At long last, it's the ultimate west vs. east clash. Both these states are too manifold for a few sentences to do them justice, so I'll just briefly summarize the regional stakes here: California is the last Sun Belt state left, fighting to prove its overall 1-seed was no fluke once and for all, whereas New York seeks to keep the eastern half of the US alive and prevent the very real possibility of an all-Pacific finish. In perhaps the most momentous decision of this bracket, which will it be?

Eh, that match was true to those rivalries' respective nomination showings, and I doubt Winslow/Wake would have won very many matches anyways, so it's honestly fine. I just felt like commenting with something that was maybe unfair of me to comment, even though I'm still ruing Madeline/Badeline's draw.

I've also started appreciating that match more in retrospect, ever since I realized last night that those are the two rivalries depicted solely in black-and-white in this field. I don't know if that was just a coincidence on your part, but either way, well-played.

Minnesota was actually leading early, only to get completely swamped later on. The California we've seen these last two rounds has looked like quite a different beast from its previous prowess; perhaps it actually benefits from lower votals?

On the other side, New York vs. Hawaii started in spectacularly anticlimactic fashion, and while Hawaii did close the gap somewhat after that opening, it never really fought its way back into the match. Oddly enough, this is the exact same margin by which New York trumped Nevada two rounds prior, and it also makes Ontario look barely better than Manitoba.

Whatever the case might be, here we have two neighbors and joint hosts of large cities named Vancouver gunning for a near-certain finals berth. Quebec vs. New Brunswick

This unexpected duel of Canada's two heavily French-speaking neighbors might not be today's headliner match, but chances are it'll be close anyways. Only one of Quebec and New Brunswick can secure bragging rights as the winner of the odd division out; which will it be?

Here we have New York, the other preeminent high seed so far, against Hawaii, the preeminent low seed. Despite good previous showings from much of the Northeast US, New York is now fighting to keep its region alive - will it rise to the occasion, or will Hawaii move on with all the ease of a vacation?

Quite unlike the slightly less populous Manitoba, Hawaii is no underdog fresh off a pair of upsets in this particular match. Arguably the two most important modern bastions of left-leaning politics in the US face off in what feels something like a pre-destined match. Will Massachusetts suffer the same fate as its southwestern neighbor, or will it be the subdivision to finally leverage the fabled California antivotes?

These two both had comparatively tough paths to reach this match, and it wouldn't be hard to envision a scenario of Ohio vs. Alaska in its place. Instead, Minnesota is the final Midwestern state left; can it keep the region alive against a Western state with an exact inversion of its postal code?
