I finished the Random Numbers short story in The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya. It feels like Takumi did a lot more Kyon/Koizumi stories/segments in the later books, which I'm fine with because they have solid chemistry. This particular story isn't anything special, but it's fun for what it is.

also whoever translated this book is far more willing to use more vulgar language than whoever translated the others

yeah the final dungeon can be tricky as far as figuring out where all the bosses are so you might want to consult a guide if you keep getting stuck

I'll put a couple of them in spoilers in case you want to find them on your own

there's a puzzle in the room with all the paintings that you have to solve, and there's a room where you have a bunch of boxes that open and close based on which one you touch that activates a boss when they're all closed if you haven't found those yet

you can also cross the swinging pendulum thing climbing up the clock tower

yeah it depends on how you define "magic"

if ghosts are just the spirits of dead people and they just happen "naturally" then they aren't necessarily magical

like in FFX when dead people become fiends that's not magic, that's just the cycle of life and death in that world

Let's continue with a bit more CSIV with the next section.

Renne and KeA display their knowledge of Eryn and their current situation, and then Roselia gathers everyone at her atelier. We ask the other group where the singularity in Heimdallr was, and they reveal it was where the Dark Dragon's Nest was. Roselia and Emma says it'll take a couple of days to pinpoint the location of the Black Workshop, but KeA decides she wants to take a crack at it. Renne also offers to help out with her 1337 hacking skillz, which make more sense now than they did in the Prologue now that I've played Zero Chapter 3...! Roselia is none too pleased with KeA and Renne stealing her thunder, and she resorts to Paper-Mario-esque text bubbles of super fast speech with very small font to accurately convey her mood. Well done, CS4.

KeA softens the blow by saying they still need Roselia's help since she's been devising a plan to sneak in once they find it. Everyone else in Class VII is eager to help, although Juna, Laura, and Fie are completely lost amid all the technobabble. Everyone chills around Eryn while we wait for the results. All the girls hang out in the hot springs (I feel like we don't need to see this with Renne and KeA, but whatever), and they decide to ask Renne what she thought of Vita when she was part of Ouroboros. Renne said their interactions were limited, but she says Vita was dedicated and earnest, regardless of the task. Randomly they all decide that Vita is an inspiration to women everywhere for some reason, but I guess I can see it! Then they say this is their opportunity to learn more about the Gnomes and the Ironbloods, as well as figuring out what Ouroboros plans to do next, as well as Zephyr and the Red Constellation. There are a lot of moving parts right now, it feels like.

We've got another free day in Eryn before we storm the Black Workshop. This time, we're controlling Altina, but we'll save that for another day.

Cold Steel IV Act 1 Chapter 3 complete at last!

We search around Mishelam for leads on Colin's disappearance. We eventually track him down at the beach, which is much less complicated than it was to find him in Zero! Juna asks why he ran off, and it says he was just frustrated at his inability to encourage his dad before he left for the war. Juna suggests making a protective charm for his dad to show him how much he cares. She says we should find a Whitestone, which is apparently the same sort of charm KeA has. Afterwards, we take him back to his parents and we have a scene that's a little more meaningful thanks to finishing the quest in Zero first (and they reference it here, naturally). Gotta admit, I was kinda hoping Renne would show up again for this one...!

With that done, we're ready to head back into the wetlands. There's a lot of blue Pleroma Grass here, and the pendulum reacts as well, so the singularity should be nearby. We finally reach an area with some black Pleroma Grass and a strange pillar of light on the ground. Alisa and Machias recognize the light as being the same as the one from the Old Schoolhouse. If overcoming that trial enabled Rean to obtain Valimar, does that mean Rufus is indeed on the verge of obtaining the seventh Divine Knight?

