Yes, and also how the chain got its name in the first place.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
I'd also be curious to know how similar places like Friendly's, Fridays, and Applebees are weathering things. I always sort of lump all those places together in my head (occasionally throwing places like Uno's into the mix).

Friendly's has been having issues for years. The company declared bankruptcy in 2011, then closed 9 locations in CT in 2012, and then just another 3 locations last year (as part of a larger closing of 23 locations in the Northeast).

https://patch.com/connecticut/danbury/friendlys-close-danbury-restaurant

https://www.newstimes.com/business/article/Friendly-s-to-close-Danbury-shop-2-more-on-I-84-13750851.php

And I didn't realize that Friendly's was a regional chain, given that it's apparently in most of the states where I've lived over the years. (And the News-Time article lists CT as having 17 locations, but I'm not sure how accurate that is and I'm wondering if which was likely the previous number before all the closures began. )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly%27s

The history has been surprisingly fascinating. However, I'm not really seeing news for any of those this year despite the assumption that they must be struggling in the midst of these current economic conditions.

(And, not for nothing, but I've always loved Friendly's.)

It's basically like an Applebee's, there's a variety of stuff. Come to think of it, they've got a salad bar so maybe it's not that much like an Applebee's. I can't really think of any fast casual dining places that still do salad bars besides them. Maybe Sizzler? Although apparently Sizzler filed for bankruptcy last month.

I know that your alt has a far-left troll gimmick going on, but this clearly isn't the same thing as just "allowing" drivers to run over protesters. They would still need to demonstrate that they're fleeing danger. It's not carte blanche to run over protesters and it very specifically isn't about "peaceful protesters" unless you're facetiously calling them peaceful protesters as a means of mocking the idea of peaceful protest.

Ooh, cool, in Florida terrorism is legal. Great.

Considering that laws like these limit an angry mob's ability to inflict terror and damage, the opposite seems true. If somebody is being attacked while in a vehicle, they now have some measure of legal protection while trying to escape that violence. The one major problem is that it's just a band-aid and doesn't address the fact that the police have done little to stop mobs from engaging in bad behaviors in the first place.

It also makes little sense to donate to orgs to limit who can adopt when so many kids need homes, and are stuck as wards of the state.

Foster homes are a thing. It's not like they're all just in giant kid prison camps or anything. Plus, as a general rule, most people looking to adopt want to adopt either babies or very young children who have no problem being placed. It's generally the older kids that are more likely to have problems finding permanent homes and get stuck in the system as a result.

And that's excluding the wards of the state that are taken from their biological parents where there may be logistical issues making adoption difficult.

On the subject, my cousin -- for whatever fucking reason -- wants to adopt. However, as I pointed out to him, he's a single male -- there's no way anybody would let him adopt. The adoption system has an almost-universal scorn for single males. And up until maybe the 1970s, it was just straight-up illegal for single people to adopt in most states and even now it's far harder for a single male to adopt than any other demographic.

How can something else be at the bottom too?

McDonald's hardly has the worst chicken, or fast food in general. And the biggest reason it attracts the criticism it does is because it's the largest fast food chain in its niche (technically Subway has more locations but, other than its history of hiring sex offenders to represent the company, it doesn't seem to attract much criticism for whatever reason -- and honestly, it's probably the worst of the major sandwich chains)

The biggest chains are rarely the worst chains overall because, if they really sucked, they wouldn't be able to get big in the first place. (And some smaller chains aren't so much hindered by quality as they might just lack exposure or good business practices. And, of course, a lot of mom&pop fast food places have owners who lack the business sense to create any kind of a successful chain.)

I usually don't go into or comment in topics about stuff I'm not all that familiar with though, so I acknowledge I can easily come across as a know-it-all.

For castles, about the only thing I know is that the fiddly bits at top are called crenelations (as mentioned in a recent topic!), and the incredibly esoteric fact that most spiral staircases in Europe tend to go counter-clockwise upwards (which I mostly just use to figure out how to build staircases in Minecraft), because it forces attackers trying to storm a tower to keep their sword-arm towards the central column, which makes it harder for them to fight against defenders above.

