In the 80's and early 90's he was truck driver and it took him all over the country and made him interact with different people. He told me that was when he started to understand that the views he had held most of his life had were wrong and he had gained an understanding that he'd wished he had earlier. He grew up in Mississippi on a farm during the 20s. Joined the Marines and fought in pacific. So he had a rather narrow view of African Americans and Japanese people. He got a lot better as he got older though, though to the day he died he still referred to black people as "colored".
