literally every time i post, you're on my nuts like white on rice

I told you, I'd leave you alone since it's obvious this whole tiff is having an effect on you. But I also said if you came at me, I'd pushback. You're the one who jumped on my nuts tonight:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/3-poll-of-the-day/79100483?page=3

Again, everything I do to you is just meant as a reflection of yourself. I don't care about what happened a decade ago. I didn't come back to PotD to ignore you for months, and then decide I had a grudge and started trolling you. You're the only person who ever brings up past bullshit, SBA, and all this other stuff I could not care less about. You're the one who has held onto a low effort photoshop of me when I was a teenager for over a decade. So who is really the one holding the grudges?

I get you might want to save face after looking like a dolt with your whole conspiracy about me, but coming at me is a weird way of going about it. We've established in every thread we've done this in that you'll get laughed at, mocked, ridiculed, possibly suspended, and pitied, whereas the only thing that happens to me is you being yourself with the insults and me getting a good laugh (to be clear, not with you, at you).

You're mistaken if you think I care enough about you to hold a grudge. Sure, I don't like you, and you're easy to goad here, but I don't think about you much beyond when I see you post.

Let's look at what the actual definition of crybully is: " A person who engages in intimidation, harassment, or other abusive behaviour while claiming to be a victim."

Hmm. Who is the one here actually always crying that they're a victim after they get pushback for being an asshole to people? I haven't cried about being a victim of any kind here, but you're very fond of bringing up your "haters" and how much they "bully" you. Either put on your big boy pants and stop whining or go cry to your mum.

Just watched the new volume of Unsolved Mysteries. It was pretty good, but I felt the first volume was more stacked with compelling cases. Still a good set of mysteries though.

Currently catching up on the newest season of Fargo. This is one of my favorite shows still on the air.

Plus the last episode is this Sunday. Overall I've liked the show, but I definitely feel like it started running out of steam a bit after the third episode. It's still remained engaging and interesting throughout though.

started The Vow. Episode five tomorrow 10:05est. It is insane what people will do, what people will believe; and what people will do to other people and try to cover up. Sickening.

The Vow is fantastic and probably my favorite show currently airing right now. I was a little too stoned when watching episode 3 and it got me going down a pretty paranoid thought process. It was a bit of a mindfuck. The whole thing is fascinating and sickening.

Also going to watch the new episode of Lovecraft Country tonight. The show is okay, but not as good as I wanted it to be. Though the last episode was definitely a strong note and probably the best so far. To be fair, I felt exactly the same about the book: it was okay, but not as good as I wanted it to be.

I finished Infinity Train recently and that is a solid cartoon. In the vein of Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, Adventure Time, etc. in that it was an ongoing story, but unlike those, each season is a self-contained adventure with some character and minor plot overlap.

Lastly, I tried watching the debut episode of The Third Day, but it didn't quite grab me and I turned it off halfway through. I'll give it another chance soon.

IF you have not seen it the first season at least of West World was very good. I'm sure you have heard of Game of thrones, but True Blood was very good as well (books were over all better but still liked the series), Rome was great as well. So many good HBO series honestly. I think Deadwood might have been on HBO as well, although I never did finish it (both times I tried) nor did I see the recent reunion show.

I think...OZ ...was also on HBO, watched it as a group (me, my wife, best friend and his wife) along time ago and many of the cast members went on to be in Law and Order SVU and other shows....it's worth a shot if you like prison shows at all as well.

Oh I've seen a lot of what HBO has to offer, used to go to my friend's every Sunday to watch whatever was airing and watched a lot of other through less than honorable means when I was younger. I just recently moved, so it was time to get my own subscription. I've seen Deadwood, Game of Thrones, Westworld, every David Simon show, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and most the other major HBO shows and a lot of the miniseries from the last two decades. I saw the first season of True Blood and it wasn't my cup of tea. Oz has been on my list though, so I'll get to that one at some point!

I just got HBO Max, so I watched the first episode of Lovecraft Country (decent, but some plot points didn't have good establishment; I'll see how the rest of the series plays out). I also watched the first two seasons of Infinity Train. Great show! Definitely recommended if you're a fan of the newer story focused cartoons like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Over the Garden Wall.

as long as the wealthy can push to divide us along racial lines, we'll never realize the real problem is class and we'll fight amongst ourselves like we are rather than combine our efforts against them. fuck white privelege, its the line minorities were fed to keep Evil Whitey in their crosshairs. stop playing into it.