Oh, and I know about a little bit Mad King Ludwig's castles because my family (well, part of it) actually comes from Bavaria, so it kind of feels like I'm obligated to know about them.

Otherwise, it's not really a subject that's ever really interested me all that much, so I never really looked into it.

It's a surprise mostly because I thought you were a large fan of the fantasy genre, which can be pretty castle-heavy (in addition to my impression that you were something of a history buff). It's not so much the all-knowing PO aspect as it is that I just assumed it would be in your wheelhouse.

Ill care about Bidens son when yall care about the sitting President. Im tired of Republican gaslighting first issues they do not care about like the sanctity of human life, the second amendment, or foreign influence and corruption.

>Politician's son gets high-paying jobs from companies closely aligned with governments to buy access to a sitting politician and, while in that position, the politician acts to the benefits of those countries
>"But his tax returns!"

If Eric or Donald Trump was being paid a large sum of work for a company closely tied to a foreign nation where Trump was giving preferential treatment to that nation, your last concern would be "tax returns." You're basically suggesting that a fishing expedition is more important than something where you already have a very visible conflict that demonstrates the highly for-profit nature of politics where politicians' families enter the political arena from working class backgrounds but manage to tremendously enrich themselves through their office or benefits associated thereof.

Entity13 posted...
I do band them together as a potential issue regarding Hunter's finances, as examples of the one issue.

Imagine being sick, and the symptoms occur multiple times over the course of a few days. Do you call each symptom, each occurrence, or even each day, a separate issue, or do you classify them as part of a larger whole - the illness?

Assuming the validity of this report, these are accounts or examples of a single, corrupt behavior. By this token, it becomes difficult to ascertain if Trump's tax records and his foreign affairs are singular or separate, for example. We do not have enough information because said records are kept from the public eye despite court rulings on this. Hunter, on the other hand, is presumed by one side to have received money when and where he shouldn't have, while some on the left have zero interest in hearing about it since it is so peripheral to the issues we currently face, or that the right refuses to address its present golden boy who, as you say, not everything is about - clearly.

It's a silly claim justifying what you admit is a fishing expedition (ie, your assertion that Trump's tax returns are more important because you won't know what you'll find, which is literally a fishing expedition). The tradition of presidents/presidential candidates releasing tax returns goes back to the 70s and only started because somebody partially leaked Nixon's tax returns to the press at the time. And almost nowhere else in the world is this a standard practice.

More so, considering that Hunter's PRIMARY income comes from ties to these companies, it's also a far more significant factor than Trump possibly having business interests abroad considering Trump's massive empire (where his disclosures were already 92 pages long; meanwhile Bernie's full tax record was only 7 pages)

And if you're overly concerned about potential hidden conflicts, shouldn't you be advocating that everybody in a politician's family release their tax returns? You'll want to fish there, too, because oftentimes benefits are being given to relatives rather than the politician themselves (although the actual super illegal shit -- like direct bribes -- won't show on an IRS form anyway and you'd need a forensic accountant, etc, rather than John Q Public to find to find it)

Actually a courtyard usually means a wall that is a secondary line of defense besides the castle itself, it allows you to have more people in defensive positions, and also to store food/water (have cows etc) inside a guarded position so you can't just be starved out as easily.

From a technical standpoint, the more defenders you have, the easier it is to starve you out (when preparing for a long siege, castles traditionally tried to reduce headcount) and I'm not sure that a few extra cows will be a major benefit since you're not going to have much grazing area to keep them fed which means you might wind up using grains and other dry goods that could instead go to feed the defenders.

In the case of a longer siege, one fewer person could extend provisions by a week or even a month.

A courtyward with solid walls surrounding the castle, and a moat around that is even better (with a drawbridge) as it prevents using many devices to try and smash through the wall, and makes scaling it more difficult as well. You can still use catapults etc though, but even if you do knock down the wall, if there is a dangerous moat, it still makes storming the castle more difficult.

