Could you be a better governor than Florida Man?

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/us/live-news/coronavirus-pandemic-07-30-21/index.html

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order that directs the state's health and education departments to issue emergency rules that prevent the implementation of a mask mandate in schools.
A news release from the governor's office said that executive order 21-175 was issued "in response to several Florida school boards considering or implementing mask mandates in their schools after the Biden administration issued unscientific and inconsistent recommendations that school-aged children wear masks."
It added that this was done "to protect parents freedom to choose whether their children wear masks."
The executive order states that if the State Board of Education finds a school district board unwilling or unable to comply, they are able to withhold the transfer of state funds, discretionary grant funds, or discretionary lottery funds until they do. They may also declare the school ineligible for competitive grants.
The latest data: DeSantis' order comes after the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled guidance earlier this week that people in areas with "high" or "substantial" Covid-19 transmission should resume wearing masks indoors. Over 75% of the US population live in these areas.
The CDC released a new study Friday that shows the Delta Covid-19 variant produced similar amounts of virus in vaccinated and unvaccinated people if they get infected.
The finding that the Delta variant resulted in similar viral loads "was a pivotal discovery leading to CDC's updated mask recommendation," Walensky said Friday.
"The masking recommendation was updated to ensure the vaccinated public would not unknowingly transmit virus to others, including their unvaccinated or immunocompromised loved ones," the CDC director said.
Couldn't get a direct link, it's a few stories down

Really trying to cull the retiree community, huh DeSantis?

tions. If a Public Emergency is declared but no steps are taken to address it, is it really a Public Emergency?

https://katv.com/news/local/arkansas-governor-to-hold-news-conference-as-covid-19-cases-surge

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Thursday declared a public health emergency amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and announced a special legislative session to change a law that prevents public schools from requiring masks.
Hutchinson said the declaration will allow the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management to seek staffing assistance from health workers outside the state. It also eases the process for retired health workers to re-enter the workforce and for medical students to become licensed.
The Republican governor said the White House is sending federal assistance at his request.
A previous emergency declaration expired May 30 as cases declined and vaccinations increased. But vaccinations have since reached a plateau, leaving the state with one of the lowest vaccination rates in the nation. The low vaccination rate and the spread of the highly-transmissible Delta variant have driven a surge in new cases and hospitalizations.

The state reported 2,843 new cases Thursday, one of the largest one-day increases since the pandemic began. Eleven more deaths were linked to the virus, bringing the state's total to 6,110.
Hospitalizations decreased by nine to 1,055, among the highest counts in the past six months. There were 219 patients on ventilators, or more than 20 percent of patients.
Unvaccinated people have accounted for more than 95 percent of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the state since Jan. 1.
Hutchinson said Thursday that he'll call a special legislative session next week to amend Act 1002, a law he signed in April that prohibits state and local mask mandates. He said he's "very concerned" about children age 12 and under who aren't eligible to be vaccinated and schools should be able to decide their own mask policy.
Leaders in the Republican-dominated legislature told the governor that amending the law will be a "heavy lift" but that it's not impossible.
Hutchinson said there will not be another statewide mask mandate or new restrictions on businesses.

I'm beginning to think these Republicans don't know how to govern

Do you know anyone who honestly believes the election was stolen from God Emperor Trump?

https://huffpost.com/us/entry/us_61025da5e4b0d3b5897a4afa

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said Wednesday that the vast majority of his Republican colleagues dont believe ex-President Donald Trumps election lies, even though they may continue to peddle them in public.
Save one or two maybe out here, nobody and I think its very important to repeat nobody actually believes the election was stolen from Donald Trump, but a lot of them are happy to go out and say it was, Kinzinger told CNNs Wolf Blitzer.

Blitzer asked Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the nine-member House select committee investigating the U.S. Capitol riot, if any of his fellow GOP lawmakers had actually privately said to you, Good work, I support you.
Yes, oh yeah, yeah, responded Kinzinger, who has become one of his partys fiercest critics of its twice-impeached former president.
Is it just one or two? Is it a handful? Give me a ballpark number, the CNN anchor pressed.

Theres a lot of people, you know. And they come up and say it, replied Kinzinger. Its not any of the ones that go on TV and spout the big lie and then say it. Its the ones that are staying more quiet that I think appreciate the stand. But its a lot.
Blitzer asked Kinzinger if hed thought of switching parties.

