I just feel like there is some miscommunication. Apparently six years ago he thought I took my mother's side and he resents me for that. I tried explaining this was not the case but he doesn't believe me. I failed to communicate this with him. Or he fails to understand.
There isn't. What's going on here is mismatch between your wants and needs and what reality has provided you. You don't want a relationship with your father, you want a relationship with a version of your father who would actually play the part. You want that void in your life filled. But it isn't going to be, because the man who is your father isn't a good person and doesn't want to be your dad. That has nothing to do with you, and it isn't anything you can fix.

Does the guy by any chance seem to have fake emotions and a bizarrely high opinion of himself? I'm getting a Narcissistic Personality Disorder vibe from this weird back and forth about the SUV and this stuff about nobody helping him. Look up NPD if you don't know what it is, and if he has more than a couple of the traits, cut him off right now and don't look back. The horror of being tangled up with someone with has NPD and has set their sights on you can't be overstated. Until you've had it happen to you, you can't know how bad it is. It'll be bad for you, bad for your future wife, and bad for your future children.

Chrollo might stand a chance because of all of the powers he has collected in his book, but everyone else would die horribly. Netero represented peak or near peak physical strength through training an Nen, and the most he could do was make the King feel pain. Characters with a lot of raw power like Feitan won't be able to do anything. Characters like Hisoka that have utility abilities also won't be able to do anything because they lack the raw power to be able to damage the King. Ilumi wouldn't be able to do anything either because his abilities require him to be able to puncture the target with a needle (Netero couldn't even scratch him, and he was all about pure power). Even if he did manage to pierce the King, it's unknown whether a target with super high levels of Nen might be able to ignore manipulation.

The death penalty is gross. The government shouldn't have the right to execute people. It has already been pointed out many times that that life in prison is cheaper than the death penalty. The idea that the appeals process should be cut down, and the wait time for executions lessened, ignores the reality of the American "justice" system. The idea that DNA evidence and ubiquitous surveillance somehow means that our justice system has gotten more efficient and fairer is naive.

Evidence and reason don't have to mean a thing in the face of crooked cops, prosecutors, and judges and a "tough on crime" stance that pushes an already burdened court system to process large volumes of people as quickly as possible. For God's sake, there have been people who spent years in jail whose trial hinged on bite marks on a fucking sandwich (and later turned out to be innocent, by the way). This probably doesn't happen in the majority of cases, but the people who get railroaded absolutely have the right to try to be heard, and they shouldn't have to die to satisfy pointless blood lust.

The man from the article doesn't seem to have been innocent, but even then, it isn't cut and dried. He killed people on the outside, but they he saved some inside the prison. He did kill another inmate, true. Would it matter what they were in prison for? Would you hold that murder against him if the person he killed was another murderer? What if the his victim in prison was a child molester? The guy's life wasn't necessarily black and white, and I don't think you can fairly say that the world is better off with him dead. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I stand by it.

So, God's plan to kill these two men was to have their murderer first kill someone else so he could get sentenced to life in prison at the same facility?

Sounds like he should be rewarded.
Rewarded? For murdering more people? You do realize he was originally sent to prison for killing someone right? He may well have decided to kill these two so he'd find the result of satisfying his murderous impulses easier to live with or so that fellow inmates would find it socially acceptable. The man was already serving a life sentence, and I don't think California has the death penalty. Not much more can happen to him unless he makes enemies.

It goes without saying that both victims were perpetrators of horrible crimes (or at least, a judge or jury thought so). But you don't just get to kill people who are evil. And if you are a fan of the idea of making people suffer, then these two got off light. Being beaten to death with a cane would be horrible, but it would be quick. A long life in a shitty US prison with no real possibility of ever leaving would have been much, much worse.

There wasn't a serious decline until Ori showed up. Did you give up on the show too soon? Your comments would honestly apply more to Atlantis than SG-1.

Houdini has a steep learning curve and some limitations in the free Apprentice version, but you can create really awesome effects. Houdini also supports procedural modeling, which is a really neat way of building models that allows you full control and editing at any point in the creative process. It's hard to learn though.

Focus on local government if you want to make a difference.
Gerrymandering is making positive change in local governments difficult for folks too. I live in a heavily gerrymandered state, and more and more Republicans are actually voting Democrat because of extreme dissatisfaction with the status quo. Gerrymandering sucks because, even if it is "your" party has a death grip on power, they stop caring about what you think as a voter even if you are both on the same side.

I vote pure Democrat in my state to counter the Republican gerrymandering, but once the maps are redrawn (please God save us), I'd be happy to vote for a decent Republican with good ideas. Every 4 years, I always take a long look at both presidential candidates (and some of the third party candidates, honestly) and vote for who I think will do the best job. I seriously considered John McCain when he was running, but I decided against him because I was afraid his advanced age might mean Sarah Palin would have become president in his place at some point during his term.

I hope at some point in the future we move on from hyperpartisan bullshit and find some common ground. Currently, Democrats and Republicans only reach across the aisle when they intend to bend the American populace over.

