https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3vgvj/cops-arrest-essential-union-workers-striking-for-dollar1-raise

On Monday night, police officers arrested peaceful striking workers at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in New York City who were demanding a small hourly raise from management.
More than 1,400 workers at the market are on strike after management refused to raise their hourly wages by $1 and a 60 cent hourly raise to fund health care benefits. Management at the market had countered with a 32 cent per hour raise.

Early Tuesday morning, Teamsters Joint Council 16representing the union of striking workers, Local 202posted videos to Twitter of NYPD officers arresting peaceful strikers on a picket line. In one video, strikers can be seen raising their hands up shouting "Hands up, don't shoot" as police officers swarm them. In another video, officers rush the strikers as a robotic voice booms in the background.

Its unclear how many arrests were made, but a Teamsters press release notes that several workers were arrested. Spokespeople for Teamsters and the NYPD did not immediately respond to Motherboards request for comment.
It is outrageous that after being called essential heroes for months, several of our members were arrested while peacefully protesting for a raise today, said Daniel Kane Jr. president of Teamsters Local 202, in a statement. These are the essential workers who went to work every day through the worst of the pandemic to feed New York. All they are asking for is a dollar-an-hour raise so they can feed their families too. The fact that they were arrested on Martin Luther King Day reminds us what side of history we are on.
Striking workers included warehouse workers and truck drivers, with a base annual salary of $40,000adequate only for a single adult with no children in the city. In 2018, about 17 percent of New Yorkers lived below the poverty linein Hunts Points/Longwood, that number is nearly 38 percent.
The Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in the Bronx is the largest of three cooperative markets that form the backbone of the Hunts Food Distribution Center, which itself is the largest cluster of food sources in the city. Over 155 public and private wholesalers, distributors, and manufacturers operate there, but the produce market alone captures about 60 percent of all produce sales in the city and is the largest produce marketplace in the country.

This is the first strike at the market since January 1986. In 2012, Local 202 threatened to strike after management proposed an hourly raise of 14 cents while reducing contributions to the union's health and welfare funds. In 2015, another strike was nearly authorized when it seemed negotiations would fall apart as unions asked for a $25-per-week raise and management countered with $16-per-week.

Also on Monday night, the NYPD attacked Black Lives Matter protesters commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. at City Hall Park. Videos posted online show charging into protests and hitting them, while witnesses report that police told protesters to get on the sidewalk then began grabbing, attacking, and arresting members of the crowd.

The fact that the NYPD has its own union has clearly not stopped the organization from strike-breaking or, as it did all summer, rioting against protests. Its not clear why police officers should have a union or be a part of the labor movement when they've repeatedly chosen to use their power against workers and demonstrators. Instead, theyve chosen to accumulate political power, dismiss accusations of police brutality, shield themselves from scrutiny, and form ties with racists and white supremacists.

TopicMichigan GOP seeking to replace canvasser who certified election

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2021/01/18/michigan-republicans-seek-replace-canvasser-who-certified-election/4202195001/
The Michigan Republican Party wants to replace the GOP member of the Board of State Canvassers who cast the pivotal vote to certify election results in favor of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden.

With party activists calling for certification to be blocked on Nov. 23, Aaron Van Langevelde, a policy adviser and deputy legal counsel for state House Republicans, joined the two Democrats on the four-member board to sign offon the results.
His term ends on Jan. 31. Instead of renominating him for a four-year term, the Michigan Republican Party has proposed three well-known activists to take his spot, according to a letter obtained by The Detroit News. Among them is Linda Lee Tarver, who was involved in a lawsuit that sought to have the GOP-controlled Legislature intervene in the results showing Democratic President-elect Joe Biden won.

Van Langevelde said he was never asked if hed like another term on the board, unlike the first time he was nominated, when the party approached him about serving. He said the partys decision came as no surprise, but he stood by his vote and said he was proud of the boards decision.

My conscience is clear, and I am confident that my decision is on the right side of the law and history, Van Langevelde said in a Monday statement. Time will tell that those who spread misinformation and tried to overturn the election were wrong, and they should be held responsible for the chaos and confusion they have caused. "
...
Under state law, the Michigan Republican Party can nominate three individuals for a seat on the Board of State Canvassers. Whitmer has until Wednesday to pick one for the position.

Van Langevelde "did not request to be considered for reappointment to the state canvasing board," said Tony Zammit, a spokesman for the Michigan Republican Party.

Van Langevelde cast the deciding vote to certify Biden's 154,000-vote lead in Michigan. The other Republican member of the board, Norm Shinkle, abstained. What is usually a procedural process was fraught with controversy as supporters of GOP President Donald Trump pushed to delay certification and overturn the state's results based on unproven claims of fraud.

"We have a clear legal duty to certify the results of the election, as shown by the returns that were given to us," Van Langevelde said during the meeting. "We cannot and should not go beyond that. As John Adams once said, 'We are a government of laws, not men.'"

On Monday, Van Langevelde said political leaders pressured the Board of State Canvassers to delay certification, even knowing there was no legal avenue for them to do so, essentially asking the board to take power we didnt have.
The cost of such pressure and continued unproven allegations of election fraud have resulted in constitutional chaos and a loss of our honor and dignity.

It was clear in November that the political games needed to stop it is even more clear now, he said. The United States Capitol has been sacked, and our state Capitol is under threat. The country is torn along partisan lines, and people have died because of it. Its time for our leaders to tell the truth, even when it is politically inconvenient, and to put our country and the people over party politics.

Van Langevelde said Monday he was 100% prepared and committed to his vote to certify the election, but said he was surprised by "how bad tensions had gotten after the election."

"I was prepared to do my job, but I wasnt prepared to make arrangements to protect my family," Van Langevelde said, noting there came a point where law enforcement became involved. "That was something that was new to me.

Among the three GOP nominees for Van Langevelde's seat, Tarver of Lansing has been the most aggressive in pushing claims about the Nov. 3 election. She appeared at a Dec. 1 Michigan Senate Oversight Committee hearing about the election.

"No election after 2020 should be considered fair unless we get this right this year, Tarver said during the hearing.
She was also a plaintiff in an unsuccessful suit against Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the Board of State Canvassers. The suit claimed there were "many issues of mistake, fraud and other malfeasance at the TCF Center," where absentee ballots were counted in Detroit.

Related: https://www.thenation.com/article/environment/florida-flooding-miami/
Florida, former swampland that is just above sea level, is the US state at greatest risk from increasingly regular floods. The sea is rising fast, and king tides, huge surges in autumn, are especially destructive. Drain outlets are below high-tide level during the surges, so salt water enters the drainage system and bubbles up from storm drains, submerging roads and underground parking lots for days. In 2016 a photograph of an octopus washed up in a Miami Beach car park gained widespread attention. This recent surge phenomenon is called sunny day flooding, because it happens even when there is no rain. In some parts of the Florida Keys, the archipelago south of Miami, the 2019 floods lasted an unprecedented 90 days.

Theres another, geological, problem: Miami, unlike other coastal cities such as New York and New Orleans, stands on a bed of silt that acts like a sponge, so the encroaching sea also gets into freshwater aquifers and septic tanks.
