Raka_Putra 12/29/20 3:07:52 AM #13 | 4. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 44 points Kimetsu no Yaiba's explosive popularity is unprecedented. Boosted by its highly-acclaimed anime, the manga's backlog is filling up best-selling manga lists in Japan, selling millions and millions of copies. The hype "train" isn't likely to be stopping soon, as its recent movie broke Japan's box office records. It's about Tanjiro Kamado, a teenager who had to take up the sword after a bunch of demons attacked his family. He then looks for a way to free his sister, Nezuko, from being possessed by a demon, with his comrades Zenitsu, Inosuke, and a bunch of other swordsmen. 3. Haikyuu 49 points This volley ball manga was the latest WSJ sports manga that hit it big. The last volume was released just a few weeks ago, with epilogue chapters that tell of the character's lives after the series. I haven't actually read it since I'm not big on sports but since its chapters are now being released for free weekly on the MangaPlus app, I just might give it a spin. 2. My Hero Academia 53 points One of the most well-known new shonen series of the last 10 years, it tells the story of a bunch of teenagers studying how to be a superhero, with consistently great art. It is also very accessible, being on Netflix and all. MHA's popularity led to many fan content, including fan art, comics, and even those rap battles on YouTube. 1. One Piece 63 points One Piece is perhaps the quintessential shonen series. It's got adventure, fights, crazy powers, a colorful cast of characters, and hot-blooded emotions. It is currently the longest-running manga on WSJ and just about to hit the 1000th chapter on the next issue early next year! Wow! With author Eichiro Oda's vague statements that the series is about halfway done, seems like we can still expect more seafaring adventures of Luffy and co. for years to come. --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Raka_Putra 12/28/20 3:49:15 PM #7 | Oh, well, if it's just the logical reasoning...then I think DR2 and DRV3 are both better in that regard... And the characters actually try to be helpful in trials, something that the DR1 cast seems allergic to. So you might like them better. I'd say go for DR2 and just watch an LP for the remaining DR1 trials if you must, though personally I think the final cases are worth it for the spectacle. --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Raka_Putra 12/28/20 8:22:08 AM #12 | 6. The Promised Neverland 35 points Grace Field House seems like an idyllic orphanage, with its warm beds, plentiful food, cheerful kids, and, at the center of it all, the loving caretaker the children call Mama. However, all is not as it seems as protagonist Emma finds out that it's actually a facility to ship children off as food for the demons that run the world. Known for its amazing first arc that's heavy with mystery and intrigue, TPN is a successful series even with the less-popular later arcs, recently getting an anime and a live action movie. Although the manga has ended this year, side-stories are still being published, highlighting the stories of its side characters. 5. Chainsaw Man 40 points Denji was a homeless young man with seemingly no future, until he met a weird...dog...thingy called Pochita, who gave him the power to transform into Chainsaw Man, with chainsaws in place of his arms and head. It's surprisingly violent and suggestive for a WSJ series, but its sense of style and atypical writing really caught the heart of manga fans everywhere. It has finished its run in WSJ and will continue in the Shonen Jump+ app. An anime series was also announced, with studio MAPPA at the helm, who also made the Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan anime. --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Raka_Putra 12/28/20 8:12:27 AM #10 | 10. Undead Unluck 14 points "Sick! Wicked sick!" This recent fighting manga started a bit slow, frequently placing low on the ToC. But as its unique worldbuilding is expanded upon and its colorful cast of characters get the time they need, it has become one of the stronger newbies, with solid rankings and sells. UU revolves around people with unique abilities called 'negators', who can negate certain concepts. For example, the titular Undead and Unluck are Andy and Fuuko, who respectively has the power to negate his own death and negate other people's luck (even bringing calamities like having a plane or a meteor fall on them). These unconventional powers make the fight scenes fresh and unique - Andy's go-to move is, in fact, shooting off his own finger tips or other extremities as projectiles, since he can just regenerate them! 9. Act-Age 16 points The world of acting is not one often explored in manga, much less in a shonen manga. Yet Act-Age proved that it can be successful. Kei Yonagi is a normal student who went into acting to earn money as she was the breadwinner for her siblings, but soon she fell in love with the art form itself. Act-Age was shaping up to be a big phenomenon, earning a live stage adaptation and being pushed to the forefront on promotions. Sadly, its life was cut short when the writer (but not the artist) was arrested for molesting teenagers. 8. Jujutsu Kaisen 27 points Yuji Itadori was a normal high-schooler who got thrown into the world of curses and demons when he accidentally ate the finger of the legendary curse, Sukuna. Unexpectedly, rather than dying, he could channel the tremendous power of Sukuna to fight other curses. Earlier this year, Jujutsu Kaisen got a highly successful anime adaptation that launched its sales to crazy heights. The future seems bright for this demon-fighting series. 