Well, yeah, I mean if you had redundancies within the castle itself where the keep was like a castle unto itself, sure. I was more thinking about a keep within a castle where if the enemy could get over the walls, everything securing the outer walls would be negated and it would simply be a matter of getting into the keep. Castles with the same principle as a motte & bailey could simply have fall back to the far more secure upper region... although I guess even then there's the matter of outer walls and a keep rather than strictly just being the structure. I guess I might be overthinking this since main benefit either way would be a hill with steep walls at the end to block the enemy from trying to use ladders or siege engines.

wolfy42 posted...
If I was really going to make a castle like structure that was almost impossible to defeat, I would do it INTO a mountainside or large hill, then surround it with a couple of layers of walls for defense. Even catapults would not have any chance against that. You could even make it look like a traditional castle on the outside, but the actual living places would be underground/hill and pretty much impossible to damage.

With a mountain, you'd probably have the issue of natural tunnels potentially creating alternate entrances. Otherwise if you're just building into (instead of on top) of the mountain or hill, the structure would still be vulnerable from the exposed side.

Helm's Deep is a good example. Although the mountain protects the back of the castle, the walls can still be taken from the front as easily as any other castle. (And, on an unrelated note, the movie version of Helm's Deep had all kinds of vulnerabilities.) And the issue with catapults wasn't so much damaging the living spaces, but instead allowing attackers to breach the defenses. The point of a castle is having fortification against enemies entering, without it you're just vulnerable.

Then there'd be the potential secondary issue where catapults could trigger a rockslide. Granted, if you don't have anything important outside the tunnels and aren't impacted by having the entrance to your tunnels buried (in the short-term anyway), it can be a defensive advantage. The bigger concern would probably be enemies breaching the walls and then working their way through your underground structure.

I couldn't tell you what it is exactly, but I know it's related to castles. I've heard certain castles described as a "motte and bailey design".

Is this really PO? =x I assumed you'd have expert-level knowledge about castles.

I don't think I've ever gotten anything on sale that involves tipping in the first place, so I've never been in this situation in order to have an established pattern of behavior for it.

This. Although if I had, I'd probably pay based on the reduced amount in the case of a general sale or tip extra if it was a special discount.

When AOC and Bernie are your champions of a political party, you know that your party is doomed.

Technically they're more fringe and Bernie is only a democrat when he's running for president. Considering Bernie's history of opportunism and extreme views, mainstream Democrats and leadership don't want him in a leadership role. The party's handpicked chosen one was Kamala Harris, whose candidacy was torn to shreds by Tulsi Gabbard in mere minutes so they had to settle for making her the VP candidate knowing that Joe Biden probably won't serve out a full term.

That story was from unnamed sources, was disputed by many people (who actually came forward and went on record) including John Bolton, who has not been shy about being critical of Trump lately.
Even the Atlantic editor had to acknowledge that his unnamed sources were pretty much bogus.

tbh, the Atlantic has never been big on facts anyway. They only get in the way of their narratives.

He mentioned a litany of areas where America was falling down during all of his debates -- including the economy and getting screwed on trade -- which I thought you'd watched, but I guess maybe you hadn't if you're asking that 4 years after he announced his platforms. And, honestly, up until COVID shut down large swathes of the country, the economy and jobs growth had been consistently improving. And he's very visibly been fighting China over its countless unfair trade practices and illegal activities, something that Biden wants to reverse on day one (presumably because of Hunter Biden's business ties, since he had previously taken issue with China but now he has no interest on taking them to task over anything)

And while Trump's decision to block TikTok has been in the news, you won't hear the news discuss how China has kept American social media & other internet companies out of their country all this time which has allowed their companies to flourish. Something like Alibaba would have likely never got off the ground if ebay and Amazon had been in China. And while Trump's TikTok ban isn't even about the unfair trade practices but instead security concerns, China's motivation was to limit Western influence and keep out competition.

There was a similar bill last year which got shut down in the senate by democrats, several states already have similar legislation.
It basically states a baby who survives abortion must be given medical treatment to make sure it survives.

