I mean its kind of the same for us. When we roll dice it isnt a TRULY RANDOM result. Based on the starting position of the dice, the force with which they are thrown, and the dimensions and texture of the throwing surface, you could in theory predict the result.

Its just impossible for us to calculate all that live and in person

I believe that's the goal but I don't think society does. The whole "dignity of work" and tying jobs/employment/work to human value that has been drilled into us as a society for decades upon decades and are just accepted without question by most people mean that such a development is going to make things much worse before they get better.

Good question. Intuitively I would say the soul is alive before it enters the body but thinking about it, that is probably theologically unsound. I know Christian theology makes a big deal about the resurrection including a physical body. So probably yes, the combination of soul and body is needed for true life.

Jaykl, consider the question from the point of view who believes a human attains life when the soul enters the body. Under this model, whether a cell is physically "alive" is irrelevant - no individual cell, other than maybe the first, is alive in the sense of hosting a soul. A collection of cells can though. But they can also just be cells without a soul in which case they are not what we would call alive.

Is the soul alive before it enters the body?

If not, then neither the soul nor the cells define what life is, but rather the combination of the two?

because it's abortion and the line between 'clump of cells' and 'human' varies depending on where you fall on the issue. i mean i don't think you two disagree on this aspect now but the sentence example i gave earlier is probably how it was thought of, the "it's not really alive" people who realistically mean "human" as opposed to any living existence.
