Yeah uhh, Rock is right here. People saying they would file a missing persons after two or three days are being ridiculous.

I'm glad people know me well enough that it's not strange if I go days before responding to a text or call. Unfortunately I live alone and when I inevitably choke to death the only hope for someone to find my body is my work to send someone over or for my rotting corpse to smell super bad
I don't think it's irrational to file a missing person report if you expect your friend or family member for something and nobody else who knows them can get ahold of them either. I'm sure there's more to this that makes it more understandable that we're not hearing.

There should be about 10 different steps in between a missed phone call and filing a missing-person report. I mean I literally went an entire month without a phone because it was broken and this didn't happen.
"I can't believe the people who care about me are so dumb that after not being able to contact me for a few days without warning, they went to the police instead of calling my work or neighbors" is certainly a take.

No offense, but this is dumb and I don't think you actually figured this.

If you thought a missing persons report could be called, you wouldn't have not told anyone in the first place and wasted police's time to check in with work or neighbors or unnecessarily involve your workplace or neighbors in it regardless.

And chances are the report was sent out and while they were on the lookout for you with all of your information and people were being called and information circulated amongst the police while they made calls, they just saw you on the road.

DAY 28: Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight
On Netflix

Man, the Polish don't fuck around with their horror movies.

Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is set in a Polish camp for kids addicted to technology. But when they get there, they are being hunted down by a deformed, grotesque man.

Like I mentioned, this is a Polish movie and it's your standard camp killer movie, but with an added twist of no technology and weird teen drama. It surpassed my low expectations honestly, as the kills were all unique and they subverted your expectations. I was pretty surprised actually at how much they took scenes in a direction I didn't expect.

It's clearly a love letter to the genre, and the grotesque killer is just horrific to see on top of being really good at murder. The teen drama kinda sucked for the most part and I couldn't begin to care about anyone's individual story. It was more of a horror popcorn flick for me.

Not really much else to say. I recommend it I guess if you want to see a camp killer movie, because it does a good job of that.

I thought Baghuul was perfectly fine as the demon weirdo who doesn't really have to do much!

DAY 27.2: Friday the 13th (1980)
On AMC

So okay, Friday the 13th is a series that I really never loved, but I enjoyed well enough I guess? They all sort of blend together for me....... except for this one. And I will end up spoiling this one, so if you don't know the major difference between the first movie in the series and the rest, go ahead and stop reading.

Camp Crystal Lake has MURDER happen after a young boy drowns 21 years prior. But then they try to re-open the camp and then all the counselors start to get murdered.

It's been forever since I watched the original movie. It's kind of boring through the first part... and honestly pretty unremarkable until you get to the end. Last chance for spoilers!

Jason's Mom is the killer in this one, and she's completely unhinged and performs her role perfectly. She's a delight to watch, honestly, being a psycho with a large knife. She's the best part of this movie by far.

That said, I kinda hate how this is all set up. We do POV shots and cut away each time anything is going to happen until we see the victims' corpses all flopping about to scare the final girl. It's just not a great way to do it, but when you get to the killer reveal, you get why. If it weren't for the reveal, this movie would suck. Full stop. But it improves so much after that. I wish they gave us a little bit more before that.

It's a clever movie in that it tricks you into thinking it's Jason for the whole movie. It's a great little campfire story redirection. It's just that the movie isn't great until we get towards the end. But I kind of really appreciate it once it gets there?

But the music in this movie is a hell of a lot better than I remember. It's all so iconic with striking string instruments at perfect times. It does make it all feel a lot better and stand out.

I would say it's worth watching from Jason's Mom onward, just to see how the original ended up playing out. It's just so different from the maniac machete-wielding Jason Vorheese we're all used to, because the most action you get in this movie is an older woman with a knife. And that's kind of funny in retrospect. I score it as high as I do entirely because of the storytelling and the back end of the movie.

Rating: 6.5/10

Debating whether or not to watch the remake or the second film after this in the next few days. I'm thinking the second movie because I want to be reminded of just how different it is from the first film. And also because the remake is kinda bad.

I may have mentioned that I heard people saying they thought the second movie was better, and I've always remembered it being underwhelming. But I plan on watching the second one again to see if so can give it a second shot! I've watched the first Sinister at least 8 times now at this point. I've only watched the second one once in theaters.

I'm watching the original Friday the 13th now, but in the meantime listen to this song from the Sinister soundtrack because what a freaking chilling banger of a song.

DAY 27.1: Sinister
On Peacock

So okay guys, I will go ahead and just tell you all that I probably love Sinister more than most people do. Because I LOVE this movie.

Sinister is about a crime writer who moves his family into a house where the murder of a family takes place in order to see if he can write a new hit novel. When he moves in, he finds a super 8 projector and films that depict the murder of families.

