Thoroughbreds (2017)

this was the first time i saw Anya-Taylor Joy in anything and she was great, as was Olivia Cooke. i laughed out loud several times during this and it's all moments involving her character, which isn't really surprising given the other characters. probably the biggest laugh out of me was when the stepdad asks Amanda what her mom is busy with and she says "Chemotherapy" and he just walks off. it was a familiar laugh like i felt i've seen that situation or a similar situation before but it just got me. The dialogue between the two girls when they're talking to a third party (stepdad, Tim) is really entertaining how Amanda just follows up with a quip and they're kind of in a rhythm and i can buy that they were previous best friends who are falling back to their groove. again, it's a familiar-feeling setup but still enjoyable.

there's a lot of moments where the camera just shfits focus. unsure about whether it was intentional or some technical thing i'm unfamiliar with but it felt a lot more noticeable here than other films/videos. the first time is within like three minutes of the opening where Amanda is looking out into the backyard(?) and the worker/pool cleaner(?) walks by.

i think the line that stood out to me the most was after the chess scene and they had just talked about Amanda killing the horse and Lily brings up the plan for the stepdad again. Amanda says, "Are you looking at me?" (?) and Lily responds with "Only because you're the only person here." Like she sees Amanda as a pawn to get what she wants and in the end, Amanda is fine with that. I love the shot of her in the end where she is looking at the picture of their younger selves and the horses. Previously, she had been looking into mirrors and practicing smiling and here we see her first "real" smile.

SwiftyDC posted...
Not sure what that ending was about but at least write her back saying THANK YOU! Lily's stepdad was totally right about her, treating people like they're her maids in life.

yeah it's so fitting that the few scenes we see the stepdad, one of them is him chewing her out for smoking in the house and snapping at the mom for fussing after he's super irritated following an injury. like that's what justifies her reason for murder in her limited, spoiled teenage worldview.

but i don't know if i believe Lily when she says she just "threw it away." like throughout the film she's shown lying or being dishonest ("tutoring," college admission plagiarism, the party, etc.) and Amanda breaks through to her a bit in the beginning confronting her about it, and in the end, Lily breaks and comes clean about actually killing her stepdad and framing her for it. probably that moment of what she saw as pure honesty combined with the realization of "living a meaningless life" pushed her into "well i might as well be of use to her" territory. but after Lily kills the stepdad, she places herself in Amanda's arms. she's obviously shaken up and wants to feel any amount of safety/comfort. was she fine with using Amanda for that as well because "she was the only one there" as she said before? maybe. but Amanda was also like the only person she was honest with and I can see her just lying to Tim because you're not "supposed" to be in contact with an old friend who murdered your stepdad. most people would not want anything more to do with someone if they did that. But in Lily's case, Amanda actually didn't do that and i thought it was ambiguous whether Lily viewed Amanda as really just a pawn or something more.

overall, i liked it. 7-maybe-8/10 for me.

ok so i don't really care about AR since the draw of the game for me is collecting heroes but the last goal for lv. 15 of the heroic path or whatever it's called is to reach T15

are there any easy-to-set-up units that I can just throw together for a Defense team at that range? i know T15 is not that high relatively speaking but I hate learning new modes so if there's some bullshit i can just abuse to help me out here i'll do it lol

i hate the thought of being an inconvenience to people almost more than anything else tbh

and while inconvenience is an understatement for this specific situation, the mindset just extends to everything else

like when i was 16 or something i was hanging out with some friends and just fucking around with his scooter outside. and eventually we decided to go over to another guy's house. and i somehow forgot about the scooter and left it outside like a fucking idiot. like hours later when i realized, i ran for like 20 minutes back to the place and it was gone. so i went home at that point and just cut up my arm with one of those paper cutting blades before going back to where my friends were to tell him how much i fucked up. like obviously it's not the scooter itself that was the big deal for me but the fact that i made like the stupidest preventable mistake.

oh wait there was apparently a deleted scene about that

from imdb trivia:
In a deleted scene, Ray and Ken are lying in their beds discussing Ray's murder of the priest and the little boy. Ray ponders over why he was sent to kill the priest, guessing it was likely pedophilia. Ken counters that Harry was behind a land-buying deal that the priest opposed. These two explanations are coincidentally two different motives that are suggested for the archbishop's murder in Primal Fear (1996).

yeah i saw an interview or something about this at one point and they mention this and how Bruges is like a heaven for Ken while it's a hell for Ray

Camden posted...
Also, with no explanation for why he was killed outside of guesses based on what some of his brethren have been up to over the years in real life, I kind of felt bad for that priest. Ray is suicidal over killing the child but the seemingly innocent priest is just another day at the office?

it was his job so it really was "another day at the office" lol

i presume he'd put to rest any qualms he had about killing potentially innocent people if it was his job when he decided on that line of work

considering the only information we were shown that could be related to that is Harry's strict "code" concerning kids, I would just assume that that had something to do with the reason for the hit on the priest.

note about the "watchrate requirement for recommending movies"

i said "subject to change" from the beginning and i did change it like a week ago in the spreadsheet but i guess i never mentioned it in the topic so here it is: You must maintain a 50% watchrate to recommend movies when it is your turn.

reason there's a watchrate requirement in the first place is simply because i think it's more fair to have more active members get to recommend. i said 60% initially because i was thinking further down the line when we had a bigger list of movies but there's a lot of awkward percentages in the beginning so i lowered it to 50% at least for now.

there's a "Stats" page in the spreadsheet where i have watchrate percentages. if you mention you watched a movie during nominations or in any other post, i mark it as watched for you. you do not have to give ratings for it to count. you do not have to rewatch a movie during the week it's recommended to count if you have already seen it (obviously welcome to though). you can have a 0% watchrate, and then say you watched a bunch of the movies the day before your turn to recommend and that's fine too. and again, this is only for recommending movies during your turn (order in spreadsheet). like if you're 10th in the order, that's ten weeks to watch five movies assuming you haven't seen any of the 10 before.

so obvious follow-up question. What's the unfunniest (though at least somewhat intended to be) movie you've ever seen?

Is your problem more with pure comedy movies that just aren't that funny, or with movies that aren't just comedies having things other than jokes?
i don't know if i would call it a "problem" but i think it's more like "i expected to physically laugh more but didn't and ended up confused about my experience with comedies and laughter". Going into In Bruges with the mindset of "i remember this was supposed to be funny" was so inexplicably distracting because the whole time I'm thinking "that line was funny" or "that was clearly intended to be funny but i didn't find it funny" and shit like that. i don't know why i got so hung up on this but idk i guess i just wanted to laugh?

to clear up, there are still movies classified as "comedies" (Monty Python, Princess Bride, etc.) that i think are great, have humorous moments, but i wouldn't say are "consistently funny." i guess i'm equating that with the memory of me laughing or something. i kind of feel like some fucking weird alien who is trying to learn how to understand what the concept of "funny" is. because i would see moments like "oh that was amusing" or like a minor "heh" but not actually laugh and then think "would i describe this as 'funny'" the way i think of the word?

like I KNOW this might sound weird lol but whatever

and looking through stuff i've seen, i'd say my answer for "consistently funny" would be Big Lebowski, Burn After Reading and Black Dynamite. maybe Hot Fuzz. and i haven't seen Shaun of the Dead in ages. i do like Mean Girls and Clueless but i don't think they're the "consistently funny" i was thinking of. i know it's super popular but i'm pretty lukewarm on Scott Pilgrim honestly lol

a little surprised Emperor's New Groove got two mentions actually. i don't remember much about it and i saw it for the first time only like five years ago