No. Look, Im a Republican at heart, right? he replied. I was a Republican way before Donald Trump, since I was 6 years old. I believe in the values Im fighting for and I believe that a party of such a great rich history deserves to have people, even if its only a couple of us at the moment, in there fighting to restore the soul of it. So Im gonna fight hard for that.

I didn't have any kind of phone in high school.

Even in college I just had a Tracphone that flipped open, for emergencies only really and I only ever used it like... Once or twice.

Idk what the policy regarding phones was. I'd take my DS/PSP to class and the only times I got caught, one teacher yelled at me to put it away and the other confiscated it for a day. So I imagine phone policy was likely similar in nature.

Is it un-American to get Vaccinated?

https://www.ocregister.com/2021/07/26/anti-mask-huntington-beach-restaurant-says-it-will-only-serve-unvaccinated-diners/

While the emergence of the Delta variant of COVID-19 has many businesses and consumers proceeding with caution, Basilicos Pasta E Vino in Huntington Beach continues with its campaign of noncompliance with state safety recommendations. It recently posted a sign saying it will be asking diners for proof of being unvaccinated.
Its the latest in a series of defiant actions from the restaurant, which started with an anti-masking campaign in May 2020. The restaurant asked customers to remove masks when they were inside.
A message from ownership posted Saturday, June 27, 2020 on social media explained, So to be clear, if you enter the restaurant for dine in, and want to wear a mask, you must remove it when sitting down. If you are standing around inside and waiting for a table, or waiting inside to pick up food for yourself or as a third party delivery driver, and you are wearing a mask, you will be asked to wait outside.

The businesss stance put its liquor license at risk when it was accused by the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control of being a disorderly premises. The license is still active, but The case is pending, and the department is unable to comment on pending litigation, said a spokesperson for ABC.
Still, the restaurant maintains its position. We feel blessed to go into battle against all of you in defense of American liberty and freedom, so bring it on! read its latest message posted today, July 26, on Facebook.
Owner Tony Roman did not respond to an email request for comment. But in the past the restaurant has been outspoken about its views on social media and by advertising, at one point taking out a billboard in Los Angeles near the Beverly Center with a nod to The Godfather.

"Leave the mask, take the cannoli, read the sign, which showed the iconic puppeteers hand from movie posters for Francis Ford Coppolas classic film and the name of the restaurant. Its a replica of a smaller sign that was posted in the shopping center where the restaurant is located on Brookhurst Street.
The line refers to a scene from the movie in which Clemenza and Rocco whack Paulie. Leave the gun, take the cannoli, says Clemenza to Rocco after the deed is done.
According to its Instagram posts, Basilicos was fined $152,060 by Cal/OSHA on June 17, 2021 and responded on July 10 by posting names and phone numbers of administrators and inspectors that supporters of the restaurant could call to voice opposition, as well as film clips from the Godfather films suggesting the restaurant would refuse to pay.

Are Republicans currently reaping what they have sown?

https://www.businessinsider.com/arkansas-governor-people-call-vaccine-a-bioweapon-mind-control-2021-7

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he is working against misinformation as he travels around the state urging residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Hutchinson, a Republican, told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" on Sunday that resistance to the vaccine has "hardened in certain elements" because of "false information" and "myths."
"As I go into these town-hall meetings, someone said, 'Don't call it a vaccine, call it a bioweapon.' And they talk about mind control," Hutchinson said. "Well those are obviously erroneous. Other members of the community correct that."
Misinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccines has spread online throughout the pandemic. A study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate looked at 812,000 anti-vaccine Facebook posts and tweets made between February 1 and March 16. The CCDH found 65% of the content came from a group of 12 users dubbed the "disinformation dozen."
On Facebook, those 12 people were responsible for 73% of anti-vaccine content. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nephew of President John F. Kennedy and a prominent vaccine opponent even before the pandemic, was one of the 12. Another is a natural-health doctor who has published more than 600 articles disparaging the COVID-19 vaccine.
Hutchinson is traveling around Arkansas, where vaccinations are lagging and COVID-19 is surging, to encourage residents to get vaccinated.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compiled by the Mayo Clinic, 35.9% of the state's population has been fully vaccinated, while 45.2% has received at least one dose. That leaves the state with one of the lowest vaccination rates. Only Alabama and Mississippi have a smaller percentage of fully vaccinated residents.
Arkansas is also among the states seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases as the Delta variant rapidly spreads.
Hutchinson also said Sunday that the rise in cases, especially as young people are being more affected, could encourage more people to get vaccinated.
"We are seeing younger adults going to the hospital. And people in Arkansas and across the nation respond to risk," he said.
