Yesterday's results:

Oregon > Yukon, 8-7
Washington > Maine, 9-6
British Columbia > Vermont, 8-7
Colorado > North Carolina, 14-1

In a relatively active day, all three Cascadian subdivisions managed to win, but none without a struggle. It looks like we're on course for some very interesting matches next round.

Which of yesterday's losers is your favorite?

Welcome to the final day of Round 2 of Board 8's Favorite North American Subdivision! First, don't forget to take a look at our few quick, common-sense rules if you haven't already:
  • Alt voting is lame. Don't do it.
  • Editing your vote is allowed as long as you're not changing the subdivision you're voting for in a given match; preferably don't delete and repost your vote to correct a typo when you can edit it instead.
  • Matches will last exactly 24 hours - no less and no more, not even by a second.
  • If a given match is tied at that time, I'll run tiebreakers on subsequent days until one subdivision wins.
  • I reserve the right to edit these rules at any time should I have missed something or otherwise feel it's necessary.
  • Most importantly, I encourage you to help keep this topic bumped (especially in the PDT mornings when I'm asleep), tell others about B8FNAS, and generally have fun!

Now, let's move on to today's contenders and their matches:

Northwest Territories vs. Alberta

I certainly didn't expect this Canadian border match, even though I probably should have. In theory, Alberta has a big advantage, but its foe did look more impressive last round.

Quebec vs. New Hampshire

In another border match, we have the huge French-speaking piece of Canada versus a much smaller slice of New England. Both sides have reputations to keep up, but only one can do so here.

Pennsylvania vs. Mississippi

Pennsylvania presumably has a lay-up here, but I can and have been surprised before. Mississippi does happen to be the very last Southern state left, after all.

New Brunswick vs. Wisconsin

These two subdivisions have relatively similar shapes and broad climates, but they're rather different otherwise. Will New Brunswick manage to keep the Maritimes alive, or will Wisconsin replicate its westerly neighbor's continued success?

Now, let's move on to today's contenders and their matches:

Yukon vs. Oregon

It's the former Yukon Territory against the former (once much larger) Oregon Territory in a clash of the Western tier. Perhaps Yukon will become the latest Canadian province to surprise on its own merits?

Washington vs. Maine

Here, we have the opposite northern ends of the lower 48, and their respective coasts, facing off. In a West vs. East clash, which will win?

Vermont vs. British Columbia

Vermont faces a stiff challenge in its efforts to capitalize on its upset momentum in the form of the third and last of the three Cascadian subdivisions in three consecutive matches.

North Carolina vs. Colorado

The standard-bearer of the Rockies faces yet another Appalachian state here, only North Carolina is known for much more than its mountains. Will Colorado add to its streak against states with shorter mountains?

On reflection, I'd also name A Short Hike as a much more recent example of this, where I'd say my decision to play it essentially blind and unguided, my mental state the day I played it, and the place I'm at in my life conspired to make it a truly special experience.

Those are some nice votals! Let's hope they stay about this high for the rest of the contest. New York vs. Nevada

Both of these states have significant mountain ranges and drastic population concentrations at their respective southern ends (which each have reputations for showmanship), but they're very different otherwise. Will the Mid-Atlantic or the Great Basin take this bout?

Virginia vs. Manitoba

This match sort of plays out the same story as the next one, except that Virginia's coasts are more important to its identity than its rivers. Will Manitoba continue its dark horse run?

Ontario vs. Louisiana

The Canadian province is characterized by its lakes, whereas the American state is characterized by its rivers. Will this be just another predictable north vs. south clash?

New Jersey vs. Hawaii

Even Zen seems to think Hawaii has New Jersey beaten in the beaches department, but can the rest of what comprises these two states swing this match the other way?

The key difference is that a significant amount of normal people don't like Rey as a character or her (last two) movies in general, whereas the Captain Marvel backlash is largely limited to trolls behind a keyboard, to steal a quote from a certain legendarily bad movie's marketing. That's not to say the latter wouldn't affect her strength here at all, since this is GameFAQs we're talking about after all, but (particularly when extended to their respective franchises in general) it's the major distinction between the two.

Anyways, I'll also agree with Low Fodder for all.

