You're expecting Pete and Amy to stay in and to be competing against a billionaire you eviscerated on TV, someone with no cash or campaign infrastructure -- and Bernie. She didn't say she was going to win, she's expecting to go into a brokered convention just like Bernie and all of his supporters were at the time. The argument he had was just that his (expected) plurality should be treated as a majority, but there are like 6 people with delegates still in the race and nobody expects it to be.

I absolutely didn't believe it, but it's easy for me to put myself into their shoes and thinking it makes sense. Part of their strategy was explicitly a big investment in staff in more places than her competition (except Bloomberg). I don't need to assume bad faith, though I'm not saying it's impossible

What if they legitimately believed the memo they sent out saying they were in a strong position on super Tuesday and just have to actually reassess that now?

They sent that memo out before the moderates dropped out, so it's not a stretch to say things went a different direction than they expected even before Tuesday.

To be fair no candidate is passing any of their plans through the GOP controlled senate but everyone is acting like whoever wins this race will somehow pass all the things they promise even though no president ever does that even when they control all three houses. I actually don't mind that a lot of voters don't care about policy, because it really doesn't matter much in most cases (even if that's likely not why they don't care about policy).

I don't think Biden could pass a capital gains tax under a Democratic Senate and I'm almost certain he wouldn't even try

The real issue is just that Bernie didn't win many states. Of the 4 he won last night, 1 of them definitely won't go blue and two of them definitely will. one of them is a swing state

I just told you I thought his theory of change was BS from the start. Bernie was the frontrunner because of a divided field, not because he was encouraging new voters. I don't think the Democratic candidates in general have shown much difference in match ups against Trump and the polling this far out is unlikely to be predictive of November anyway.

What I'm saying is that they made a tactical or strategic error in underestimating 'the establishment.' Bernie was clearly anticipating Pete and Amy staying in and his campaign wasn't ready for them endorsing Biden before Super Tuesday. It may be that there was never anything he could have done, but the fact that (just for example) his campaign manager who used to work for Reid had no idea about Reid endorsing Biden until after it happened is indicative of the kind of blind spot they had

I don't think socialism has anything to do with it, and I never bought Bernie's argument about turnout. Obama called Pete and Reid called Amy and then everyone and their mother threw in for Biden. That makes it a much different race than it was before; Bernie's people were totally caught off guard by it.

I suppose you could argue that Bernie's campaign has done a bad job of positioning their candidate for the race, but a big part of that was the expectation that Super Tuesday would be contested across multiple candidates. I've seen some people on twitter criticize Bernie for not trying to go on a better charm offensive to get moderate voters, but it made sense in the context of the race as it stood 72 hours ago. And the big thing that changed in that time was the moderates dropping out

my understanding is that sanders is well organized for a long campaign, again. and that biden is not. but, conversely, biden barely spent anything in CA and won 24% of the vote there, while sanders spent quite a lot and won 33%

One issue is that Biden won places he didn't even try to win (with respect to organizational investment in the state) whereas Bernie did not win the places he tried to win, like MN and MA, and even underperformed in Vermont

I think the other thing is Biden, from a casual glance, is overperforming in delegates even relative to his pretty convincing popular vote wins. E.g., Biden is getting 66% of the delegates out of Virginia to Bernie's 31% (Bloomberg has 2) so they're both overperforming their popular voteshares of 53% and 23%, but Biden by moreso. They're still counting in NC, but right now Biden has 56 to 26 on a 43% to 24% victory. In Minnesota, Biden and Bernie are both slightly underperforming in delegates relative to their popular voteshare, but Bernie by moreso.

I expect Bernie will overperform in California but they might not have their results in until after next week's votes.

It's a pretty bleak result for Sanders for sure.
