The book is not really about him trying to stop JFK's assassination. I'd say it's honestly 30% of the book. Rather than combining with Mathew to save the world or something, Lemongrab destroys Mathew and it turns into a bunch of other people? I feel like it's either making metaphors to things still to come, or is trying too hard to sound deep. I didn't understand this one either. It's pretty neat when you read the explanation though. Again, I'll slap it under some spoiler tags. Lemongrab's issue in this episode is that he's trying to learn to live with himself. His earldom is peaceful and efficient, there's no reason he should be unhappy, but he is. He sees a mural depicting the Mountain and there's a crack in the face of the traveler. That crack represents his own inner turmoil, so it freaks him out and he resolves to go to the Mountain. He's given a choice between three options. Instead of choosing his desires (PB playing catch) or preventing his fears (Lemonhope taking over), he chooses to try and stop his two halves from hurting his little doll son - this representing his own inner turmoil. At this point, Matthew tries to make Lemongrab disgusted with himself, labeling his own flesh as "grease." Matthew is made up of people who could no longer live with themselves. Lemongrab has considered this, but he ends up viewing Matthew with contempt. Matthew promises peace, but you don't actually achieve that peace by joining with him. This is what Lemongrab means when he says, "If you are the head that floats atop the ziggurat, then the stairs that lead to you must be infinite." He defeats Matthew by using a piece of Lemonjohn, the giant Lemonperson that sacrificed himself to save others. This is the polar opposite of Matthew who sacrifices others to help himself. The episode ends with Lemongrab looking at that crack in the ceiling that represented his own self-hatred and "repairing" it with a gob of lemonslime. He's accepted himself, proudly using the phrase that Matthew wanted him to find disgusting: "Yo yo, it's grease." Jeff AKA Snoopy posted...
