I like how Russia is taking all the blame when other countries had similar programs. People seem to forget China's doping in the 90s is one of the reasons along with the Tour De France doping in 1998. WADA was created in first place. 1999 was the start of the new era in testing as Lance Armstrong won the Tour De France that year.

I have a VPN and have been alternating between Canada's CBC or UK's BBC for all Olympic coverage.

Im thinking of doing the same. NBC was actually forced to spoil the Simone Biles story since it went viral in the morning and they save gymnastics until prime time. I know it going to keep happening given the time zones. So trying to see as much live as possible

The Olympics always has commercials in the long races. Have you never watched them before?

Just because they have done it before doesnt make it right. It should be like soccer where they dont air commercials until the half. If the athletes at an event are still in action there shouldnt be commerical break.

If they want to air commercial breaks maybe air sports where the athletes take breaks or it is finished within 10 minutes. NBC has Peacock now they can put the longer events uninterrupted on that.

They are not what they have been made out to be, "the end of covid forever".
I mean, this should have been obvious since flu shots haven't eradicated the flu.

Yes it still works. It prevents you from dying.

But the thing is every infection is an opportunity for a mutation. If vaccinated people can still spread it doesnt that throw a wrench into that whole 70% vaccinated of adults with one dose number meant herd immunity.

Obviously CDC has since backtracked and said wear masks but previously that was the mantra. And that wasnt even taking into account children under 12 werent vaccinated and could still catch it and cause a mutation.

https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-will-require-vaccination-or-weekly-testing-all-city-workers

Beginning in mid-September, New York City will require all of its roughly 300,000 municipal workers, including police, firefighters and teachers, to either be vaccinated against COVID-19 or tested weekly. The mayor's office says the policy will be announced Monday. Under the latest plan, all city workers must comply with the vaccination-or-test rule beginning on September 13th, which is also the first day of public school in New York City. However, for 45,000 city staffers or contractors who work in residential and congregate care settings, the deadline to comply will come earlier, on August 16th. As part of the transition to spur more vaccination, the city will double down on its existing mask mandates for unvaccinated employees. All city workers must show proof of vaccination starting August 2nd or be forced to wear a mask at all times. The new directives come less than a week after Mayor Bill de Blasio issued the "get vaccinated or get tested" rule for the city's 42,000 public health workers. About 54% of all New Yorkers have been fully inoculated to date, but the pace of vaccinations has been slowing, leading experts to worry that the more contagious delta variant will fuel a rapid surge in infections. The latest seven-day average of total cases is 824, more than double the number two weeks ago. The daily positivity rate has also climbed to 2.27%, after being well below 1% in June.

Dr. Denis Nash, an epidemiology professor at CUNY, applauded the new policies as "a big step in the right direction." "It acknowledges that many people are still not vaccinated in this city right now and that steps need to be taken to protect all New Yorkers today, and not just those who are vaccinated today," he said. "It seems like a return to a public health approach. We need multiple strategies right now, not just vaccination." But while experts have stressed the importance of public outreach campaigns, many, including Nash, have argued that the city should also reinstate an indoor masking rule for everyone, similar to what Los Angeles has done. Currently, vaccinated New Yorkers must only cover their faces on public transit and inside schools, hospitals and congregate settings like homeless shelters. Those who are unvaccinated are supposed to wear masks in those scenarios, too, and whenever else they share an indoor space with strangers.

Good the more people given ultimatums to get vaccinated the better.

This is the moment an off-duty city firefighter walking his dog in a Queens park is attacked by a vicious mob of teens one of whom kicked off the beatdown by declaring it was Fight Night, disturbing new video shows. The 44-year-old victim was hit in the head with a bottle at around 9:55 p.m. Friday in Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village and then pummeled by the group, he told The Post. There were at least 100 kidsI was walking my dog. They just picked me out and approached me, the still-shaken member of the FDNY, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Post Saturday afternoon. One kid took his shirt off and said, its Fight Night! He said he was 19 and said, I could fight you. Everyone took their cell phones out. There were cell phones everywhere, he explained, adding, They all came at meA kid came up behind me and hit me in the back of the head with a bottle and I let go of the dog, he said. They didnt care at all. The kids were going crazy. They were as high as a kite.

