Sorry, I'm being a little over bearing. I guess MY favorite song is "Over the Hills and Far Away" from Led Zeppelin.
This song takes me to many places. The rolling way the music picks up and changes course. Those wonderfully thoughtful lyrics that leads me wondering if and when. This song does many things and over the years, the one thing this song hasn't done is gotten old or stale. You have to separate X's reception from how Square was doing as a company because there were clearly other things going on that factored into their financial decline. It sold slightly better than FFVIII worldwide (contra your claim that it sold worse) and significantly better than FFIX. So to call the game the start of a decline is neither very fair nor accurate.

There is 0 chance that FFX sold 6.6 million units world wide in it's opening year and you are likely pulling that from the last time FFX was counted for world wide shipping.
This is also taking into account the number of sales of FFX after it hit Sony's "Greatest Hits" catalogue, which sold great PS2 games for $20.

You have to recall, to be a commercial success selling an RPG in 2002, you only needed to sell 250k copies to meet the needs of investors. Now-a-days, anything that doesn't sell 2-3m units doesn't even break even anymore.

Also, FF9 and FF8 didn't meet the success that FF7 did. X was also in this boat. You might have perceived the game well, but it didn't sell enough units to quantify itself as being in the same selling league as FF8 or FF7, which started putting pressure on Square to become more profitable. This success was reached about 3 years later, after the merger with Dragon Quest 8.

I would agree with you more if the only major complaint about XIII were its linearity. I would say XIII's story is very dull and obtuse (largely, though not entirely, thanks to its storytelling method of dishing out pages and pages of lore with weird terminology), the cast is comparatively bland, the Paradigm system is significantly worse than the traditional turn-based and ATB systems, and the Crystarium is much more restrictive than the Sphere Grid and gives you far fewer postgame options. X, despite its linearity which was perceived as a step back from the worlds of previous games, had a lot more going for it.

No, he's right. X was the start of Square's downfall as not long after that, Square and Enix joined to make one company. Separately, both companies were floundering at the time.

Gamespy was starting to become so big, on the PS2, Gamespy started cropping up on multiplayer games as a server holder for games like Medal of Honor: Rising Sun and other EA games at that time.
They were just starting to make moves to get off of PC servers when Steam put them 6 feet into the dirt.

To be honest, what you're feeling is what I felt throughout the entire play through of FFX. Let it be known that X was my LAST Final Fantasy with none of the others after that being something that I could get into.

Too much talking, and after it was all said and done I wasn't emotionally invested in anyone and just wanted people to shut up already.
