Avoid the pure 2D games/arcade ports. The Saturn was better at it.

Majora's Mask is a sequel very tied to Ocarina of Time. You miss a lot of the bizarro effect of Majora's Mask if you haven't played OOT first. BOTW is more a complete game on its own.

Zelda was never particularly popular in Japan. I doubt it would be in a top 10 there.

It was a fine art choice for Shadow of the Colossus. For a Zelda game, not so much.

But why? You're supposed to feel isolated in both games. Why only Sony is allowed to do art choice?

Like, this gif seems like a very hilarious example of rubber band AI.

For context, the player was set up to always be in second, which causes first place (DK) to run slower than normal, and third place (Peach) to run faster than normal, causing them to constantly keep bouncing off of the player as if literally attached by rubber bands.

It only applies when you're close to an opponent. And what is wrong with an AI trying to smash you, you prefer a robotic AI going on a line? That's not what rubberband AI does. A rubberband AI will do very different times on the same race depending of the player behavior. That's not the case in SMK. It is in MK64.

hard to rank because it has by far the worst battle mode due to the 2p restriction, and versus is also hampered by 2p. but by far my favorite 1p modes. overall i have the most attachment/nostaliga for it and i've probably spent more time playing it than the others all combined so i kinda had to vote for it.

True and the objects aren't very useful in SMK except when you know exactly where the AI move. But that doesn't make the AI rubberband, you can crush the AI if you're good on any track. Unlike the first F-Zero.

64 sure has rubberband AI. But not SMK. In SMK AI has a fixed time you have to beat.

Bottom tier.

Bad controls/handling plus the fact that the game refuses to let you progress if you don't finish in a good enough position takes any fun I would have had out of the way. For as much flak the latter Mario Karts get, they at least control well enough to where I'm not just wrestling with the game AND the rubberband AI.

SMK doesn't have rubberband AI. It's a fair game. It's just challenging.
Modern kids don't know how to play SMK. You have to jump to drift early and attack the turn tightly.

The weird amosphere is better than the game itself. It feels like they glued parts of different games together. I heard the development was rushed so maybe it explains it.

Excellent ending to the story. I recommend playing the rest of the series now, particularly Streets of Rage 2.

And only the japanese version of SOR3. Western version is very broken with lot of enemies having way too much HP. It ruins the flow of the game.

Japanese videogames are very overrepresented compared to their actual space in the market. It's just that the audience of these games is very vocal on videogames forum websites.

It's not new. Many people did that before. I don't see how possible it is now with everything about everyone being digitized.

Hard to compare both. They focus on completely different aspect of videogames. Mass Effect is all about a good narrative, writing, voice acting, variety of roleplaying while BOTW is all about the variety of actions and physical interactivity you can have with the world but its narrative is very abstract. They're both great in their respective choice.

I used to like modern Naughty Dog games but I like them less now because how they're influential in the industry. I don't want an industry where quality is directly related to high budget and directors who don't care at all about creative game design, prefer working a lot on the directing of their cinematics and take the controller from my hands to tell me what he thinks.

Its one of the best RPGs ever made.

Xenoblade Chronicles is exactly what I expected from a sequel to Final Fantasy 12. To me it's the real Final Fantasy 13. It shouldn't be downplayed for being a Nintendo exclusive it's really an all time great JRPG.

Because we need to make a point about how Japanese we are.

Gamefaqs is a site focused on tips and secrets in videogames. Western videogames tend to have bigger budget than japanese videogames so they have to be more effective in their development. They don't "waste" time developing secret things and everything has to be shown to the player during the first walkthrough. So I guess that explains why this site favor japanese videogames. Because they tend to have more content not shown during the first walkthrough and secret content the player has to discover.

Xenoblade is doing well but I don't think it will win, Persona is much more mainstream.

So apparently, Square's best game the past decade is Dragon Quest 11. Lol no way.

As we can see, my pick has made it to round 4. Only time will tell if it makes it all the way. Also, Kojima has avoided a win once again, we'll see if he ever makes it.

This wait is lame, but only 5 days to go.

Dragon Quest is Enix, not Square. Sure they fused but Enix still kept some kind of independancy when they make their games. That's why their games are usually better than Square.

Persona beating GTA5... That's like saying a hammer is a better tool for plumbing than a toolbox full of tools.

None of GTA5 tools is good. Its gameplay may be diverse but is also incredibly bland and superficial.

Odyssey is more diverse with its game design ideas. Sunshine it too centered around the fludd and using it effectively to reach weird place. Sunshine was also focused on being a technical showcase with the camera that could go anywhere and all the realistic physics mechanics the game wanted to show. That wasn't very interesting game design wise. Meanwhile Odyssey is an encyclopedia of game design ideas, any sub level could be used to create an entire game. I prefer the Mario series taking that path instead of trying to be a technical showcase like Sunshine did.

There are more gameplay options in BOTW. The game is also very open with experiments with its physical engine.
Mario Odyssey is more a level design and game design ideas game. You can pick any sub level of this game, synthetize the rules of game and create an entire game based on it.

That was before the series became mainstream. Doesn't change the fact the series is hugely pushed by the nintendo fanbase. Sony probably bought the exclusive to push nintendo fanboys to buy a PS4, that was a smart marketing move. It's easier to imagine the Fire Emblem or Xenoblade fanbase playing Persona than the Uncharted/God of War fanbase.

Platinum is one of the few developers left who still make great action games with precise patterns and precise risk/rewards mechanics such as frame based parry, like From Software or Capcom. If you're into this stuff then get it.

Persona fanbase and Nintendo fanbase are pretty much the same sociologically.

Persona has a bigger and more dedicated fanbase. And it can get away with a lot of fan service and lazy commercial weaboo stuff other JRPG franchises can't.

It will be Mario All Star and that's it lol

My top 5 are SMT4/Apo, Etrian Odyssey 4/5, Rune Factory 4, Devil Survivor 2 and Culdcept Revolt, I guess I have bad taste.

Woke up checked the results.
The contest is officially over for me since I get both these matches wrong. At least I was on the leaderboard sometime which is a tradition for me in all these contests.
But does that means that RDR beats GTAV? Strange.
Also what is with XC? When it became so strong? I mean FE is a core franchise by Nintendo with like 10 characters in Smash and everyone knows it?

I picked Bloodborne as the division winner even if I voted for RE2 since I prefer this game.

In hindsight the open world of horizon serves little purpose

you're limited by the environment at every turn. nothing is interactive. the weather / time of day system doesn't change anything mechanically. its all there just to look pretty. Horizon is just another pretty good open world game in a generation full of them. its not really deviating from the cookie cutter formula in any way.

breath of the wild made the world itself an integral part of the game. thats a game that could never exist outside of an open world structure, because the way you interact with the world IS the main hook. that's the reason it stood out from all the generic "ubisoft game" open worlds. (which Horizon very much is....it's just a very well made "ubisoft game")

There is so much more gameplay possibilities with Link in BOTW than with Aloy in Horizon that it makes Horizon look like a lazy game. Game designers should be more free to implement gameplay elements in Sony's blockbusters. They're pretty but they feel empty to play. You can't even parry attacks.

From Software is probably the studio with the highest reputation right now. I would be surprised if one of their game didn't reach the final.

It's weird because it's considering actual kids are the first generation playing videogames. Several previous generations played videogames when they were kids and they didn't end like that by aging.

It's free advertising. It's like saying "look they want it so it must be good". Trails of Cold Steel didn't do that and it flopped badly compared to Persona 5 while being as good imo.