Right as the party is about to reach that conclusion themselves, Campanella shows up with Lechter alongside him. Then we get our first full glimpse at Sharon's dominatrix outfit, and now she's calling herself the Severing Eclipse instead of the Severing Chains. Campanella says he's surprised to see us here since Rufus made a deal with Heiyue to keep everyone busy while he takes care of business here. He knows they'll betray them eventually, but it was only meant to be temporary anyway.

Altina addresses Lechter directly, saying she doesn't understand why he's still siding with them even after it cost them Millium. Lechter tries to sidestep the question, but Ash won't let him. He says he thought Lechter stood for something, but now he's nothing more than one of Osborne's pawns. Oddly enough, Lechter doesn't deny it, although he does admit losing Millium messed him and Claire up pretty badly. They both saw her as a replacement for the family they'd lost. Osborne was the one who took his family from him, but Lechter realized he just can't compete with him when the stakes are this high. Even so, Lechter keeps defending him, saying Osborne's purpose in unleashing the Great Twilight is to end the Erebonian curse. If siding with Osborne creates a world where Millium didn't die for nothing, then he can live with himself.

This is a very rare moment of complete honesty from Lechter, but Class VII ain't accepting that. Even Musse snidely says that Osborne's plan makes hers shine by comparison. Alisa tells Sharon that she's not going to let anyone stand in their way, not even her. Sharon says she can't budge from where she stands either. Campanella tries to play the fool as he is wont to do, but Juna just can't stand the guy anymore. He has no personal stake in anything going on and still deliberately just trolls everyone and makes things worse. He really is basically an internet troll, the type who would hijack our contest and post about how we all got buttdevastated over it. Juna's words did actually seem to strike a nerve, and Campanella says his role as Enforcer No. 0 gives him a lot less leeway than the other Enforcers (since he actually represents and answers directly to the Grandmaster, if I remember right), so he tries not to take anything personally, but he's actually going to take this fight a little more seriously.

The boss fight is a little annoying at first when Lechter hits us with a Brave Order of his own, but after weathering the initial storm, I'm able to get rid of all three within 40 turns to net the extra AP with plenty of turns to spare. Campanella commends our growth, but he wonders what we're trying to achieve by traveling all over Erebonia right now. Lechter is perceptive enough to realize our goal is the black Pleroma Grass, not the pillar of light. Then those new Panzer Soldat models show up, or "Zauber Soldats" as they're actually called. Campanella says it was a joint project between Reinford and the Black Workshop. Now it's time for a Gundam battle, but these guys are major pushovers.

After the battle, Rufus emerges with the final Divine Knight, the Auric Knight, El-Prado. Juna is confused as to how one can be in Crossbell, but Rufus says that the trial grounds don't care about stuff like that. They can appear anywhere within the known Erebonian Empire. Once Crossbell was annexed, Rufus began scouring it for some sort of sign, well aware of the land's magical history. This is part of the reason he became the governor general to begin with. Naturally, Rufus wants to take his new toy out on a test drive, so it's time for another Gundam battle. He proves to be a bigger challenge than the others, but we eventually survive.

We get some cool cutscene action where New Class VII holds their own against Rufus, and then Estelle, Joshua, Lloyd, and Elie take out the other Soldats on foot just to show off. We get a cool quick moment where Ash recognizes Joshua as the other Hamel survivor. Also, a solid Silver Will remix, gotta say. In more "I wish all this stuff didn't happen offscreen" moments, they talk about breaking through Walter's defenses with the help of Arios and Yin. Estelle is surprised to see that Campanella still looks the same as he did four years ago. Then Joshua has a heart to heart with Sharon and she talks about how she owes a great debt to Leonhardt before she's interrupted by Renne and...Aleister?! Am I supposed to know this dude is legit? Wait, Bleublanc?! Wow, he had me totally fooled. Wait, he's no longer part of Ouroboros? Did they mention that in CS3? That seems vaguely familiar.

