Holy shit, that video in #332 makes it clear as day that she was maybe one or two seconds away from plunging that knife into the other girl. The officer acted quickly and justifiably, there's no other way for me to interpret it. He saw a violent attacker with a weapon in the process of trying to stab somebody and he ended the threat as he saw it.

there's a point where infections are low enough to seem manageable, and then suddenly they tick up slightly and nothing can stop the spread anymore. We hit that point in the USA a few months back, but we seem to be over the hump now. Nothing to really do now for India, except hope people get as many vaccinations as possible.

Also, apart from politics, many people are making good points. American comics are often a convoluted mess of crossover issues and obscure references to older stories. Even in the classic comics you'd see all kinds of asterisks after names or events in the dialogue, with a footnote saying something like "for more about this, see Batman #4356."

It takes years of dedicated reading to understand the complexities of the DC and Marvel universes. For a manga, even one as huge as One Piece, you can start by buying volume 1, then 2, then 3, and so on, and you'll never miss any crucial information because it's all one self contained, continuing story.

Even if a work isn't expressly "political" the author will still always leaves bits of their own values or world view in it.

I'm not just talking about general notions of "war is bad and oppressive governments will wreck your shit" like Gundam. I'm talking about the stuff that's explicitly referring to our exact world in our exact times.

When authors comment on current events through the mouths and thoughts of their characters, there's a disconnect between the character and the reader. It's no longer "Superman protects all humans despite their flaws," and it becomes "Superman takes sides based on the author's personal views."

It's just a symptom of too many authors and too much self indulgence. I want to read a story about characters and their problems. I don't want to read about characters and our problems.

I once saw a woman in an SUV flip her entire shit when a coupon for a free Big Mac got turned down because the location wasn't eligible.

I was in the car behind her, and I just suddenly see the whole SUV start bouncing and swaying. I heard some muffled words, so I rolled my window down to listen.