California vs. Connecticut

California's just cruising for an upset after last round, and maybe one of the many states that looked better than it can get the job done in a west coast vs. east coast clash.

Montana vs. Massachusetts

Will Montana continue riding its upset train here, or will it merely prove to be equivalent to its northern neighbor? The results don't lie... or do they?

Ohio vs. New Mexico

I lied, there's another state that doesn't actually exist besides Ohio in this bracket. That's assuming you go by what a good chunk of the American public would say, at least.

Alaska vs. Minnesota

The coldest state in the lower 48 faces the coldest state of them all in what could be called a grudge match. Now it's up to B8 to determine our favorite.

I could see Wile E. being Mid Fodder along the same lines as Tom (and indeed, the former was the Looney Tunes character I was talking about way back when), but I'll agree with Low on the basis that Tom didn't have to share the spotlight with multiple more popular and more frequently appearing characters.

I doubt Moltres is on par with the other Legendary Birds just because it shares that status. I'm not a big believer in legendary status alone making a difference for a Pokmon's popularity here; Articuno and Zapdos are popular largely in their own rights, whereas Moltres isn't very popular despite its status. And while I agree the popularity gap on its own wouldn't necessarily comprise a whole tier, there's also the dual facts that Moltres is clearly the least effective in battle (mainly in RBY versus Articuno), and more importantly that Moltres was tucked away in Victory Road at the very end of RBY. With all that in mind, Mid Fodder is my vote.

Likewise, I can't say I agree with the consensus on Riki's strength. Riki does not strike me as being in a substantively different place from Reyn among Xenoblade fan favorites, who simply started too weak to reach Mid Fodder. I don't think Xenoblade is quite big enough to automatically justify Mid Fodder for a non-hated party member, either. Its strength is about on par with DQXI here, and (for good reason), we've widely agreed that only a minority of that game's roster exceeds Low Fodder, even though they lack a beloved main protagonist to compete with. Likewise, Xenoblade is both weaker and less character-focused than Persona 5, whose own main protagonist completely embarrassed himself last time (and after GotD 2, we can safely call it that, match pic quibbles or no). Thus, Low Fodder is my vote.

I'll also agree with halfsilver (if random CT bosses can't break Low Fodder, neither can random LttP bosses), and add that even if Wonka got the Gene Wilder version in a match pic, we'd be talking about a 70s movie which wasn't even a big hit in its time. That's not a recipe for GameFAQs strength no matter how well-liked the character in question is.

As for Rin, since no one else addressed her, I'll just condense my reasoning from way back when: bottom line, her source material is just too obscure on this site - even if she does have waifu appeal for days, she lacks a reason for voters to care about that.

Also, rerank Captain Marvel, I guess.

Now, let's move on to today's contenders and their matches:

Florida vs. Northwest Territories

The subdivision with the warmest winters duels the subdivision with the coldest winters. Will Florida bungle its way to a loss against the third and last of Canada's northern tier?

Alberta vs. Iowa

The former represents the northwestern extent of the Great Plains; the latter comprises one of its eastern extents. Alberta's Rocky Mountain sweep should make it the favorite, but can it capitalize?

Quebec vs. Delaware

One is huge, the other tiny. Both started their European colonial history by way of unconventional nations. Which will win?

Indiana vs. New Hampshire

A rather typical Midwest state faces a rather typical New England state in what should be a good gauge of both groups' relative strength here.

FL v NT
AB v IA
QC v DE
IN v NH

Yesterday's results:

Yukon > Texas, 8-4
Oregon > Utah, 8-4
Washington > Rhode Island, 10-2
Maine > Tennessee, 9-3

All the more northerly subdivisions won this time around, and none of the matches were particularly close, as 2-seed Texas notably fell victim to antivoting.

Which of yesterday's losers is your favorite?

Welcome to the sixth day of Board 8's Favorite North American Subdivision!

Illinois vs. Vermont

It's the Land of Lincoln up against the land of the Green Mountain Boys; both states could be considered to have played key roles in shaping the American ethos, but only one can win.

British Columbia vs. Kansas

The one Canadian subdivision in today's set makes its first appearance against the most central state of the Lower 48. I doubt the winner will be in question, but maybe the margin will be telling?

