That's pretty concerning, it's a small sample size, but that lines up with the current vaccination rate of the UK (source was Public Health England so I assume that's where those numbers came from). This basically suggests that the vaccine doesn't provide much effect against the variant (again this is a very small sample size)

The vaccine works, so of course right on cue another variant magically appears so they can try to have another lockdown.

The downside of vaccines (and antibiotics) is that it selects for resistant mutants to become the dominant strain. Yearly injections will become a necessity, just like the flu shot.

i was told from my government this was safe and perfectly reliable who could have ever seen this coming

That's because the vaccine isn't approved in the United States, did you read the article?

Canada is about a week away from surpassing Israel in terms of 1st doses.

Only 6% with the second dose, though that pace has quicken and will likely spike once we run out of eager people to get their first (possibly in 2-3 weeks or around 70% of the total population)

It's unlikely for the US to have a bad summer. 41% of the population is now fully vaccinated with another 10% waiting to get a second dose. Add in that over 10% of the population is confirmed to have gotten covid naturally (and many more probably got it and didn't test for it) and it's clear there just aren't the numbers to reach the same heights as last year.

Of course there will be local flare-ups as the distribution of vaccinated/already infected isn't even.

Isnt Japan doing a terrible job with vaccinations too?

Yup.

Considering the average vaccination rate of the countries set to have the most athletes at the Olympics and the fact the IOC is giving vaccines to athletes prior to the Olympics we could have the situation where it's the Japanese public who may be too dangerous for the athletes and not the other way around.

Canada has crossed the 50% of the total population with its first shot mark. Within the next two weeks we should be pushing 60%. At that point, I hope we start switching to give people their second dose.

so what happens when we do get that roughly 40% administered with a second dose and we run out of people who actually want the vaccine at all? We just sit around 40-50% and call it a day?

Outside of a law forcing people to get the vaccine our max rate will likely be around 60-70%. After that we may have to do yearly shots if the variants end up mutating too much.

Canada had a slow start, but we are making good ground, we should cross 40% of the population with at least one dose around tomorrow. However we are only at around 3% with the second dose though by the end of the month we will likely start focusing on getting the second dose out (mostly because we will begin to struggle to find people excited to get the first dose).

It's more likely there will be a yearly coronavirus vaccine, similar to the flu shot than for us to fully eradicate it.

Perhaps it won't be every year, it depends how quickly the virus mutates/how long we remain immune.

What about the fact that we need 80%~ for herd immunity and the last poll i saw shows roughly 50% of Canadians dont want the vaccine...

According to this poll the ~50% is for people wanting to take the vaccine right away. ~30% more are going to take it eventually so that'll get us to 80%.

https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/more-canadians-than-ever-willing-to-receive-the-covid-19-vaccine-angus-reid-poll-1.5230633

Not sure what you want the government to do other than rounding up anti-vaxers and forcing them to get the vaccine.

I wonder what Trudeau has been doing the last 12 months in order to secure enough vaccine

Buying enough vaccines to potentially vaccinate the entire population 5-10 times over (essentially hedging their bets to make sure they have enough even if a bunch of vaccines flop).

We also have contract deadlines for Pfizer and Moderna for end of March, June and September, at which point there will be enough for everyone even if nothing else gets approved (assuming they honor the contract). From the looks of it instead of sending us a steady stream of vaccines they are going to dump everything over the next six weeks.