Excuse me while I gush about Sinister for a bit. I think this movie is brilliant. Absolutely freaking brilliant. I don't know where to start with this movie, so I'll just pick something.

I love how utterly creepy the super 8 films are. The graininess of them combined with the realistic snuff-style murders of the families is just so bone-chilling. It all looks so authentic and real, especially when they show the happy families before their terrible murders. I think this is just such an amazing idea. This is what makes the movie stand out to me. Very few things have really made me feel so unnerved like those.

Just the way this movie is filmed in general is a masterpiece. Scott Derrickson is so good at what he does and this movie just comes across so damn real at all points and leaves you so unsure and uneasy all the time. They hit you with unrelated scares, creepy scares related to the films, and even the jump scares are so properly placed to keep your heart racing and make you never feel safe in scenes where you think you know what's up.

And I love the plot. I love the real life struggle of this man who is trying so hard to make a novel at the cost of moving his family into a murder house and the drama that comes out of that. But what's better is the mystery around these movies. It's so greatly paced and each piece brings you closer and closer, but you never quite get it until the very end. Watching this movie as a story about a desperate author first and spookiness second is just great storytelling. But when you add in a layered and deep mystery involved with grisly murders that leaves you guessing, you just can't help but feel so interested in how it ends.

Even seeing this movie as many times as I have, when I get to the last 10-15 minutes when everything starts to unravel and they hit you with all of the turns of the story to explain it all, and then leads you into such a satisfying conclusion that wraps every single thing up perfectly, god damn. It feels good. You never know what you're expecting and I still feel so unsettled, even now, watching the conclusion of this film.

I think the soundtrack is among the best horror soundtracks as well. This uses an industrial sound, mixed with projector-like sounds in a somber yet aggressive tone. It adds a bizarre wailing in some that sounds so inhuman. The sound usage in this movie is great too, just with that damn projector among other things. It's no wonder this movie is able to keep you on edge so much with this soundtrack.

To me, this movie is amazing. I know some people don't feel as strongly about it as I do, but I just love watching this movie and still catching tiny things each time I watch it, and finding something new to appreciate about it.

I will always recommend people watch Sinister. It does so many unique and well-thought out things with the plot that can grip you so hard. This may be my wildcard 10/10 score, but it's one I'll always stick by. I think it's just a brilliant film from every stage.

DAY 27: Black Christmas (1974)
On Youtube - For Free!

This movie is about as good as you can get for what is regarded as the original modern day slasher movie (something I knew going in actually!).

Black Christmas is about a deranged psycho hiding in the attic of a sorority house who begins murdering people inside. Oh and it's Christmas time.

This is a very effective movie at what it sets out to do. It's a disturbing, creepy portrayal of an unhinged murderer hiding right above a group of people he's systematically killing. He makes phonecalls, shrieking and yelling obscene things. The killer, named Billy, is freaking terrifying.

I think this can only be compared to Halloween only to an extent. I think they are such different movies, despite both being slashers and despite Halloween being inspired by a lot of Black Christmas. For one, Michael Myers is just a silent murderer. He's the polar opposite of Billy in every way. He doesn't hide unless he's making a kill. He's undeterred. He's an imposing threat in front of your eyes. Billy, on the other hand, is a raving, spitting psychopath. You never really see him, and he's more or less faceless, but he's just not really Michael Myers at all.

I also feel, as a film, Black Christmas feels more like a modern day popcorn slashers, cracking jobs and being more comedic at times while Halloween doesn't really go out of its way to be funny. They want you to feel a lightened load for Black Christmas before digging in the dagger deep. And we're meant to be terrified of this unseeable threat from Billy, whereas in Halloween we see Michael Myers directly and see the absolute monster he is.

But that's enough about comparing, because I feel like I'm negatively portraying Black Christmas. But it's an excellent movie and I loved watching it. I recall seeing only part of this before, but it's a hell of a movie and a classic for good reason. They create tension and fear extremely well and throw in the comedy to keep you at ease before it ratchets up everything.

My only criticisms is that anything that didn't really involve the killer didn't draw me in very much, and I felt like it wasn't as tightly wound as I would have liked.

Aside from that, it's a satisfying, twisted movie with a good ending. Yeah, I recommend it bigly. Especially if you want to see where a ton of slasher movies drew their inspiration from.

Rating: 8.5/10

Side-rant: This makes Black Christmas 2019 so much more confounding. They replace Billy with a misogyny cult, throw magic BS in there, and that was supposed to be a not-so-subtle allegory for misogyny as opposed to Billy just very clearly being an embodiment of it? I really liked the director's New Year, New Me movie too, but I have no idea why she felt this movie would be good with this concept. I haven't seen it yet, but I haven't heard a single person say anything positive about it which is pretty telling.

I won't even discuss the 2006 version since that one just outright sucks because it sucks everything good out of this one.
