10% is a pretty big difference, especially when you consider the population demographics of the United States. Only 8% of black people murdered in 2018 were murdered by white people and white people make up 76.5% of the population. Black people only make up 13.4% of the population yet we accounted for 88.9% of black people murdered, and 15.5% of white people murdered.

It should not be used as a cudgel, as you say, but it needs to at least be discussed. Black-on-black violence is a much, much larger problem than police-on-black or white-on-black violence. The argument could be made that systemic racism, i.e. the man keeping us down, is a partial cause of that but all that does is deflect responsibility, as some people in this topic have mentioned.

The thing with black perps on black victims is that the perps are charged, arrested and prosecuted.

In a lot of these viral instances of police brutality against black people, the cops would still be on the job if it weren't for camera phones. Even in the event of camera recordings we have to sit and wonder if these cops will be held accountable.

Because people like to gaslight, deflect and deny, the go-to playbook whenever racial disparity is brought up. There was a large segment of this country that thought police brutality wasn't a thing in the 60s, the 60s, until news crews caught footage of popice beating protestors and having their dogs bite on civil rights protestors.

Somebody can believe that the police need reforming and not see a race issue. You can show them it's a societal issue and that a police can get away with killing anyone who's unarmed

Any reform that doesn't address the racial issue in law enforcement is a waste of time. The FBI had a report that white supremacists have been infiltrating law enforcement for years, hell they could have asked any black or brown person about that because they've been in there since the beginning.

Black people have been saying the same damn thing about disparate policing for decades, for generation after generation. The system wasn't generated for us, it was built to keep us in check. If people are going to be turned off by the focus on race then they aren't really there for police reform, the two are intertwined.

It sucks when anyone is a victim of police brutality and misconduct, unarmed white people get caught up in it too. There is racial bias in policing and white people can be victims of police brutality. Both things can be true, that's why reform is necessary.

There are bad officers; there are racist officers. There a people wearing badges work physically unfit for duty that they may have a heart attack while Im typing this.

But you are not conditioned, in any way, to be hyper-aggressive or to disproportionately target black folks. It is in no curriculum, no manual, no unwritten code.

I do not doubt that some departments, more than others, have been infiltrated by racists or power-hungry shitbags who want to treat others as subhuman.

I know that needs to be fixed. However, it is not systemic corruption. You need to look at this issue on departmental levels; NYPD and LAPD operate differently than any other agency in the US. Dallas Fort-Worth, different operations.

Its too complex of an issue and too disconnected of a system to say, hey, these institutions are inherently racist.

These institutions are manned by people that are raised in this society, they are not immune to the effects of a society that has operated on a level of anti-blackness since time immemorial. They might not be specifically trained to be hyper-aggressive or disproportionately target black folks, but that doesn't say that aren't carrying their personal or unconscious bias with them.

Police departments have been infiltrated by racists since the beginning, we didn't need the FBI report to tell us that but it was nice to have it on paper though. Generation after generation of black people have said the same thing about policing. It is definitely an institutional problem.

I can kind of see it both ways. Police injustice is a major social issue, so there's no particular reason a group can't make that their main cause. Proportionally, police related deaths are an infinitesimal amount compared to the overall deaths, so the proportional reaction can be seen as being off.

It's not just deaths by police, it's police misconduct in general. This has been going on for generations against black people in this country.
