Lansing, Mich. (WLNS) Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered 10 million Michigan residents to stay home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Her announcement came Monday morning following a weekend of speculation that an order was imminent.

Effective at 12:01 am on March 24, 2020, for at least the next three weeks, individuals may only leave their home or place of residence under very limited circumstances, and they must adhere to social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when they do so, including remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individuals household to the extent feasible under the circumstances.
Gov. Whitmer Executive Order

She emphasized that critical businesses and services will remain open.

Grocery stores will remain open and Whitmer cautioned people to not panic or hoard.

>>>Full list of critical businesses that will remain open

Here is a partial list:

For purposes of this order, critical infrastructure workers are those workers described by the Director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in his guidance of March 19, 2020 on the COVID-19 response (available here). Such workers include some workers in each of the following sectors:

(a) Health care and public health.

(b) Law enforcement, public safety, and first responders.

(c) Food and agriculture.

(d) Energy.

(e) Water and wastewater.

(f) Transportation and logistics.

(g) Public works.

(h) Communications and information technology, including news media.

(i) Other community-based government operations and essential functions.

(j) Critical manufacturing.

(k) Hazardous materials.

(l) Financial services.

(m) Chemical supply chains and safety.

(n) Defense industrial base.

Now Michigan joins the list of at least ten states where shelter in place orders have been issued.

On Sunday Ohio joined similar governors efforts in California, Illinois and New York to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

On Sunday state health officials reported 1035 cases of COVID-19 in the state of Michigan, with nine deaths.

https://www.wilx.com/content/news/FDA-approves-new-test-that-can-detect-coronavirus-in-45-minutes-569004501.html

(CNN/AP) - The first rapid diagnostic test for COVID-19 has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It can detect the virus in approximately 45 minutes.
The first federally-assisted drive thru testing site for coronavirus in New Jersey became overwhelmed and quickly reached capacity when it opened Friday, March 20, 2020. (Source: News 12 New Jersey/CNN)

California-based Cepheid, which makes the test, says it can start shipping next week.

Clinicians say faster testing will help alleviate some of the pressure on hospital resources. The new test is a significant advancement because some patients have complained it took them days to get results.

However, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said Saturday in a White House press briefing that not every single person in the U.S. needs to get tested.

When you go in and get tested, you are consuming personal protective equipment, masks and gowns. Those are high priority for the health care workers who are taking care of people who have coronavirus disease, Fauci said.

Health officials in New York City and Los Angeles are now recommending doctors avoid testing patients, except in cases where the results would significantly change treatment.

Efforts to tally U.S. testing numbers have been stymied by the fragmented nature of the country's health system, involving federal, state and local efforts and the private sector.

This week, members of Trump's coronavirus task force gave the most comprehensive figures on testing yet. Vice President Mike Pence said Saturday that about 195,000 people in the U.S. have been screened for the virus, a number that does not include additional tests from county hospitals or health care labs.

Most U.S. labs can process fewer than 100 patient samples per day. Last week, the FDA approved the first coronavirus tests for high-volume laboratory systems, which are capable of processing thousands per day. Thats expected to quickly increase U.S. testing capacity.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-amazon-com-exclusi-idUSKBN2142IM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is suspending sellers from sending non-essential products to its U.S. and U.K. warehouses until April 5 in the latest move to free up inventory space for much-needed supplies that are in shortage as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

In a note sent to sellers on Tuesday, Amazon said it is seeing increasing online shopping demand from consumers. As its household staples and medical supplies are running out of stock, it will prioritize certain categories in order to quickly receive, restock, and ship these products to customers.

Amazon defined five categories as essential products that can continue shipping, including Baby Product, Health & Household, Beauty & Personal Care, Grocery, Industrial & Scientific, Pet Supplies.

The move follows Amazons announcement it will hire 100,000 workers for its warehouses on Monday, as the Seattle-based giant is trying to meet growing online shopping need from people who stay home amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Third-party sellers account for over half of the sales on Amazon. Amazon has been courting sellers to use its own fulfillment system, enabling many of them with faster delivery without the risks of sitting on inventories.

It is especially popular for sellers who use a dropping shipping method, meaning sellers import products from manufacturers in countries including China and directly send them to an Amazon warehouse. Amazon earns fees from managing the storage and delivery process.

Sellers supplying products that are deemed non-essential could see their products run out of stock and they will be unable to restock as a result of the measure. Still, they can use other fulfillment methods to directly mail products to customers.

Amazon did not immediately replied to request for comment.

Governor Whitmer Signs Executive Order Temporarily Closing Bars, Theaters, Casinos, and Other Public Spaces; Limiting Restaurants to Delivery and Carry-Out Orders

LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-9, which temporarily closes theaters, bars, and casinos, and limits restaurants to carry-out and delivery orders.