I never said all white people are well-off. I'm poor myself. And yeah, not every white person has benefited from the generational wealth that slavery and systemic racism has created, but we as white people also aren't hurt by that either. White privilege means that your life hasn't been made harder *because* you are white. You can still have a hard life.

I agree that class is a very important divide and that wealthy people try to perpetuate discord among the poor. But I don't think recognizing systemic racism creates division except with people who refuse to recognize it. A big part of modern anti-racism is intersectionality which includes wealth in its criteria. I grew up and lived in a very diverse area, and I've never felt like any minority has viewed me as the "Evil Whitey". *That* seems like a myth perpetuated by the media pushed to people who have little to no actual experience with racial diversity.

I don't think recognizing white privilege is about begging for forgiveness of slaveholders in the past. It's in recognizing that your skin color doesn't make life more difficult for you systemically. It's in recognizing that if you come from a generationally wealthy family, you likely are still directly benefiting from slavery and systemic racism. No one is asking you to genuflect for actions you didn't commit, only recognize how you indirectly benefited from those actions.

We've been trying to get a local all ages open in San Jose for years. We've got an ongoing fund for it and have had a few promising options in the past that never worked out. Right before I moved to Sierra Leone I organized my first show (half punk bands, half electronic musicians) and all the proceeds went to the fund. I know our main organizer is never going to give up on the goal of getting it open, and she's an amazing person, but man, getting a local all ages venue off the ground is not easy! If I was rich that would definitely be one of my top priorities as well.

I was pretty involved in the DIY/punk scene in the Bay Area, CA and have a lot of cool memories. Seeing G.L.O.S.S. in my home town was a particular highlight. As well as seeing Tony Hawk at an American Nightmare (more post-hardcore than hardcore, but w/e) show. One of my favorite punk show memories though was not in the Bay Area. I saw Trash Talk for free in NYC and it also happened to be an after party for two separate concerts that had happened earlier that night, Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean. They were both in the pit and the show was so wild people were climbing along the piping on the ceiling.

I used to go to local shows almost weekly, and I really miss that with this pandemic going on. The last show I went to was seeing my friend's punk band in LA, and the show also doubled as a drag queen exhibition and there were loads of cool and unique performers.

I just moved to Las Vegas yesterday and I have no idea if they have a local DIY/punk scene. I'm sure it's gotta exist in some capacity.

There is current direct evidence all over the place that it's not working. Now, linking the extreme cost of living increases to the increase in minimum wage is of course supposition. Perhaps they would have gone up anyway, but the fact of the matter is places where min wage increased drastically have had a much larger increase in cost of living than in the past, and in almost every situation, the cost of living increase has been far more severe and detrimental, then the bonus to the min wage (especially when you take into account the higher amount of taxes being paid on the additional income.

I live in the Bay Area and due to the tech industry and influx of techies the cost of living here exploded before minimum wage increases. The service industry is teetering on the brink because no one with a service job can afford to live here. A minimum wage is needed if these people aren't to be priced out.

I can see that that would eliminate the "finally, a turn-based JRPG!" sentiment that BD gave a lot of people when it first came out, since you would have had that itch scratched already. That said, Octopath's gameplay generally felt like Bravely Default Lite to me, with less depth to the combat and class systems and overall less strategic variety. It was still enjoyable, but I would say I like Bravely Default better in that regard.

I do enjoy a lot of the quality of life features included in Bravely Default. Turning off the encounter rate was a relieving mercy because, as I mentioned in the OP, I probably wouldn't have completed the game if it wasn't for that. I think more games should allow you to adjust difficulty at will.

adjl posted...
BD's story just baffles me. It started out alright. Nothing amazing, but certainly serviceable, and there seemed to be some interesting twists coming. But then those twists happened... and nothing else did. The rest of the story just consisted of ignoring all the revelations from the game's pivotal moment and repeating the first four chapters over and over again. It was like the producers read what the writers had up until that point, then got tired of reading, fired all of them, and just copy+pasted the first stuff a few times to fill out the rest of the game. It's easily one of the most egregious cases of wasted potential I've ever seen in a game's story, and I don't understand how they screwed it up as badly as they did. Granted, somebody also thought the Endless Eight arc of Haruhi season 2 was a good idea, so I guess there's precedent elsewhere for such poor judgement.

It had so much potential, but I feel like the game was executed in a way that really highlights its faults. With a plot involving parallel worlds there's a lot of directions you can take it, but as you mentioned... nothing really happens after a point. I also feel like working towards the "true" ending feels counterintuitive. Like, if you catch onto the obvious hints, going for an earlier ending makes so much more sense from a story perspective. But if you want the "true" ending you have to push through acting like what's right in your face isn't there.

