| NBIceman 11/21/20 12:30:33 AM #7 | Taker vs Shinzaki I'll be up front that this match kinda had an uphill battle on its hands for me. I've never been an Undertaker fan - I don't even like his absolute best stuff as much as most people do - and when you throw in the kind of gimmicky supernatural stuff that the match was apparently based on that everyone knows I'm not a fan of and we're working on a bit of a shaky foundation. Luckily, said gimmicky stuff falls by the wayside fairly quickly, and even up to that point it is pretty entertaining to watch Shinzaki jump into orbit on chokeslams and bump around like a crazy man for all of Taker's strikes. And I can't deny, the top-rope headbutt that Taker avoided by sitting up was a legitimately awesome and clever spot. Past that, though, it'd be hard for me to sit here and say that this was a match that ever really grabbed me at any point. The work was certainly solid; nothing wrong with it by any means, and considering it was meant as an Undertaker showcase before anything, I can't claim it didn't accomplish its purpose. | NBIceman 11/20/20 11:49:40 PM #6 | AJPW Tag Well, three of the wrestlers in this match made it onto my ballot for our little Top 100 Ever project, including the guys in the top two spots, so yeah, like Ed said in his post, this was never gonna be anything less than enjoyable. I will always especially love the pairing of Hansen and Kobashi. No matter how far the latter got in his career, Hansen always seemed to take particular offense anytime he hit him, and watching the big gaijin proceed to beat the crap out of him every time never got old. And some of that certainly showed up in this match towards the end where the Americans are just taking wild swings at the kid. The biggest compliment I can give Boss Man here, who I haven't really seen much of in total, is that he definitely doesn't look out of place at all. He gives good effort, he's pretty smooth when the situation calls for it, and he works the style well. I can see from Cagematch that he had way more All Japan matches than I'd have guessed, and it makes sense after seeing how well he fits here. Some of that obviously comes from working with three of the greatest to ever do this, but he pulls his weight just fine. Not much more to say about the match itself except that I really enjoyed the finishing sequence. Iceman's Match of the Week Chris Sabin vs Katsuhiko Nakajima AJPW Pro-Wrestling Love In Ryogoku Vol. 3 - August 26, 2007 Match Link: https://www.dailymotion.com/embed/video/k34tJU2QWitz68w2oTb The "familiar face" in this one is, of course, Sabin making a rare singles tour of Japan, but for a lot of fans, Nakajima, who has spent more than a decade now as one of the most enduring and consistently good members of NOAH, could probably also qualify, especially considering he's walking in as the champion. Sabin earned this challenge by winning AJPW's Junior League over such names as TAKA Michinoku and, many years before his dick kicking and garrote wiring escapades, Dick Togo, including a victory in the finals over Shuji Kondo, who had just recently held this title for an almost-500-day reign. Sabin was doing some of the best singles work of his career at this point, and his booking everywhere he went reflected that. If you're not familiar with Nakajima, suffice it to say that he was a prodigy in every sense of the word. He's 19 years old here and already in his fourth year as a pro. And considering he was good from the time he first stepped in the ring, that's a great combination. And that puts Sabin in a fun position; he was no grizzled vet by this point by any means, but he got to work like one, punishing every mistake his overaggressive opponent makes and showing some great smarts by targeting the leg and trying to take away his brutal kicks. Brutal kicks still abound, though. Oh, do they ever. This match is much more violent than you may expect, with some of the best looking strikes you'll ever see coming from both guys. | NBIceman 11/12/20 2:05:27 PM #6 | Bad story?Yes. Bad characters?Yes. Bad mechanics?Yes. I'm probably one of the bigger Tales fans on the board and I absolutely hate Zestiria. It's a mess. Its narrative feels like about four different stories and eight different themes haphazardly stitched together like one of those ransom notes made out of magazine clippings with only the barest amount of connective tissue to make it look almost coherent. Its protagonist is a terrible modern example of a generic "Chosen One" that Tales in particular is usually good at avoiding while also somehow being the main character with by far the least agency of any one in the series. The events of the story just happen to him as he moves from place to place. And the female lead is legitimately one of the biggest Mary Sues ever. She flat-out ignores and rejects all of the rules and lore of the world, everything she does works out in her favor, her actions don't have consequences, and the rest of the party can't go five minutes without talking about how perfect she is. None of the other characters are particularly memorable either. The battle system is hamstrung by a horrible camera and a half-baked fusion system that limits the options for party makeup. The equipment system is way too complicated for the benefits it brings if you go through the trouble of figuring it out. The "dungeons" are the worst in modern Tales, which is really saying something. I don't really think any part of it enhances Berseria either - actually, some of the things that connect the two games actually get worse on both ends in my opinion. It's not worth it. | NBIceman 11/07/20 9:22:17 PM #9 | Shisa/Doi vs Milano/YOSSINO As much as I will forever hate that he brought the Paradise Lock into existence, it's always been easy to see what everyone saw in Milano Collection back when. (Side note: One of my favorite little pieces of super obscure wrestling trivia is the fact that he trained in my hometown of San Antonio for a while, randomly.) The man is smoothness personified, even more so than a lot of DG guys and that's saying something. Blend that with all of the creativity he exhibited and it was just impossible not to have at least some fun when you watched him wrestle. Injuries have derailed a lot of promising careers and he's no exception. And all around, this is just a light, breezy good time of a match. Yoshino is one of my all-time favorites, Doi is a top-five all-time tag worker, and Shisa always seemed to do stuff that you'd never see anywhere else. None of these guys save for maybe Shisa were anywhere near what they would become in the future and there's only so much you'd do on an undercard tag anyway, but nevertheless, an undercard tag in a Toryumon style at any point in history is a pretty safe bet to bottom out at "good." | NBIceman 11/07/20 7:25:18 PM #8 | Malenko/Scotty This match is very, very similar to one from some 15 years later that I have on my shortlist to use for this topic series in the future. The underdog face challenger comes out swinging and starts really hot, taking the overconfident heel champ by surprise, but once the latter sees his chance and gains control, he never lets go of it again. Scotty gets his hope spots, sure, and it takes a lot to finally put him away for good, but Malenko never feels like he's in legitimate danger of losing the match. It's a great structure and one that isn't used nearly enough today in my opinion. Malenko is a guy who I've never watched a ton of, mostly due to a good portion of his career taking place in companies and/or company eras that I just don't have a lot of interest in, but I do always enjoy him. He has the kind of simple violent streak that makes matches very easy and pleasant to watch without ever getting too self-indulgent. It's not a match I'll ever be inclined to think much about ever again, but it's definitely quite good and I enjoyed my time with it. Stray thoughts: Malenko's clothesline that shifts the match in his favor is awesome. I love that he gets caught cheating and then just wins legitimately afterwards anyway. And why can't we get camera work like this anymore, where you actually see moves impact and can follow the action? Somewhat far afield of the sort of match I generally enjoy, I suppose you could say. I'm rarely a Beyond Wrestling fan. I'm only sometimes a Tim Thatcher fan, because I think he needs the right opponent that both really jives with his style but also has enough of a difference in his work that he keeps Thatcher from some of his worse tendencies. Enter Eddie Edwards, who I'm always a fan of. If you want to see a match where every move matters, this one should strike your fancy. You won't see a whole lot of impact moves in the way we tend to think of them today, although there's certainly one or two of those, but these guys do a fantastic job of making every chop and well-placed kick seem like it's a hair's breadth from absolutely wiping out the other man. Aspects of this bout probably aren't for everyone, but it's also the kind of match that will appeal to most fans in at least some way.