But wait, there's more! KeA shows up with the other Branch Campus people, as well as Jona and Sully for some reason. As has been the case in every chapter so far, now that everyone's assembled, the bad guys depart. That being said, I'm so glad they were able to get D.C. Douglas back to voice Rufus. He brings just the right amount of smugness to the role. And Lechter just can't leave any scene without doing the walk away wave, and he brings it back for CSIV, unfortunately. Having Sharon here makes me glad I brought Alisa along, although I'm sure Jusis probably has some solid dialogue with Rufus, too. That being said, Alisa's parting shot that she'll always be Sharon to her was nice.

Josette shows up to the rescue and we place the final stake into the singularity. This is a serious missed opportunity by not giving us some snarky exchanges between Estelle and Josette. The branch campus students talk about their surprise at working side by side with the society. Renne says she and Joshua are former members, so they can just think of her as Tita's friend instead. Even Bleublanc pours one out for Olivert, his worthy rival. Wait, so he's been working with Musse and Vita all along?

Joshua almost calls Ash by his real name, which looks like it might be "Johan." Somehow Joshua avoids the Spanish J in his name, but everyone else keeps getting it. Ash downplays it and Joshua realizes this isn't the time and place for this conversation. Lloyd gives Juna some of his customary words of encouragement before taking off, and I realize it's no wonder Juna has developed a penchant for fancy speeches when she was taught by Lloyd and Rean both. The SSS is staying in Crossbell, and Estelle and Joshua are headed to Erebonia to find Tita, Agate, and Schera. KeA offers to tag along with New Class VII for a while, which is unexpected. She thinks she can pinpoint Rean's location. Wait, Renne's coming, too? This is wild.

Let's make some progress in Cold Steel IV Act 1 Chapter 3!

As we progress, Juna talks some about her dad, who helped build a new railway line and does a lot of work for Mishelam Wonderland. Everyone is willing to take a detour to visit him since Juna says he probably won't be home for a while due to travel restrictions, but she doesn't seem totally keen on it, for whatever the reason. Well, there's another route that leads toward it that we can't take right now, so perhaps we'll get to go later.

When we finally arrive at St. Ursula, Alisa mentions that the hospital gets funding from Remiferia, and they treated Sharon here at one point. Around the hospital, a few people mention Linde but also say that no one knows where she is now. There's also talk of a VIP patient getting ready to undergo surgery, but we're not told who it is. Oh hey, we're actually able to enter the research building in this game!

...Or we're about to when Rufus and Vandyck show up at the hospital. It sounds like Emperor Eugent has awoken from his coma, but he's not out of the woods yet. Ah, so this must be the VIP patient they mentioned earlier. Suddenly, Valerie and Grace (for some reason) call out to us to follow them so we won't get spotted by Rufus. Valerie hints as to the identity of who Rufus and Vandyck are here to see, and everyone seems to catch on, which is rare for a Trails party...! Next, Cecile shows up, who's now the chief nurse (or was she already in Zero? I forget). She's come to tell us that the emperor wants to meet with us once Rufus and Vandyck are gone, which I certainly wasn't expecting, especially since Ash is with us!

Eugent is surprisingly pleasant, all things considered. The presiding doctor, whose name Seiland rings a bell to Kurt but he can't quite place it, gives us ten minutes of privacy with him. He seems genuinely remorseful for all that's happened, and he holds no ill will toward Ash since he was under the influence of the same curse he was under. Then the emperor gets down to business, saying that while everything up to this point has gone according to plan for Osborne and the Gnomes, the Black Records end where the Great Twilight begins. In other words, they have no guarantee of what will happen next, so even things they could not foresee could occur. He gives us a document containing everything he told Rean in CS3 in hopes that we could find the third path that Olivert sought. So he wasn't really on Osborne's side at all, it seems. He just felt hopeless in the face of the Black Records.