North Carolina vs. North Dakota

The two states with 'north' in their names face off; one is far more populous and diverse than the other, but does that matter in a south vs. north clash on B8?

Colorado vs. West Virginia

Here, we have the state most synonymous with the Rockies versus the state most synonymous with the Appalachians in a west vs. east referendum.

IL v VT
BC v KS
NC v ND
CO v WV

Nominate Captain Marvel and Jar Jar Binks for re-ranking.

You may nominate one character per day for this
In other words, pick one.

Anyways, I'm going to err towards Mid Fodder for Atem, because Yu-Gi-Oh is a bit too young relative to our voterbase to support anything higher.

Agree with halfsilver otherwise. This is not the site for Garfield memes, but the character does have a solid baseline level of name value, aided by forced apathy votes. It's unfathomable to think he'd be a whole tier worse than Tom here, for example.

I'll also nominate Azula, Billy Lee, Bulma, Cactuar, Cadence, Coco Bandicoot, Cthulhu, Cyan Garamonde, Espeon, Fina, Finn, Gloria, Harry Du Bois, Hela (Marvel), Helmasaur King, Hsien-Ko, Jack Frost, Jessie (Toy Story), Jolteon, Kassandra, Leviathan (Final Fantasy), Maggie Simpson, Maria Renard, Marin (Links Awakening), Moltres, Mr. Saturn, Okabe Rintarou, Omanyte, Princess Ruto, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, Psylocke, Queen Brahne, Quina Quen, Rayne, Relm Arrowny, Rita Repulsa, Sami, Sam & Max, Scyther, Stan Lee, Starmie, Thief (Final Fantasy), Toejam & Earl, Uncle Fester, Wartortle, and Willy Wonka for ranking.

Yesterday's results:

Ontario > Newfoundland and Labrador, 11-2
Louisiana > Arkansas, 13-0
New Jersey > South Dakota, 8-5
Hawaii > Maryland, 10-3

We've seen some major blowouts already, but never before has a subdivision been completely shut out. It happening here isn't completely shocking, though - Arkansas was inevitably going to be among the weakest contest entrants independent of its substantial overlap with Louisiana. Also, Hawaii managed to look like a potential contest winner despite its low seed.

Now, let's move on to today's contenders and their matches:

Texas vs. Yukon

Both have southwesterly mountains and stretch over large areas, but that's about it as far as similarities go. Will this match be the next California/Nunavut?

Oregon vs. Utah

Two Western states of very different ilks, but both share fiercely independent cultures. Which will win?

Washington vs. Rhode Island

Both northerly states have notable islands that are merely minor components of their overall sweep. In a question of diversity versus density, which will win?

Tennessee vs. Maine

Tennessee isn't quite the southern end of the Appalachians, while Maine isn't quite the northern end, but both share that common ground. Will this match continue the Southeast's struggles?

OR v UT
WA v RI

Agree with halfsilver's votes. I do want to deviate with some of the reasoning, though.

Raikou: I'd guess it's at least on par with Entei, as it certainly seems more popular, and I doubt the minor nostalgia kick from the underseen third movie can completely reverse that.

Swampert: While I personally prefer Torchic's line to Mudkip's by quite a bit, I'd hardly say Blaziken is the clear favorite versus Swampert among prospective voters as a whole. Both should be among the few post-Johto Pokmon with a modicum of strength here.

Woodstock: I wouldn't underestimate the nostalgic sway the Peanuts brand has with GameFAQs at this point, especially with forced apathy votes. Woodstock might be decent Low Fodder for that reason alone, just as we might have underranked Snoopy.

Also, I guess I'll second reranking Garfield. I do think it's totally possible and maybe even probable that he'd be worse off than Snoopy here, as I suspect his brand did a poorer job clicking with voters while they were malleable kids.

Yesterday's results:

New York > Prince Edward Island, 9-3
Nevada > Kentucky, 11-1
Virginia > Nova Scotia, 8-4
Manitoba > Missouri, 9-2

The most impressive performance was once again by a Western state against a Southern state. Meanwhile, Manitoba continued the Canadian Plains' surprising streak after its westerly neighbor's good shows against Massachusetts and in the losers' poll.