I couldn't get into this book. Might be the worst book I've read in recent memory. There are just too many characters to be given anything but a superficial treatment in the 300 pages or so allotted to them. Personality development is very shallow, and they're all messed up of course. Is it too boring for a novel to feature a couple grounded, well-adjusted characters?

This shallowness is also found in the notion that this book is a great account of the "urban Indian." Nope, it isn't. Although it's true that most Native Americans live in cities and not Reservations, so many still have strong connections to the Rez: relatives are still there, growing up happened there, Reservation landscapes are essential to spirituality and identity. None of this is present in "There There." It's as though these people sprang into existence ex nihilo. They have little or no backstory. For an excellent "urban Indian" novel from a much, much better writer, read "The Hiawatha" by David Treuer.

Finally, the ending of "There There" is simply bizarre, even ridiculous (spoiler alert). Some of the characters try to rob a Powwow, and for no apparent reason one of them starts shooting another, who returns fire, and in the shootout nearly all of the characters are hit. Mr. Orange prefers coyness to closure and does not indicate who lives and who dies. What's the point?

I can agree with your first point to a degree. Character-wise they could all be developed a lot more. Personally I still greatly enjoyed the book both plot-wise and the characters, however shallowly developed most of them were.

I disagree somewhat with your second point though. As someone with Native ancestry who lives in the Bay Area, this novel hit particularly close to home. I haven't really felt a personal connection with a novel particularly like this before. I think I didn't need a lot of the characters developed further for the book to work for me because I know people like the characters, including me, and was probably projecting a bit of us onto them. I'll definitely check out The Hiawatha though! I haven't read a lot of Native fiction myself, so it's definitely something I want to explore more. I've got The Round House by Louise Erdrich coming up on my list soon.

Personally I liked the ending and the bit of bizarreness and ambiguity to it!

Pretty much. It would have been extremely unremarkable if it had released on the SNES in the mid-90's (well, aside from the graphics requiring some manner of wizardry to pull off on a SNES, but we'll assume they're downgraded accordingly for such a hypothetical), but in a world where turn-based JRPG's have been largely neglected (Squenix themselves didn't expect it to do well because they'd convinced themselves nobody wanted such games anymore), it scratched the itch very nicely. The story is thoroughly meh (mildly interesting until they seemingly gave up on writing anything new to fill the last half of the game), but the combat and class systems manage to both satisfy the yearning for a classic JRPG while also keeping things fresh and interesting such that it's not relying entirely on nostalgia.

I guess partly why I was so disappointed in this game is that I played it for the classic feel, but story is also a huge part of games for me (especially JRPGs) so I was let down. Also, I think playing Octopath Traveler first might have inhibited me from appreciating Bravely Default's classic elements more. Octopath Traveler had that classic feel, but also felt fresh and original, despite most the stories not being anything particularly special. That one wasn't a perfect game for me or anything, but I liked it more than Bravely Default. I know it's the same development team, so I'm still willing to give Bravely Default II a chance.

Thanks to those of you who explained why you liked this game (or why someone else might)! I have a clearer understanding of why some people enjoyed this one.

There There by Tommy Orange. It's a novel about modern Native people living in Oakland who all intersect at a big pow wow. I think coming from a sci-fi background you might find some things to appreciate, because it touches on the technological singularity and 3D printed guns and drones are part of the main plot. It was very moving and it's the best book I've read since The Three-Body Problem trilogy (that one is straight sci-fi but still highly recommended if it's one you haven't read).

I can see why someone might like those parts of the games. I guess the detractions just took away from me appreciating some of those aspectd. And yeah, I felt Ringabel was the only interesting character of the main cast myself.

Thats the problem. You saying I just never considered means that explaining might not really work. Many people actually like repetition. Especially since they can just play without really thinking... Like after a long day at work. People are going to like different things. Like food. You may not like a food because of reason A. But reason A is the reason someone else likes it..

How is it a problem if you gave that reasoning, and I was immediately able to see where you're coming from? Literally the opposite of "explaining might not really work" because I got it.

The title itself is definitely fine. But then you immediately start off trashing the game hard. Ive asked why people liked a certain game many times without immediately trashing it. And it can turn people off answering your question. Or even make some people defensive, like Far-Queue said...

All I did is list what I didn't like about the game, giving explanation for why I find it hard to see reedamble aspects of the game. I'm sure it comes across as "trashing it hard" if you're like really enamored with the game or something, but it doesn't invalidate any questions. If *you* get defensive that's on *you*. Getting defensive about how you feel about a video game is a little absurd. There's more important places to direct your ego.