When we leave the room, Dr. Seiland tells us that there's shrapnel near the Emperor's heart and he needs an operation within the next couple weeks. Even then, the chances of success are still only about 30% or so. Then we're interrupted by Commander Vandyck, who wishes to speak to Class VII directly. New Class VII is understandably worried, but Alisa and Machias have no reservations, naturally. Vandyck tells us that he has no idea where Rean is because he's been limited to events "on the surface" as per orders from Osborne himself. Musse asks him if he's really prepared to lead Erebonia to war with all he knows, and he replies that this is what it means to be a soldier. A soldier puts everything on the line for his country, and he knows Craig and Vander feel the same way.

Juna says that while that may be a soldier's duty, she's determined to show him that Class VII is different. They're determined to find Rean and find their own way. They won't leave this to anyone else. Vandyck says that Class VII has exceeded all the expectations he had for it when Olivert presented the idea to him three years before. He implores us to save Rean and find their new path.

With that, we're off to the wetlands in hopes of finally locating the singularity. I wander around the hospital a bit, wondering if anyone will say anything about Shizuku. Sure enough, they mention that her eyesight was completely healed. Anyway, it's kind of ironic that I'm going to the wetlands toward Mishelam in CSIV right now because I'm pretty sure that's my next destination in Trails From Zero, too! The atmosphere and the music here is kinda haunting, I like it.

As we progress through the wetlands, the Imperial Defense Force is patrolling throughout the area. That means that Rufus came through this area ahead of us, and there's a dark looking Panzer Soldat as well. Could it be a Divine Knight for Rufus...? It doesn't have the same style as the other Divine Knights, so maybe not. Alisa says that RF was in the process of developing a new model, so perhaps that's it. Anyway, we're at a standstill until we get a call from Stark, asking us to come back to St. Ursula to meet him. He's lending us an orbal boat so that we can circle around Mishelam and enter the wetlands from the other side. We get the point of no return warning from Alisa, so I imagine we're finally closing in on the end of Act 1, whew.

As we leave, we get a cut to a woman who is obviously Sharon, no longer dressed as a maid, but as something considerably skimpier. She says she plans to leave Yin to the Direwolf (was that Walter's code name or is that someone else? I know Walter is from Calvard, so it would make sense) and deal with us herself. Eventually we arrive at the Mishelam Resort, but I imagine we won't have too much time to play in the amusement park, sadly. We decide our first move is to meet Juna's dad because he can probably give us the best route to get through the wetlands undetected.

Unfortunately, her dad isn't at the hotel at the moment. He's out on an inspection due to the sudden influx of visitors to the park. As such, we have to hunt him down ourselves. In our wanderings, we run into the middle of Alan proposing to Bridget. Altina's reaction to Juna's reaction is fantastic ("Did you hear? They're gonna get married!" "Indeed. I, too, was present when you witnessed the proposal."). Even Alan appears to have been swept up by the Great Twilight, unfortunately. Bridget spots us and after a bit of conversing, she tells us that she saw Juna's dad in the theme park area. I was hoping the ferris wheel would have some unique dialogue depending on which pair you chose, but alas, what a disappointment. We run into Beryl in the Castle of Mirrors, and she basically tells us that after we trigger three cutscenes, we'll find Juna's dad, but I could've told you that! Then we meet Anton at the Horror Coaster (really should've called it the Roller Ghoster imhotbqh), and he says he thought he saw the purple-haired girl he's been searching for go inside, but it wasn't her in the end, of course. Turns out Juna's dad bailed him out of some potential trouble as well. The Horror Coaster turns out to be a real mini-game, so that's neat. You don't get a prize for beating the target score though, which is lame.

We somehow end up right next to Juna's dad during the Mishy show without even realizing it. The others seem surprised that he's Juna's dad despite the fact that she's been showing a picture of him to everyone. I guess pink hair is a dominant gene in Zemurian biology. Matthew tells us that the governor general said the wetlands were off limits at the moment, even to Mishelam personnel. He hands us the wetlands keycard to open a door that leads into it from the beach area.

Suddenly I'm feeling deja vu as I run into the Hayworths looking for their lost son, but I'll have to tackle this later.
