Topic | Senator Manchin calls House impeachment plan ill-advised |
ElatedVenusaur 01/12/21 11:39:06 AM #12 | Antifar posted... It's pure luck that the insurrectionists didn't end up in the Senate chamber.Certainly they would have never harmed as upstanding and fair-minded a public servant as Joe Manchin. |
Topic | Senator Manchin calls House impeachment plan ill-advised |
ElatedVenusaur 01/12/21 11:38:16 AM #10 | Manchin routinely does incalculable damage to Democratic messaging and gets a pass for it. And he's also eager to enable fascist putschs. |
Topic | Playing A Link to the Past for the second time |
ElatedVenusaur 01/12/21 1:34:44 AM #23 | Fire up A Link to the Past randomizer next time. It can be interesting! A Link Between Worlds was basically the perfect love letter to ALttP, in that it inhabited the same world but made you see it in a different(but not a lesser) way. |
Topic | Jacobin has a predictably terrible take on the attempted coup |
ElatedVenusaur 01/11/21 12:13:45 PM #23 | Jacobin does some good work, but, uhh...this ain't it. |
Topic | Watched Rick & Morty Acid episode due to overwhelming praise |
ElatedVenusaur 01/11/21 11:08:56 AM #17 | Plus, Rick turns himself into a pickle and goes through all that crazy, death-defying BS just to get out of going to family therapy. If you want a bad episode, go for Raising Gazorpazorp. |
Topic | Does anyone know German history post WW2? How did the nazis stop being nazis? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/11/21 12:18:08 AM #32 | It's my understanding de-Nazification was more thorough in the East(the East German government, being composed of socialists who had been persecuted since the Nazis came to power, were that much more invested in rooting out former Nazis), whereas the West was somewhat more lenient(though that isn't meant to imply that they didn't care or try). As far as a societal thing, my understanding is that it took a generation or two for a plurality of Germans to really confront the fact that WW2 Germany was exceptionally, capital E EVIL. There are, of course, still Germans(and likely always will be) who rationalize what happened, and there are probably even Holocaust deniers and/or people who think it was a pity they never turned Moscow into an artificial lake. Still, it must be said the Germans are handling things pretty well, particularly compared to other nations with dark pasts. |
Topic | Arnold Schwarzenegger compares Capitol riots to rise of the Nazis |
ElatedVenusaur 01/11/21 12:09:58 AM #55 | It really has the potential to go down as a Beer Hall putsch type thing. Except this was scarier than that. |
Topic | NFL Playoffs Official Topic |
ElatedVenusaur 01/10/21 11:58:02 PM #112 | So, the Bills, Bucs, and Browns all won a playoff game in the same weekend. Clearly the end is nigh. I would say it's been nice knowing ya'll, but I literally don't know any of you, so.... |
Topic | Would Hank Hill have been a Trump supporter? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/10/21 12:00:21 PM #18 | Yeah, Hank wouldn't vote for Trump. Bill would 1000% be on the Trump train though. |
Topic | NFL Playoffs Official Topic |
ElatedVenusaur 01/09/21 11:01:03 PM #38 | Yeah, the Seahawks have some of that late Manning-era Colts energy where you just know they're going to crash and burn spectacularly if anything ever keeps Russ out for more than a week or two. Probably not that spectacularly, but their offense is Russ, a great receiving corp, some good running backs who rotate on and off IR, and a bunch of bubble gum and expired glue for an offensive line, coordinated by one of the league's greatest nepotism cases. Brian Schottenheimer was hired to replace Darell Bevell(have we ever seen them in the same room together?). I don't think Pete gets modern offense at all, and that defense has been shoddy of late. It just feels like the Seahawks are slipping further and further away from Super Bowl contention, and the problem is bigger than a few vet FA acquisitions and a safety who low-key sucks in coverage. |
Topic | NFL Playoffs Official Topic |
ElatedVenusaur 01/09/21 6:07:53 PM #14 | The Bills almost goddamned killed me. Oh, and the Seahawks have looked like trash aside from the one play. |

ElatedVenusaur 01/09/21 2:45:09 PM #12 | There are no brakes or seatbelts on the Josh Allen Experience! Lots of cheap folding tables though. |
Topic | Video games have terrible writing |
ElatedVenusaur 01/09/21 12:48:11 PM #61 | It's certainly possible to have a good-to-great story in a video game, but it's also constrained by being an interactive medium. A video game's first duty is to be fun to play, and thus games almost uniformly allow the player to engage in the sorts of power fantasies that make grounded stories nearly impossible to tell. Like, it's ridiculous when your JRPG party fights throw a ton of enemies, but then just gives up when confronted by a few guards, because it's inconsistent, and inconsistency kills your suspension of disbelief and pulls you right out of any story Conversely, games where the main character is not insanely overpowered tend to be pretty tedious(IMO), because you wind up being largely unable to shape the game to your will: you just have to hope you've invested your skill points in the "right" places to pass the appropriate skill checks or die. This makes it easier to tell a consistent story, but probably a lot less players will be willing to jump through the hoops to get there. But, most of all, game development is such a ridiculous, never-ending grind and other forms of media are seen as more prestigious ways to tell a story, so the most talented storytellers tend to gravitate away from it. |
Topic | Stimmy money is in |
ElatedVenusaur 01/09/21 12:24:10 AM #12 | I spent basically half of my stimmy on application fees and paying off SUNY to send my transcript to the relevant schools. One of them better give me a goddamned full ride... |