In the video, the mob can be seen closing in on the victim, clad in T-shirt and shorts, putting up his dukes as his 3-year-old Labradoodle Dylan barks in protest, a vain attempt to protect his best friend. Give him a shot! Give him a shot! Give him a shot! one teen says repeatedly, video shows. Yo, what the fuck! shouts a stunned onlooker as the unidentified victim is pummeled on the pavement. Holy shot (sic). Old guy with a dog got fucked up, one teen says in a Snapchat. The victim continued: I got hit, turned around, thats when the kids started coming at me.Then I was on the floor, holding one kid and an ambulance pulled up..They were waiting by the parkIf they werent there I would have been in much worse condition. Im a little lumped up. What are you going to do? Thank god Im still here. It could have been worse, the victim, who has three children, said. Police on Saturday confirmed to The Post that the victim was struck in the head with a glass bottle at 75th Street and Juniper Boulevard North. No arrests were made. The victim, who turned down a trip to the hospital, said there have been lots of incidents recently in the park, which has become a haven for out-of-control teens from all over the borough. Kids are getting bikes stolen, an older man got beaten, he said, adding he found three knives Saturday in the park that he planned to turn in to police. The victim said one group of kids was irritated when he scolded them about jumping the fence of a daycare center across from the park. Another resident, who was not harmed, complained about illegal fireworks being set off.

https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news/2021/07/23/mask-mandate-said-to-be-imminent.html

The governments of St. Louis and St. Louis County said they'll require masks be worn in indoor public places and on public transportation beginning Monday, a return to restrictions as Covid-19 cases rise. The new rule will require everyone age five or older, including those who are vaccinated, to wear a mask indoors. "Wearing masks outdoors, especially in group settings, will be strongly encouraged," a statement from the city and county said. Exceptions will include people who are seated in a restaurant or bar eating and drinking and individuals will disabilities that prevent them from putting on or removing face coverings, the governments said. Mayor Tishaura Jones and County Executive Sam Page are scheduled to hold a press conference Monday morning on the mandate. The governments hinted this week that such a move could be possible. On Tuesday, they released a joint statement saying a new mask mandate was a "topic of conversation." Also Tuesday, the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force, a consortium of local health systems, urged all residents, including those who are vaccinated, to return to wearing masks in public places. The city and county earlier this month said even vaccinated people should wear their masks indoors with people whose vaccination status is unknown. The two governments lifted mask requirements in May, after earlier lifting capacity restrictions on businesses.

New mandates could prove a tough sell for some. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues with guidance that it's safe for fully vaccinated people to shed their masks in most indoor settings, though there are questions whether that should change.

The City and Borough of Juneau announced it will bring back a number of mitigation measures on Friday aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19, as cases of the virus continue to rise there. The city has raised its overall community risk level to moderate, a move officials were considering earlier this week. With that risk level designation comes a number of restrictions to capacity at gyms, bars and indoor gatherings, according to a Thursday press release from the city. All mitigation measures go into effect at noon this Friday. They include: Gyms are reduced to 50% capacity. Indoor service bars are reduced to 50% capacity. Indoor gatherings are limited to 50 people, with masks required, unless a COVID-19 mitigation plan has been submitted to and approved by the City and Borough of Juneaus Emergency Operations Center, or unless all individuals at the gathering are fully vaccinated. The city recommends having outdoor gatherings instead of indoor ones. Personal service businesses must require appointments, and shall not have waiting areas.

https://www.kcra.com/article/vaccinated-sacramento-mother-regrets-not-wearing-mask-protect-children-covid-19/37096474#

It is a rare breakthrough case. A Sacramento mother said she regrets not continuing to wear a mask after being vaccinated, now that her whole family has tested positive for COVID-19, including her young daughters. "I wish we would have done things differently," Emily Baker Hurley said. She and her husband loosened up on their COVID-19 precautions after getting their second Pfizer shot in April. Now, she said, her husband has a mild case of the disease and she has an asymptomatic case, but she is worried about her 5-year-old and 9-month-old daughters. They, of course, are too young to have been vaccinated. "The kids have been really really sick. One hundred and three [degree] fevers, diarrhea and vomiting," Baker Hurley said. "It's been especially scary with a baby." With the delta variant and more people out socializing now, COVID-19 cases are increasing. The overwhelming majority are people who are not vaccinated, including children under 12 years old. The vaccines are not yet approved for children that young. The American Academy of Pediatrics said Tuesday more than 23,550 child cases of COVID-19 were reported between July 8 and 15 nearly double what was being reported in late June.

