Are you one of those gross guys who barely cooks and relies mainly on prepackaged foods and takeout?

https://wtop.com/health-fitness/2021/06/three-bs-that-can-help-support-men-enjoying-longer-lives/

A Northern Virginia doctor has advice for men that he hopes will help them live longer.

June is Mens Health Month and Dr. Jason Singh, of Kaiser Permanente in Manassas, wants to raise awareness about the need for men to take care of themselves and see their doctors.

When we stratify the top 10 leading causes of death by sex, men lead in nearly every one of those categories nine out of 10. Furthermore, these conditions are manageable and by and large preventable, Singh said.

Despite men being more likely to get sick from serious health problems than women, Singh said only 40% of them go to the doctor when they fear they have a serious medical condition.

I always tell the guys, Listen, if there are three numbers you need to commit to memory, its your cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure because these are risk factors to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in men, Singh said. Then closely behind is cancer, and thats why regular checkups are so important and to be aware of the screening timelines for colon cancer and prostate cancer, which affects one in six men.

As an internal medicine doctor, Singh stresses the importance of prevention, one big part of which is diet.

Just remember the three Bs, he said. Berries, beans, and broccoli because these foods are particularly rich in fiber and that promotes good gut health, which lowers the risk of colon cancer.

Singh said he is concerned about how isolation associated with the pandemic and with retirement might be affecting mens mental health.

Even before this, mens suicide rates were four times higher than womens. So, theres this exacerbated risk from isolation and loneliness, which has been linked to development of dementia and unhealthy behaviors and even premature death, he said.

Men need to talk about their mental health and know that its OK to share emotions and ask for help.

If you dont talk about it, its becoming internalized and then your body talks to me about it which then translates to high blood pressure and poor sleep and muscle soreness and fatigue. These can then turn to potential behaviors that may exacerbate the problem, such as physical inactivity, poor diet and substance abuse, Singh said.

We really need to reframe the model of masculinity here.

Does CE see this as mostly good or bad?

https://depauliaonline.com/54202/nation/religion-falters-as-more-americans-reject-traditional-institutions/

A recent Gallup poll found that the percentage of Americans with a membership at a house of worship fell under 50 percent for the first time in 80 years.

As a whole, religions influence in the nation has been declining the past several years.

There are several theories as to why religions grip on society is slipping.

Theres the general rise of secularism, which is to say the recognition of non-adherence to religion as a viable option, said Scott Paeth, a DePaul religious studies professor. [Additionally, there] is the general decline in institutional life generally. Religion, insofar as it is housed within institutional forms like churches, synagogues, mosques or temples, is experiencing the same decline as all other institutions as civil society collapses and people become more isolated and insular.

He also said that he sees the decline in religious participation being partly due to the sexual abuse crisis within the Catholic church and, more recently, the backing of former President Donald Trump by a large population of evangelical Christians.

The decline is so bad that Republicans are freaking out. They have no idea what to do about it:

https://www.npr.org/2021/06/04/1002841048/how-is-the-gop-adjusting-to-a-less-religious-america

The key bloc of white evangelicals is shrinking.

This makes religion one key part of a looming, long-term demographic challenge for Republicans, says Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster.

"Republicans clearly have a stronger hold among the religiously affiliated, especially evangelical Protestants. And consequently, any decline in evangelical Protestant affiliation is not good news for the GOP," he said.

Not until its cheaper. Cuz everyone says it is. But its still like double for anything like that at the grocery store
@Darkprince49

Plant meat prices have gone down, whereas animal meat prices have gone up.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/06/08/plant-based-proteins-pricing/

Plant-based meat was having a moment before the pandemic, nabbing celebrity investors, record-setting IPOs, Whopper fast-food deals and high-end chefs who transformed pea protein and soy into savory, expectation-defying deliciousness.

Then the pandemic hit, restaurants closed, and many Americans were stuck at home battling anxiety and sourdough starters. Industry experts wondered whether enthusiasm for this new food category would falter and sales flag would plant-based meat turn out to be a fad rather than a movement? It fleetingly looked grim: Last April, plant-based protein shipments to restaurants fell 27 percent, according to market research firm NPD Group.

However, it appears that those worries were ill-founded. Alt-meat has emerged stronger than ever, much of it because of one thing: price.

Myriad pandemic pressures upended the pricing formulas for both traditional meat and plant-based proteins, making alt-meat a more competitive choice at the grocery store, far more quickly than any expert could have predicted.

It used to be that plant-based proteins generated a ton of hype and heady righteousness for health-oriented and environmentally focused consumers, yet a pound of ground Impossible Burger was still way more than double that of even the fanciest ground beef making this new generation of faux meat a reach for the cost-conscious cook.

Supply-chain problems and virus outbreaks in meat-processing plants have led to meat price increases that far outstrip those of groceries overall. Meanwhile, its getting easier and less expensive for companies to create a lot more of these plant-based proteins, bringing down the costs of the soy and pea-protein meats, dairy and eggs much faster than anticipated.

A pound of ground Beyond Meat is down to about $5.70. Beef prices, up 3.3 percent from a year ago, mean ground beef can cost between $4.10 and $6, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Impossible Foods has cut its restaurant prices twice in the past year, and in February, the company cut retail prices by 20 percent, bringing the price of two quarter-pound patties down to $5.49.

We plan to keep lowering prices as we achieve new production records and economies of scale and ultimately undercut the price of ground beef from cows, said Impossible Foods President Dennis Woodside in an email.

https://www.agriculture.com/cargill-ceo-says-plant-based-will-cannibalize-protein-business

Cargill CEO Dave MacLennan has said that his company is preparing for a big shake-up in its business over the next few years, as consumer demand for the new generation of plant-based protein products eats into market share for meat from slaughtered animals.

Our analysis is that in [] three to four years, plant-based will be perhaps 10% of the market, he said at a conference held by the US National Grain & Feed Association. Were a large beef producer and that is a big part of our portfolio. So theres some cannibalization that will occur, Reuters reported him as saying.

Cargill has been trying to increase its footprint in the plant-based protein space of late, anticipating the consumer shift away from animal protein. The US agribusiness giant is a key supplier of pea protein to plant-based patty maker Beyond Meat through a joint venture with Puris Foods, and recently earmarked $475 million to expand its US soybean crushing capability.

Cargill has also launched its own range of plant-based meat alternatives in China. Its PlantEver retail brand is available to consumers following a trial period with enterprise customers including fast food chain KFC in the country last year.

Plant-based foods just keep on rising and rising in popularity.

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/nearly-1-5-young-adults-say-they-re-not-straight-n1270003

An increasing number of young adults identify as nonheterosexual and noncisgender, according to a new global survey from Ipsos.

The results, released Wednesday, are based on internet surveys of more than 19,000 people in 27 countries ages 16 or 18 (depending on the country) to 74. The surveys were conducted in the languages of each country.

Respondents in Generation Z, which includes people born after 1997, were nearly four times as likely than those over 40 (4 percent compared to 1 percent) to identify as transgender, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, gender-fluid or "in another way."

They were also the age group most likely to identify as something other than heterosexual. Overall, 9 percent of respondents identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual or asexual; for Generation Z, the figure doubles to 18 percent.

Previous surveys of young Americans have pointed to this phenomenon: In a Gallup poll last year, 5.6 percent of U.S. respondents overall identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, while 16 percent of those in Generation Z reported being LGBTQ.

"The patterns that we see in the U.S. are definitely not unique to the U.S.," Nicolas Boyon, senior vice president of public affairs at Ipsos, said of the higher rate of gender and sexual fluidity among Gen Z. "It's a global phenomenon."
