Rental properties only exist if there's a demand for them. If there were a high demand for more affordable housing that a developer could turn a profit in building then they would build those houses.

Rental markets are driven more by people who don't want to own than people who can't afford to own. Which is fine. Owning is a really big liability that ties you down. There's nothing wrong with not wanting that. But those people have to live somewhere so they're gonna rent. And people will provide them somewhere to rent of they can make a profit doing so.

Renting isn't a bad deal. Yeah you pay a slight premium but you aren't paying property taxes. You aren't paying for water/sewage/trash in many cases. And you aren't responsible for repairs.

Theres *always* a demand for rental properties though. Housing is inelastic. People need places to live, and to the extent to which theyre able to do so, they will pay more because its not really negotiable. And renters *are* responsible for the condition of the rental property, thats why security deposits exist. Its true that landlords will provide housing if they are able to turn a profit from it, but the issue lies within the fact that they are raising the cost of living simply by their presence requiring a profit, and they obviously have incentive to maximize profit wherever they can. Also, as a renter I can assure you that most renters are still paying for water, trash, and other utilities. Sometimes the various payments are consolidated into one larger payment and marketed as utilities included, but youre still paying for it. You are correct in saying that the flexibility of renting and the lack of property taxes are obvious benefits though, Ill agree with you there.

Housing is expensive because of cheap credit from banks which increases demand, not landlords buying up all the properties.

As with everything there's a yin and a yang. If you made credit more expensive housing would be cheaper, but it'd also be harder to get a loan and you would pay more interest on the money you borrow. If loans are cheaper and accessible to more people than it will drive up demand and prices.

I understand that, but the type of landlord I described does exist. The cost of housing is raised by the presence of such landlords because they're middlemen and they need a share of their own. For this reason, the more properties become rentals, and the less purchasable homes are available on the market, the more the cost of housing has arbitrarily risen because now theres an unnecessary third party who takes an additional cut of the money. And god forbid you live somewhere where wealthy people have a vested interest in being, like a college town, because the presence of wealthy people will also arbitrarily raise rent and price out those who cant afford it, who are often times the same people who are directly involved with and contributing to the local economy.

I think the real problem are the sort of landlords who buy up dozens of properties in a systematic fashion, eliminating the opportunity for homeownership in a given community and arbitrarily raising the cost of housing. Ive had landlords who were just people who owned a house and then wanted to move elsewhere, but wanted to eventually return to the area so they keep the house and rent it out so it isnt just sitting vacant. Thats hardly the issue

Replayed Forza Horizon recently - probably an 8.5/10?

Its a good racing game with very solid driving physics. I enjoy the open world presentation of it. The single player feels like mostly a trial run for the multiplayer so I suppose the game is a little limited now that its been out for 8 years and there probably isnt much of a community left. The cars available are great. One complaint I have is that there are really only a small handful of R2 and R1 class races which kinda defeat the purpose of having those cars outside of multiplayer.

Yeah I think its a factor. The older I get I see more of my parents in myself. I think most people do. Luckily Im on great terms with my parents and realize they did their best in spite of many hindrances that come with being young parents so its something I take with pride. I feel that a lot of GenXers were also pretty nihilistic/complacent too but not out of ignorance, more so out of pragmatism or something. I feel some anxiety about feeling that way at times too, like knowing Im overmatched by the negative aspects of the world at large

I mean people in their early-early 20's.

We will see how the kids nowadays come out. At least most have GenX parents, which isn't such a bad thing. Most of my friends kids are pretty well centered for their ages.

Ah I see- I think Ive turned out well overall, I feel that Im pretty stoic and skeptical of what Im told by those who have an interest in swaying my opinion so thats better than a lot of 9/11-ites. My parents are GenX too, they were pretty young when I was born. Most people I know in my age group have parents who are around a decade older than my own. I fall into a sort of grey area between millennial and gen z as far as disposition goes I think. Its a good reminder to never let the quantified generation thing get to your head too much

I wouldnt say it was super shitty. Kids right now are probably being much more traumatized than I was from all of that. I think that 9/11 made a lot of people lean into patriotism really hard and it didnt really have that effect on me

i dont believe in the idea of ghosts literally being the spirits of dead people. I do think that sometimes things happen that just cant be explained though. Whether theyre actually real or just within the mind of the observer is entirely up for interpretation most of the time

Ghosts aren't visible to the human eye when you are fully awake. You have to be transitioning to sleep or be asleep to see a ghost.

i believe youre thinking of sleep paralysis which is definitely just a trick of the mind rather than an external stimuli. I get this sometimes if I sleep on my back. A lot of times Ill see a large spider crawling on the wall or something and then itll slowly fade away and then Im fully awake and able to move around