7. Dr. Stone 33 points A mysterious light engulfed the Earth and turned all its inhabitants to stone. Thousands of years later, a genius called Senku woke up, who avoided losing his consciousness by counting each passing second. Using the power of SCIENCE, he sets off to restore civilization and unveil the truth behind the incident, with the help of friends he restored from petrification as well as the remnants of humanity. Dr. Stone sets itself apart with its focus on science to solve problems. It's quite amazing seeing how Senku and co. made use of natural resources to recreate modern inventions like radar, the radio, motorcycles, and more. --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Raka_Putra 12/27/20 8:00:21 AM #8 | 14. Magu-chan: God of Destruction 5 points The story of God of Destruction, Magu Menueku, who finally broke out of his seal at a small Japanese seaside town, only to find himself powerless and adorable. The manga has built up a steady cast of characters as well as a gaggle of loyal fans due to its comfy humor and sometimes touching moments. 13. Dr. Stone Reboot: Byakuya (tie) 8 points This prequel to Dr. Stone tells the story of Byakuya Ishigami, Senku's father, who landed on Earth only to find that everyone has mysteriously turned into stone. He, alongside a crew of multinational astronauts, has to try and build a new civilization. However, danger doesn't only come from the new, strange world, but also from inside... 13. We Never Learn (tie) 8 points This harem rom-com series just recently ended after giving each of its five heroines their own ending arcs. As it's about a male tutor hired to teach badly performing female students, it often drew comparison to Quintessential Quintuplets. Personally, I find WNL to be a lighter read, never reaching QQ's highs but an enjoyable manga just the same. Also, 12. Agravity Boys 9 points A rare sci-fi series, Agravity Boys is a comedy series about four young men stranded on the planet of Alpha-Jumbo. Nonsensical hilarity ensues. It seemingly miraculously evaded cancellations after cancellations although scoring low on the table of content week after week, due to fortuitous timing with long-running series ending. However, its time run out as it was announced today that the series will end on the next issue, with an epilogue chapter to be published in Jump GIGA. 11. Me and Roboco 10 points Another gag series, this time it's about a young boy named Bondo who wanted his own Order Maid (robot maid), only to find the muscular and goofy Roboco at his doorsteps. It drew a lot of inspiration from Doraemon while subverting many of its tropes like the "childhood bullies" who are actually wholesome. It also famously makes a lot of references to other Jump series, both on-going and finished. --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Into the woods, but mind the future! |

Raka_Putra 12/27/20 7:37:21 AM #4 | 16. Mashle 2 points This action-gag series earned 1 point each for its magic and its muscle! I just marathoned it today and wow the Harry Potter references are so blatant...I love it. Mash' deadpan expression is funny, but it might hold him back from more emotional (and thus, memorable) moments. It seems to be doing really well for its own though, sales-wise! It might just become a WSJ pillar in a couple years. 15. Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin (tie) 3 points Beelzebub's Ryuhei Tamura returns with a new buddy comedy series featuring a shark-like and a literally-dolphin-headed cop duo. I'm not actually following this series, but from a few chapters that I peeked at, it seems to vary between wild comedy hijinks and serious underwater cult/cartel mystery series. Time will tell if it'll swing further one way. 15. Mission: Yozakura Family (tie) 3 points This manga about a young man betrothed to the heiress of an assassin family started life as a comedy-action series with heavy emphasis on episodic comedy, frequently featuring one of the many colorful members of the eponymous family. Recently it showed more of its serious, action-packed side, and earned better ratings. It seems to be geared up for a long arc full of action, so it's not a bad time to start reading it! --- Into the woods, but mind the past... Into the woods, but mind the future! |

With Viz and Mangaplus letting readers access the newest chapters of Weekly Shonen Jump for free, I started reading it a few months ago and now it's something I look forward to every week. 2020 has been a turbulent year for the publication, with many big hitters ending, some seemingly out of the blue, while others reached their natural ending. Thanks for voting your favorite series! We have a total of nine voters this year, with two series impressively getting eight votes. But first, the ones who didn't get any vote: Beast Children Black Clover - Quite surprising, as it is one of the longest running manga at the time, but it seems like it's one of those works that most everyone kinda like but is nobody's favorite Bone Collection Build King Burn the Witch - The first season of Tite Kubo's return did not get any votes Guardian of the Witch High School Family Mitama Security Moriking Our Blood Oath Phantom Seer Sakamoto Days Samurai 8 - Kishimoto's new series was a flop in all regards and it's the same on B8 Time Paradox Ghostwriter - Whoops, even time traveling microwave and robot can't save this series Tokyo Shinobi Squad Zipman!! --- Into the woods, but mind the past...