Kinda wondering what the justification was for blocking that.

While there's no strict "If I, then you" component, it certainly *seems* like an ethics violation that must conflict with some law. Other monetary benefits to get people to vote are already illegal, albeit poorly enforced.

https://www.politico.com/blogs/under-the-radar/2012/11/voting-related-giveaways-clash-with-federal-law-148481

The only kinda gray area is that it's not happening on election day whereas those laws more specifically target election day shenanigans.

If the fines are paid off before the voting even happens...

... And there's then no reward or incentive OR punishment for them to vote one way or another...

Then how can you claim votes are being bought?

So basically you're arguing that if somebody gave you a hundred dollars to vote for a candidate a month before an election, that should be legal? >_>

Do you suffer from selective reading? It's left-center. It's not left bias or extreme left bias. Do you understand there's almost no way to remove bias completely? It also states it is left-center because of the editorials, not the news articles. Please learn to read.

>Asks if somebody suffers from selective reading
>Reads "leftist" as "extreme left" (which could just be conflating my comments)

The point was that even the sketchy, non-authoritative guide you linked was acknowledging a clear bias I had already pointed out. The significance being that even though you had carefully chosen a bullshit reference even the bullshit reference doesn't absolve the Atlantic of bias.

Jen0125 posted...
So you admit getting your news from left leaning sources as well? While trying to call out others?

First, I don't rely on far-left sources like you do -- you cite crap like HuffPo, which fact checkers (including the one you chose) routinely rank in their farthest-left bracket, and the Atlantic.

Second, while NPR is leftist, I don't rely on it as a primary source for information since any claims I hear are vetted elsewhere (something you don't seem to do at all which is why you wind up posting really outlandish crap).

Third, even though USA Today and BBC are acknowledged as being more towards the middle (well, except by your sketchy site), I STILL vet claims against other sources.

Stop acting like you get your news from better sources.

You mean a sketchy, non-authoritative site you chose to go with (probably because the top few results didn't support your argument) is wrong?! Who would have thunk it!

However, it also circles back to my initial criticism of your low-information approach to media. And I suppose on some level it's inspiring, since it shows all I'd need to to sway the poorly-informed is create a website and buy an authoritative-sounding domain since I can count on people to not bother examining credentials, etc, to see that it's a one-man-with-volunteers operation where there's relatively little information out there about that one man. I can't even seem to find a Linkedin page, which is the barest minimum for a professional.

yeee, savin up to make a tiny shed into a tiny house

fuck the ideal home ownership shit ya know? Id rather find a plot of land like 45 minutes away from a city and live off grid sans internet lol

There are some elements to off-the-grid leaving that appeal to me, but I couldn't imagine that long of a commute. The other thing I wouldn't ever want to bother with is non-conventional plumbing. So if I'm off the grid, I'd want a well and then a septic system rather than something like a composting toilet or any of that crap.

And, as far as unconventional living goes, I think I'd prefer an earth home to a tiny home. While the mobile aspect of tiny homes are kinda neat, I like owning stuff and tiny homes tend to be minimalistic.

adjl posted...
A word of caution: Tiny homes tend not to hold their value well at all, which will likely be an issue in the future. There are plenty of stories out there of families that thought building a tiny home was a great idea and invested a sizable amount of money into doing so (less than a full home, obviously, but still not a trivial amount), only to later decide that they'd outgrown it (whether because of kids or just because they wanted something bigger) and wanted to upgrade, but basically having to start from scratch because their tiny home was worth next to nothing. In some ways, that's no different from renting, so they can be considered a viable alternative to that, but don't go into it thinking that it's a step toward owning a proper home.

Given the highly customized nature of tiny homes, I can't imagine a lot of them would be easy to sell.

As for getting a bigger place, I've seen a few tiny home videos discuss additional accommodations they've built. However, as a general rule, it seems like the kind of living choice you'd really have to commit to and have long-term plans in mind.

And it's not like conventional real estate isn't without its challenges either.