Topic | Remember the Rocko episode where he had to watch Filbert's pet bird Turdy? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 8:29:33 PM #5 | That show was demented, but also consistently great. And hated on corps hard, as is good and just. |
Topic | Is a pillow top mattress worth it? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 6:16:45 PM #3 | Yeah, I had one, but it wore out and became bad. I replaced it with a non-pillow top and I'm unhappy. I went to return it, but the company offered me a free mattress topper and restarting my trial period for not returning it. Edit: I'm a side sleeper. |
Topic | Impeachment coming for Trump on Monday |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 4:28:44 PM #57 | SPE posted... but you need the majority leader to bring it to the floor too.Mitch is constitutionally compelled to consider impeachment. He could, of course, choose to drag his feet and run out the clock, but in that case, the Democrats lose nothing. Jabodie posted...Yeah, no. That's a penalty which can be imposed upon some one who has been convicted by the Senate. It is entirely contingent on removal, but it only requires a simple majority to impose. |
Topic | Bitch ass Manchin SHOOTS DOWN proposed $2000 stimulus. |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 3:36:28 PM #23 | E32005 posted... ah. maybe he is posturing to get something else through. If the price for success is plating the entire state of West Virginia in platinum, then Biden and Schumer and Pelosi ought to get to work on that now. The problem is that I doubt West Virginia or actual West Virginians rank very high on Joe Manchin's list of things he cares about. |

Which one is going to be caught working with Have people already forgotten the years '08-'16? In any case, unless the Dems go big in helping people out of this pandemic, both Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi will be handing their gavels over after the mid-terms, and I doubt Manchin is terribly bothered by the prospect. |
Topic | Do you think T-Rex was mostly a scavenger? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 1:49:06 PM #20 | Taharqa_ posted... Maybe opportunitistic and did both. Lions are the apex predators in Africa and they'll routinely steal food from other carnivores or scavenge. Why would T-Rex be any different?Yeah, asking whether the T-Rex got most of its calories from hunting itself or stealing seems like splitting hairs: there's plenty of evidence they hunted, and no doubt something that big and powerful *also* routinely rolled up on other predators and stole their kills. Probably the answer varied from place to place and from individual to individual. |
Topic | That cute, shy girl in your office? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 12:30:04 PM #24 | I dont even work in an office, and probably the shyest girl is 6 bean pole dishwasher. The next shyest would be the hyper goth cake decorator. The next-next shyest is the witch/druid goth who speaks so softly shes hard to hear. She has a BF that doesnt work there. My crush seems quite outgoing. |
Topic | It's time for the District of Columbia to become a state |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 10:35:07 AM #69 | teepan95 posted... Other countries also have states and a federal system, including my own (Germany). We not only have "city-states" such as Berlin and Hamburg (gasp!) but also federal buildings on state land (gasp!) , such as the Bundestag (think Parliament) being within the state of Berlin, or the Verfassungsgericht (constitutional court) being within the state of Baden WrttembergAnd apparently having your government on purely federal land does not necessarily mean it is more safe from insurrection. I always thought that was one of the dumber arguments. There are several reasons Washington D.C. has the status it does: 1) Our constitution was written at a time when the several states actually did have seriously divergent interests 2) The founders thought that was a great thing that should be encouraged 3)D.C. did not exist at the time 4) D.C. is full of black people and has been for a long time(this, in fact, led Congress to strip the city of its autonomy when it happened, and it took decades to even get back what they have now) |
Topic | Shin Megami Tensei V. |
ElatedVenusaur 01/08/21 12:16:20 AM #10 | Shinstrike posted... nah, IV is still the 2nd best SMT game with Apoc being the best. i know nocturne is a popularpick , and for good reason it did have char models and such not on a gif page but the gameplay was a bit outdated compared to the later entries, and Mot.Strange Journey would be good if the map design wasn't straight-up sadistic Nocturne was my first and I love it, but yeah, from a design standpoint, IV and IV:A blow it out of the water. Like, in Nocturne, you can't even freely swap demons between your party and your stock: you first have to remove a demon from your party, and only then can you add a new one! The fact that ability inheritance is such a black box also sucks, because it doesn't prevent power-gaming: it just means you refresh the fusion until the product gets the load-out you want. I hope the remaster makes the UI better and changes or at least clarifies mechanics. |

ElatedVenusaur 01/06/21 8:08:42 PM #27 | You're not going to be able to point to a single event as the genesis of any empire's decline. For America, there are countless factors, including(IMO), but not limited to:

Topic | So The House is the deciding factor on bills being passed? |
ElatedVenusaur 01/06/21 12:00:02 PM #7 | brestugo posted... Anything that costs money must originate in the House. Both the House and Senate must approve them. That's theoretically the case, but the Senate routinely grabs random bills that originated from the House, guts them, and fills them with appropriations and what not. They follow the letter of the rule, not the spirit. |

ElatedVenusaur 01/06/21 11:26:58 AM #13 | The Senate is 50D and 50R, and VP Kamala Harris breaks the tie, leading to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. This means Schumer(not McConnell) will run the Senate. It's an extremely precarious arrangement, but it means that the Dems can actually bring bills to the floor. And they had best be snappy about it: voters don't care for excuses. |

Dont expect any significant rules changes that will streamline things either. Still better than Mitch having the keys. Some stuff will get done, even though it wont be nearly enough |

I used to do most of my grocery shopping there, but they kept discontinuing the items I wanted. I now do the majority of my shopping at Costco and make more things from scratch.Yeah, they carry more big name brands now(they took the shelf space away from smaller specialty brands, of course) and theres literally no reason to buy them because theyre marked up 25-50 cents in some cases(Cheerios are super egregious here) from a normal grocery store. Also Amazon doesnt give a damn about Whole Foods beyond whatever benefits they can squeeze from the company. Our only use to them is to bolster Prime and have us push it on WFM customers and offer our stuff online via Amazon. |