Its not about not knowing your likes and dislikes, but rather liking something you normally wouldnt like. Ive play games where it checks off boxes where I wouldnt play it. But theres still something alluring about it. Like when you cant stop watching a really bad movie, or a train wreck... Eventually, I usually know what it is even if it take a while to find out, though. Though, its usually the battle system I found interesting. Haha.

I'm not sure what you're point is, because you're just exemplifying that it's not hard to analyze and know why you like something, even if it's not something you'd typically enjoy.

Because get this TC. Other people like the game.

Although I did find the second half a bit repetitious but not really all that much.

See below:

I think that's a lazy answer though. Just like I gave reasons why I disliked it, people can know why they like something. There's always a reason for something. LinkPizza and BlackScythe have given reasons where I can see why someone might interpret this game differently than I did.

I went to a bar where Jonny Jewel was DJing on Valentine's Day and I thought it would be really cool, but most people were only there for the actual bar. It was stupid because it was a tiny place and members of Chromatics and Glass Candy were just walking around and no one knew who they were. I left early because it was more like being at an overcrowded bar than seeing an artist perform.

About a week or two before that, I went to a large house show in LA where my friend's band was playing. Mostly punk bands. It was awesome! Lots of energy and there were also a bunch of drag performances between sets too.

Let's not get carried away here, Link ol' chap.

Yeah, I mean, you came into a topic about a game you have no experience with and avoided the question in the OP. It's classic trolling and not sure how Link could claim otherwise!

Yep. Thats how it is. Some people play for different reasons. Personally, I like certain games just for the battle system.

Yeah, I know different people play games for different reasons, I just never considered that the repetition would actually be something that they looked for in a game, and that the biggest detractor for me was a positive feature for others. Maybe that's a result in living in a society that values novelty and uniqueness. I've talked about this game in a few JRPG groups, but it's kinda like an insular echo chamber there (no one really likes this games in the groups I'm part of).

amen
its offensive to stupid people that cant explain why they like stuff

I think it shows a lack of self-awareness if you don't understand your own likes and dislikes. You don't need to be intelligent to think critically and analyze your likes and dislikes.

You honestly didnt seem like you were asking about the game. You seemed like you were just trashing it, possibly tot get a reaction... Thats what it seemed like. Ive heard many people actually ask question about games. You dont need to trash it to do so. It doesnt really make many people take you seriously...

All I did was ask a question and list why I didn't like that game so people could better understand my position. The title is literally a question, and I listed why I why I have a hard time understanding it. Yeah, I didn't like it, so my opinion is going to come across as trashing it. Doesn't mean other people can't like the game or that I'm not interested in why they did.

Bravely Second is better, then again I played the Japanese version of Bravely Default where it had a boring near endgame, the international version shortens that boring near endgame.

I have Bravely Second, but I haven't felt compelled to play it since I beat the first.

There is a distinct lack of classic RPG's being made today. There are some cheap RPG maker games on steam, yea, but it's not the same as a professional effort.

I guess it depends on what you consider classic and what platforms you're interested in. There's a plethora of classic feeling JRPGs on cell phones (which is a huge market in Japan). I get that's a turn-off to most people, and 3DS game feels more accesible to a Western audience.

Sometimes, you just cant explain. Its a pretty simple game, from what I remember. And sometimes, people like that. Or maybe they just likes the battle system. It could be anything, really. Somebody could like the exact stuff youll hate. And if they do, itll still be hard for you to understand...

Okay, if simplicity and repetition are the main draw for some people, then I could see why they might like this game. I guess I just play JRPGs for totally different reasons.

Far-Queue posted...
If you want to understand, maybe begin by asking what people like about the game and leave it at that. You start off trashing the game and listing what you dislike about it and that comes off as abrasive and puts people on their defense.

Don't try to play it like you're reaching out and looking for people to persuade you on your opinion. You're only saying you want to understand because I called you on your BS.

So you're upset because I didn't frame the question and my opinion in a way that protects your ego? Get over yourself dude. It's just a video game. I asked a legitimate question and listed what I didn't like about the game. I never said I was asking to be persuaded. Just trying to understand. Your weird hostility isn't accomplishing anything except making me think you've got some personal issues to work on.

You're asking why people liked a relatively classic jrpg when there is a distinct lack of those.

I don't know if I'd say there's a lack of classic JRPGs, and people can always play the actual classics, but I can see why would that "classic" feel would draw people in. That's why I first wanted to play it, especially since it based on classic Final Fantasy which is one of my favorite series. I just don't think it was well-executed.
