Honestly, I remember when watching Knives Out the first time, I hated when they not only reveal, but showed exactly how the old man died, I was like "Movie, what the actual fuck are you doing? You're literally taking the fun part of the 'who did it' genre away from the film." I'm glad that Rian was able to smartly play with it though, and my wife totally called the ending of the film.

Also, if you don't have any draconian modes active, the fighting is beyond easy and would probably be a part of why you aren't enjoying the combat. Unfortunately they don't let you set it to hard in the middle of a playthrough :/

I don't know, I don't think a hard mode would even make me invested in the game. I honestly wouldn't mind generic gameplay if the story or characters were at least good. The Last of Us plays like ass and The Telltale Walking Dead games are literally point of click games, but the story and characters kept me interested enough to play until the very end. I need something at least to cling onto to finish, otherwise I feel like it's a chore to get through. Sylvando is a lot of fun, but unfortunately I don't think he's enough (and I'm not sure what he can do) to carry the characters and story. The only real fun I really had in the game was the black smith minigame because it was something I don't think any other JRPG has done before (and I was addicted to try to get perfects on all of the crafts). Then the minigame gave you more tools which opened up more options, the only reason I don't spend more time on it is because I have to farm (or buy) parts lol.

TendoDRM posted...
He also had no idea it was 80+ hours long. I think he just had no idea what he was getting into, bought it based on hype alone.

Yeah, I went to another forum and asked people to list their favorite current JRPG's and the consistent top 3 was Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5, and Octopath Traveler. I played both Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler to the very end (though Octopath Traveler had a real bitch of an ending boss, talk about a major spike in difficulty) because they both had at least something that kept me interested in the game. Dragon Quest XI is the only game I played so far that I couldn't understand why people liked it, but I guess it does have the old school JRPG nostalgia feel to it, so that does answer my question. Next time I'll ask people why they like the JRPG on their list, which I admit is fully my fault for not asking and just blindly buying.

AntiNoob posted...
What? Tales of symphonia is a cliche game even until its ending

I didn't think so. I think it was the first JRPG I played that subverted the "chosen one" trope really well with the twist that helped spiced the story up and made me wanna know what will happen next.

I love DQ XI but if you aren't enjoying it now you won't enjoy more of it, maybe you should just give up on it.

I'll admit, the reason I put so many hours into it because I thought it would be like Tales of Symphonia where the game doesn't get good until they reveal the other world tethealla, in which the game's story really does pick up and stops being cliched. But yeah you're right, I think I did a good enough job trying to get through the game. Next time I'll do more research before buying a game instead of giving into hype.

I'm 28 hours into this game and I'm really trying my best to finish this game but holy moly does this game feel so uninspiring in everything. From the combat system, to the story being a giant cliched, the music being too jumpy and repetitive, dull characters, terrible dialogue, and boring side quests. The only good thing about this game is the graphics, Slyvando (probably the only fun character in the cast, with Raab and Veronica because they seem to be only characters with any personality), and the forging mini game. At least with Octopath Traveler and Persona 5, while not perfect games, does more to engage me with the game than Dragon Quest XI can ever thanks to their excellent battle system that constantly keeps me in their toes and always trying to find ways to change up the gameplay. I'm honestly trying to find out why Dragon Quest XI gets so much praise when it been done before, except so much better in other JRPG's.

I haven't seen Knives Out but I have heard countless praise for it. Assuming it really is good, that proves that Rian must have just wanted to fuck up Star Wars on purpose. if he is truly capable of making good movies. or he only can make good movies when it's an original story of his own creation and doesn't know how to insert a chapter into an existing franchise

Rian Johnson is all about subverting expectations which he does right in Knives Out. The only reason it didn't work in The Last Jedi is because most of the things he "subverted" all ended up in a dead end. Ray's parents? Nobodies. Captain Phasma? A joke. Snoke? Wasted potential. and so much more. It's also a reason why Rise of Skywalker suffered as well, there was almost nothing to play off from.

But yeah enough of Star Wars, the thing I love most about Knives Out is that you can tell the majority of the Actors are having the time of their life playing their characters, especially Daniel Craig. There was obvious love put into this movie which makes it a whole lot of fun to watch.
