to as many people as possible, but we also need to respect the rights of everyone and assure that fair play is followed as best we can.

Darksouls can have its frustrating moments for sure. But Ive never gotten stuck in a soulsborne game to the point where I couldnt get past it without practice or strategy.

having said that - there is a sense of accomplishment getting through those games. And there is no way adding a easy mode would diminish those accomplishments if they keep the difficulty as the default for veteran players.

I've been a holdout with a lot of older iOS devices and I've never ran into any issues outside of demanding games not loading and running as smoothly as they should. You're getting at least 4-5 years of guaranteed flawless performance.

I've tried to switch to Android several times, but even as the years progressed and the OS became more robust, there's still so much that could be improved. I don't want to sift through a million different models of phones and settle on one, only to wait months after Android OS releases to get an update. I wish it worked like Windows, where I could easily just flash a stock Android ROM on anything.

this is what annoyed me the most with Android.

when a new update would come out you could be waiting months for it to officially drop to your phone or carrier.

same phones, different carriers and you would be sitting for a while on the old OS version.

Also - yes. From what Ive witnessed in, say, Brooklyn. Urban areas that were once lower income and cheaper to live became occupied by transplants who were looking for that lifestyle.

they rented available apartments. Reducing supply. Pumped money into the area opening businesses or supporting certain businesses. Demand increased, prices raised. More move in because its the new hot spot. Development increases, demand increases, price increases.

soon you price out the original tenants and they cant afford the leases and since theyre not government subsidized that makes it hard to get rent stabilization. Better laws need to be introduced to prevent over inflation of the market so quickly. As well as fixing stagnant incomes.

and to further my point - my dad owned a building in down town Brooklyn for manyyyyyyyyyyyyy years. It was a very commercial/industrial area. Real blue collar and low income. He was offered a substantial amount of money to sell. So of course at his age he took it. He was retiring and didnt need the building anymore.

now its being demolished and theyre building a condo.

christ - 50+ years LGBTQ acceptance was an absolute joke. Today it is becoming more and more embraced and encouraged to be who you are. But of course youre going to have people who disprove, you wont eliminate that stigma any time soon. But those people are usually the older crowd or people who come from antiquated family values. Their values and beliefs will hopefully die off with them over time.

I dont think bill was saying to stop fighting the good fight, but being miserable and bitter because you THINK things are as bad as theyve ever been is a shitty attitude to have.

Its hard to rework a cash gacha game like this cause you cant WEAKEN characters, only boost them or make difficulty different and then rework characters.

So if they do raise level cap - they have to figure out a few things.

if theyre going to rework difficulty and design.

if theyre going to rework certain characters and skills. If they do they cant make characters worse.

and then the cost of upgrades cannot maintain the same plateau its currently on. Getting a character to 90 is expensive as fuck already - 100 would be mind boggling expensive unless they find a way to make materials easier to come by.

which, again, goes with the ever increasing roster of characters where many people who are not whales are not going to pull for characters they cannot level.

dont forget write offs you have during the year such as expenses and children expenses the government cannot fully account for.

and on the spin side - you can always opt to withhold more or less and adjust your dependents if you never want to get a refund or pay. Most people just choose to go with standard withholding and deal with it during tax season.

after paying the last 3/4 years on average 4k a year I got a refund. And I gladly accept a refund over paying that much in one shot.
