Retro video game prices in general have inflated a lot since then. And they were probably a lot higher then than they were in the late 90s. I went to a local retro video game store once and it was super cool and there were so many games to look at. I forget if I bought any or not. Then I went a few years later and the games were all super overpriced. I don't know if they were like that the first time or if they were always like that and I just didn't realize it. I've had similar experiences at all other retro video game stores and thrift stores I've been at, besides the bigger chains (Gamestop, Funcoland, etc.) many years ago. So it is actually possible that the prices were good the first time I was there and just inflated over the years. If you live in your own place your housing costs can easily be half of your income or more. No reason to pay all that for 30 years if you don't have to.