Under Executive Order 2020-9, effective Monday, March 16 at 3:00pm, the following places of public accommodation will be closed; restaurants, cafes, coffee houses, bars, taverns, brewpubs, distilleries, clubs, movie theaters, indoor and outdoor performance venues, gymnasiums, fitness centers, recreation centers, indoor sports facilities, indoor exercise facilities, exercise studios, spas, and casinos.

This order does not restrict a place of business from offering food and beverage using delivery service, window service, walk-up service, drive-through service, or drive-up service. Places of public accommodation are encouraged to do so and use precautions to mitigate potential transmission of COVID-19, including social distancing. Restaurants may allow five people inside at a time to pick up orders, so long as they stay six feet apart from each other.

These restrictions do not apply to the following locations: office buildings, grocery stores, markets, food pantries, pharmacies, drug stores, and providers of medical equipment and supplies, health care facilities, residential care facilities, congregate care facilities, and juvenile justice facilities, warehouse and distribution centers, and industrial and manufacturing facilities.

Order restrictions will remain in place until Monday, March 30 at 11:59 pm.

This disease is a challenge unlike any weve experienced in our lifetimes, said Governor Whitmer. Fighting it will cause significant but temporary changes to our daily lives. By practicing social distancing and taking aggressive action now, the state is working to mitigate the spread of coronavirus so we reduce the risk that our health care system becomes overwhelmed. This is about saving lives. Michiganders are tough and we are going to get through this, but it will require everyone doing their part. That means making smart choices and not putting yourself or others at risk by going out in public unless it is absolutely necessary.

We need to move quickly to slow the spread of the virus and protect public health, said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. I realize these actions will present temporary changes to the way we live, but they are critical to help ensure our health care system is prepared to treat those who need the most urgent medical care.

This crisis will require business and labor working together to ensure that we are putting the best interests of Michiganders first in order to protect public health, said Jeff Donofrio, Director of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. We understand that these decisions will impact the way we do business, but the decisions we make now will allow us to get our economy back on track sooner rather than later. We are putting measures in place to help protect the employers, employees, and individuals that will be impacted.

To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Governors across the United States have begun implementing similar measures in their states, including Jay Inslee (D-WA), Charlie Baker (R-MA), and Tom Wolf (D-PA).

Patients with confirmed infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath

The best prevention for viruses, such as influenza, the common cold or COVID-19 is to:

If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19, call your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, call the nearest hospital.
Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If not available, use hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid contact with people who are sick.
If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
Replace handshakes with elbow bumps.
Stay at least 6 feet away from others when in a public setting.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/coronavirus/ct-ent-late-night-shows-suspended-20200313-jyz5hk4bk5dmrihfb6xfnd5lfa-story.html

NBC and CBS said they would suspend production of its two flagship late-night programs for a period of at least two weeks, the latest bit of fallout around wee-hours TV related to the spread of coronavirus.

Starting Friday, "The Tonight Show" and "Late Night" will suspend production through a previously planned hiatus, which had been scheduled for the week of March 23. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and make decisions about future shows as we get closer to the start of production," NBC said in a statement. Meanwhile, CBS' said "Late Show" would forgo production of three original broadcast scheduled for next week and would instead move into a hiatus through March 30. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely," CBS said.

All the shows had planned to start broadcasting Monday without a live, in-studio audience, a nod to the new requirements of life under the spread of coronavirus, with BIll Mahers program on HBO just joining the others. All of the nations late-night programs had made similar decisions, which means every national late-night program will proceed without one of the formats bedrock elements - a live crowd that can react to all the jokes and sketches, and even influence the hosts actions and tone over the course of a segment or a night.

"Tonight" will tape an original episode for Thursday night without an audience, NBC said. Guests include Dr. Oz, Mandy Moore, and Dane DeHaan. "Late Night with Seth Meyers" will air an encore tonight, but post an original "Closer Look" segment - one of the show's signature features - for digital consumption. The show had previously booked actors John Krasinski and Regina Hall as well as Bones UK for Thursday's broadcast.

The lack of audience can change the shows' energy. On Wednesday night, Samantha Bee held forth without a full audience on TBS' "Full Frontal," the first of the programs to broadcast without a studio crowd. With only a handful of her own staff in the studio, she seemed looser, laughing at different points in the show's various segments - almost as if she was just trying out jokes on her friends. It made for a more relaxed presentation, one in which the show may not be everything, but at least it could go on.

Saturday Night Live, which depends on the reactions of its audience to help guide the program, is on hiatus until March 28. No decision about having a live studio audience has been announced.