"The COVID cases are really shifting to younger ages, and that is because we've done a very good job of vaccinating the older age groups," said Dr. Dean Blumberg, a pediatric infectious disease expert from UC Davis Health. While still in much smaller numbers, he said, vaccinated breakthrough cases are also on the rise. He said there might be more instances of it with the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine compared to Pfizer and Moderna based on preliminary data. "Getting breakthrough cases doesn't mean the vaccines aren't working. They're still working very well to prevent the disasters we were having last year when hospitals and ICUs were overcrowded," Dr. Blumberg explained. The director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called this the "pandemic of the unvaccinated." People who are unvaccinated account for more than 97% of COVID-19 cases in the hospital and almost all of the deaths. However, the vaccines are not 100% effective. So, doctors say, those around people who are vulnerable, like children who are too young to be vaccinated, may still want to wear a mask indoors and in crowded places as an added layer of protection on top of being vaccinated.

Two more Texas state House Democrats who traveled to Washington, DC, last week have tested positive for Covid-19, the Texas House Democratic Caucus said in a statement Sunday evening, bringing the total number of infected legislators to five. The lawmakers are part of the group that left Texas, flying from Austin to Washington to break the state House's quorum and block Republicans from passing a restrictive new voting law. The caucus had decided to undergo rapid Covid-19 tests after the initial positive tests, according to the statement, which said the two additional infected members were fully vaccinated and that "all of the HDC Members who tested positive are feeling good, with no symptoms or only mild symptoms."

Fully vaccinated people who have been exposed to Covid-19 but are not showing symptoms do not need to quarantine or get tested for the virus following their exposure, according to current CDC guidance, unless they are in a correctional or detention facility or a homeless shelter. While in Washington, members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus met with Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as with members of Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/18/uk/boris-johnson-covid-gamble-freedom-day-intl-gbr-cmd/index.html

On Monday, Boris Johnson will place English citizens at the center of an experiment that will give some indication of how well a highly populated country with surging cases of coronavirus copes when lockdown restrictions are lifted. In Johnson's favor, most of the UK's adult population is now double vaccinated. However, while those vaccinations have cut the numbers of people suffering from severe illness and succumbing to the disease after more than 128,000 deaths, the number of cases is rising. There is also scant evidence that vaccines prevent the worst effects of long Covid in those who become infected. Despite Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland -- the other, less populous, nations of the UK -- also being highly vaccinated, it is only England that is taking this leap on Monday. As of Monday, almost all of the restrictions in England will be lifted. Mandatory mask wearing will be gone, limits on the numbers of people who can mix indoor or outdoor will end, social distancing will be limited to people who have tested positive for the virus and airports, and venues like nightclubs and sports stadiums will be free to open at full capacity.

Johnson admitted that this would mean reconciling "ourselves sadly to more deaths from Covid." But, he added, "if we can't reopen our society in the next few weeks, when we will be helped by the arrival of summer and by the school holidays, then we must ask ourselves when will we be able to return to normal?"

As he is saying this he is spending the next 10 days self-isolating after contact with a confirmed coronavirus case.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8036558/covid-vaccine-second-dose-canada-passed-us/

The percentage of Canadians who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 has for the first time surpassed the United States. As of the afternoon of July 17, Canada had vaccinated 48.64 per cent of the population with two doses, according to COVID Tracker Canada. By comparison, 48.4 per cent of the American population were fully vaccinated, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported. This comes less than two months after Canada eclipsed its southern neighbour in terms of single-dose coverage. The vaccination gap between the two countries started slowly narrowing as Canada began ramping up its distribution in May. The supply of doses is now on the verge of outstripping demand, according to government officials. Meanwhile, the U.S. too has an abundance of vaccines as its vaccination rate has slowed down. Experts believe it may be because vaccine hesitancy is higher south of the border than in Canada. Canada has already surpassed the U.S. and administered more COVID-19 vaccine doses per capita, according to Our World in Data. On May 5, Canada reported a rate of 0.66 per 100 people, surpassing the U.S. at 0.64 per 100 people for the first time. And the gap has only continued to widen since then. Meanwhile, cases of COVID-19 have tripled over the past three weeks in the U.S., and hospitalizations and deaths are rising among unvaccinated people.

Some experts warn that the U.S. coronavirus infections may affect the border opening and say it should also be a cause of concern for Canadians even if they are fully vaccinated wanting to travel down south this summer. It makes Canadian travel difficult with some states, Raywat Deonandan, an epidemiologist at the University of Ottawa, told Global News on Wednesday. It is advisable for Canadians going to American states that have grown in the Delta variant, in particular, to self-quarantine when they come back, seek out a negative test or to not go in the first place.