What I hate most is the lack of critical thinking, which is in turn combined with absolutely certainty of their position. After college, it seems like most people's brains deteriorate in some sense. It doesn't matter how big or small the thing is, most people can't think clearly about anything, instantly form an opinion about whatever is going on, and argue to the death about being right.

It doesn't have to be about politics or anything controversial. I once got into an argument with a woman over Captain Crunch. She was sure there was only one flavor, and I had an ad for cereal on hand. She insisted the other cereals clearly labeled "Captain Crunch" actually weren't because it only comes in peanut butter flavor and that I was trying to trick her. I've met a lot of people that seemingly can't learn new skills because they can't thunk about things and confront the unknown, all while thinking they already understand what they are doing and it's everything else's fault nothing is working.

I saw some people in college like this, but it seems to get much worse by middle age.

College is probably the best time in your life to create deep friendships. It gets so much harder when you are older. If you find yourself unable to make friends, take inventory:
  1. Are you negative all the time? Negativity pushes people away quickly.
  2. How are your social skills? If you come across as awkward or desperate for attention, that's a huge turn off even if you are a nice guy. Everyone is kind of awkward at your age, but try and beef up your social awareness.
  3. Are you engaged in clubs and outside activities? Class is fine for basic conversations and seeing people, but you need to go further to build actual relationships with people.
  4. Your expectations might not be realistic. It's normal in life for friends to grow apart. I don't know your exact age, but by the time you graduate, you'll have probably lost contact with everyone you used to know in high school aside from a good buddy or two. Later on when you get a career going, you'll make friends in a city and eventually leave them behind.
  5. Your expectations might not be realistic #2. Even when you have a good friend, unless they live close by, you won't see or hear from them all the time. They are your friend, not your wife or girlfriend.

Why do republicans like spying on their citizens so much
I think it's because the Republican Party as a whole tries to be tough on crime. The idea is that if you aren't doing anything wrong, you should be fine with the police and government knowing what you are doing without a warrant. Never mind the fact that this is unconstitutional, ignores police corruption, ignores huge failings of our justice system, and is a complete double standard. If you are a Republican lawmaker or official, you deserve protection no matter what you've done. See Roy Moore and Dennis Haster as examples.

It's no an exclusively American problem. Australia's spying legislation doesn't allow it to be used against the government for corruption investigations, and the British version explicitly excludes lawmakers from being spied on. Rules for thee and not for me.

As per usual the govt thinks we're all a bunch of fucking dumbasses to believe this. Sad part is most of us are and that's why we keep letting this shit continue happening without opposition.
The bill is heavily cloaked in "think of the children language". That deceives plenty of the public (especially if the media runs with it), and it increases the chances of it passing the House even though it shouldn't.

bover_87 posted...
The good news is I don't see it passing the House. Godawful bill though.
Don't be so sure. Bills that claim to help children even if they have nothing to do with children, can be hard to oppose. If Graham has backing in the Senate, they may push that narrative that Democrats are supporting the harm of children and lawlessness. The bill was written by both a Democrat and a Republican, and has already begun circulating in the House.

Graham told tech companies they would impose their will on them within a year if they didn't shape up. This seems a little too soon and a little too grandiose. He may not intend for this to actually pass. It may just be muscle flexing to bring tech companies to the table and soften them up. Republican lawmakers may support Trump publicly, but after the impeachment trial and the hideously stupid defense Trump's team put up, they may be nervous about giving the Executive Branch so much power in an election year. I also don't know how popular Barr is with lawmakers either. And then there is the fact that other Republicans have their own ideas about how to "fix" Section 230, so there may be compeittion in this space.

Tech companies supported FOSTA, which was garbage, because if it was enforced it would make it harder for small time companies to compete. This is way too strict and vague, and could make the people running companies and working at them criminally liable no matter the size. I don't think Google, Apple, or Facebook want a single unelected official to be able to change the rules of the internet on a whim. It would be bad for business.

So there is reason to hope this will die without ever getting a vote, that it will die in the House or Senate with a vote, or that it would be struck down or significantly narrowed by our Supreme Court (it's so bad even Roberts couldn't find a reason not to call it unconstiutional). But the fact that this is even being tried is horrifying.

Still don't know why they didn't go after Trump for legit reasons, like why his kids are in the administration and making millions. But instead they go after him with a phone call that doesn't amount to anything of substance.
I wondered about that too, but I think it was a tough call. Under Barr, the DOJ killed the Mueller report and prevented Mueller himself from speaking out against the President despite how damning what they uncovered actually was. Thanks to Fox news and other conservative media outlets, a large chunk of Americans never even heard that they found anything at all.

Making money off of the presidency the way Trump and his family has done is wrong, but would most Americans know that? Or care, given that it had been going on the entire time? The phone call was blatantly illegal, was seen by many people, occurred recently, and had all kinds of people in and around the administration up in arms. That made it the best choice they could realistically make. If you watched something other than Fox News while the House was deliberating on impeachment, you would have seen a staggering number of credible witnesses and evidence. If you watched conservative media, you were told the House had nothing. When something uncomfortable came up during the Senate trial, they just didn't show it. And the Senate won't call any witnesses or allow more evidence to be presented, so now there won't be anything to see.

There is no winning.
