Joker was good but should be nowhere near the top of that list. Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood are all stronger films than the Joker.

I do feel the collective wisdom pressure would be to lower the rankings of things like "Joker", "1917", and "Ford v Ferrari" and put "Marriage Story" much higher, but if I did that wouldn't be honest to how I felt.

Joker, for me, was just the most successful/satisfying at being a powerful movie I connected with.

This year was a better year than last year for BP, there were a few last year that I probably didn't like or worse, this year I at least probably liked all the movies (with maybe 1 exception):

My ranking:

  1. Joker
  2. 1917
  3. Ford v Ferrari
  4. Jojo Rabbit
  5. The Irishman
  6. Marriage Story
  7. Little Women*
  8. Parasite*
  9. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood
The Irishman/Marriage Story are kind of close.

Little Women/Parasite are effectively tied. My issue is that Parasite is more compelling, more interestingly directed, better editing/visual storytelling, but ultimately it's far more unpleasant. And for me the unpleasantness isn't well enough earned. IMO

To put it this way, I think Parasite is a better crafted film, but I think I liked Little Women more.

"Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood" may have had my expectations held against it, because it and Joker were the only 2 movies from this list I saw in theaters, but it just left me feeling very unsatisfied in the plot department.

From last year I still haven't seen "The Favourite" but omitting that I'd say at least 2 of the BP nominees from last year (Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody) were worse than all of these and 3 of them (I couldn't get invested in Roma) I liked less than all of these.

Because it's not very good.

Like it's directed well, but Sandler is only like 80% good actor and 20% of the time he's just being his normal self. I feel like people grade him on way too much of a curve. Lots of moments he's just doing ok but not bringing any nuance to a moment.

It's also unpleasant to watch and there isn't a good reason behind the film that makes up for that.

Good Time was way better.

Skye Reynolds posted...
The Great Mouse Detective

It was released at a time when Disney was trying to find its voice again in the pre-Renaissance / post-cute talking animals era. They could tell that society was shifting toward the mature and cynical, but weren't really positive what that meant for animation. As a result, the film features greater levels of violence than most Disney animated films, a Gremlins-inspired jump scare, and a sexy (if you're a furry) song and dance number.

As it's based off a British book series, there might be some licensing issues which prevent a re-release. (Or maybe Disney just doesn't want your kids watching a mouse perform a strip-tease.) But it's a legitimately good animated film boasting some memorable characters and enjoyable voice work -- especially from the deliciously wicked Vincent Price.

Great Mouse Detective is a good answer. Relative to it's quality it's barely talked about.

Because it doesn't mean appealing to independents/conservatives because Bernie/Yang/Tulsi do that best and they aren't called moderate.

I think it's "don't want much change" = moderate. And then it is juxtaposed against progressive but also juxtaposed against liberal so idk.

Based on how low my expectations were due to Discovery I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm watching very skeptically, I'm curious to see what Rich and Mike say, but IMO it's not trash yet, and it actually cares about canon.

STD is not Star Trek, Picard could still end up being consistent with Trek (even though it won't ever probably be week to week missions).

I wonder how many people would be leaping to this news anchor's defense if it was a man? Not nearly as many I bet. Imagine if Trump had slurred "Knicks" and "Lakers" together. I bet literally no one would hear "Nakers" then.

I can only hear "Nakers" if I slow it down. I don't understand why she stutters after saying it or starts talking like 3x faster after. Most people when making an honest mistake in public speaking don't react like that. They either ignore it or calmly correct themselves.

I also don't get why people think there's just no way she could have said it accidentally. Obviously no one that's been a news anchor their entire lives is waiting for the perfect opportunity to shout the n-word on live tv. Maybe she uses it casually in her down time, is a bit prejudiced, and her mind fucked her over. I forget what it's called but a lot of people have invasive/inappropriate thoughts that they recognize as wrong and keep from coming out. Maybe she was thinking something she shouldn't have been and it slipped out. She sure seemed to know right away that what she said wouldn't sound like "Nakers" to those watching at home.

She knew it sounded bad, but I think most people's point is that we shouldn't ascribe a bad motive or character to the person because of that.

A person's accidents don't reflect their character. A person's intent does.
